Why This Must Be Read: This is a bleak, harsh reminder of the regular atrocities that Goa'uld leave behind them... but it's also a poignant, courageous glimpse of the team doing their absolute best to defend innocents off-world. Add Jack's typical rapport with kids and Daniel's meandering thought processes for a short and well-written fic.

Really, Daniel wondered that they hadn't run across more orphans in the galaxy.

Why This Must Be Read: This is a fascinating glimpse at life for a civilian scientist at the SGC, complete with tragedy and powerful, realistic reactions to the trauma of going through the Gate. I am a sucker for good non-linear narrative, and the 2nd person POV is an intriguing twist. Complete with occasional cameos from familiar faces, this fic will make you care about the characters you meet.

Yes, I recced this one already, reread it on my Kindle, forgot I'd done so, and recced again without checking first. That's how much I liked it.

Link: Don't Ask

Why This Must Be Read: One of my favorite authors is rearchiving her fic on AO3, which makes a great excuse for me to reread her work and discover the odd gem or two that I haven't recced yet!

I love good outsider perspective, and I love all the little, unknown yet crucial cogs that go into making the SGC tick. So Redbyrd's stolid janitor, cleaning up all the inevitable messes that smash up the Gateroom and every other level in Cheyenne Mountain, is a real keeper. You know what he doesn't know - and it will definitely leave you grinning.

Bill nodded knowingly. You couldn't work in this place without knowing that there was some seriously strange stuff going on. If you wanted to stay, you signed everything they gave you and kept your trap shut, no matter how weird it got. And Bill did want to stay- for cleaning up weird messes and taking special training for chemicals and biohazards and god-knows-what, you got a salary that was pretty much unheard of for what was basically janitorial work. All you had to do was ignore the occasionally oddly dressed people you saw and never ask questions.

Sent to Atlantis to consult on survival methods, Indigo Matheson is surprised to be placed in charge of the entire expedition for a few months while senior staff is away on Earth. When Sergeant Bates’s paranoia spikes yet again, how will Indigo manage that crisis along with every other crisis in the galaxy?

Why This Must Be Read:

Disclosure: I made the donation through Fandom Trumps Hate for this fic. I had rec'd a fic by pipisafoat here before and was stoked to see an offering for a fic at FTH. I won the auction and this is that fic!

It's a wonderful piece set on Atlantis with a bunch of original characters. Indy is put in charge of Atlantis at the point where Weir, Sheppard, McKay and Beckett go back to Earth for a debriefing after "The Seige"... so it's a missing scene sort of thing.

Indy uses they pronouns and works (mostly) from a wheelchair. They and Weir already know each other, so Lizzie (as they call her) is comfortable leaving them in charge. While she's gone, Bates tries to mutiny and they find a Wraith on the city... all of which Indy has more-or-less prepared for.

Because there's no pairings or popular characters, this fic will be easily overlooked. I'm hoping by rec'ing it here, it will get more love!

Why This Must Be Read:

Author's Summary: SG-1 finds an unwelcome surprise on an alien planet

This could have been an episode of SG-1. Denise claims this was her first fan fic, so there's a couple of teeny burbles, but in the end, it's an interesting story. The "A" implies it was written for SG_FigNewton's Soup challenges.

This is typical "mission gone awry" -- on what looks like a boring mission to search for Kheb, bad things happen. Sam gets hurt, Jack is forced to shoot Teal'c (it makes sense at the time) and they lose their GDO. There's a couple of moments of major worry, but I will spoil this enough to tell you that there's a good ending.

It's a satisfying story... long enough to be interesting, but not too long that you have to slog through anything.

Why This Must Be Read: This is a series, with the main initial fic told from several POVs (Lorne, Elizabeth, Caldwell and Sheppard), then a companion fic from Rodney's POV, and lastly a brief coda from Sheppard's POV as he battles nightmares in the infirmary. The series is about a disastrous mission where Sheppard and several Marines are ambushed and captured by the Genii, after which Atlantis undertakes a rescue mission. There's a ton of plot and drama, focus on the harsh decisions leaders sometimes have to make in terrible situations, and on the values and heroism of the Marines. It's filled with excellent characterization, and, as expected in[personal profile] domarzione's work, features the usual cast of OCs - mostly marines, and Dr. Safir. As with all of the author's stories, there are bitingly realistic depictions of how the military functions - from strategy and tactics to internal politics and bureaucracy. The Jenny Code was reccd 13 years ago but the old link's expired and it deserves another mention. It's a tough read in places, incredibly well-written and very gripping.

Why This Must Be Read: I think this is a shiny new author, and definitely one worth encouraging! Here is a superb OC in the immediacy of second-person POV: a civilian going through Stargate, with all the trauma and determination and courage you can imagine.

As I commented, I am now going to mentally insert Callie into every background scene in the SGC, because this short fic brings her vividly to life.

The base psychologist asks if you still want to work on a gate team, to work with Evans and Takeda, or if you’d prefer to stay earthside.

“Yes,” you say, voice hoarse, “I want.” You don’t know why you agree, don't even know if you really do want to, but it's as if you can’t do anything else. You wonder if this is how Sergent Takeda feels when he talks about the gate, about his time in Atlantis, about his ten years at the SGC. As if there’s no way he can leave it behind for good, as much a part of him as his hands or feet.

You see this rarely in the show itself, though it comes up a couple of times. Here it is fleshed out more. If you enjoy an emotional story like I do, then this one is worth the read.
