Why This Must Be Read: Here's some oldskool fic to brighten your day!

In the wake of One False Step, various members of the SG-1 reach out to one another to make amends after their various dustups while under the influence of off-key singing plants. (That's an accurate description of the episode, but it sounds like the crackiest summary of the crackiest fanfic ever, doesn't it?) It's deft, wry, and perfectly in character - and a very satisfying coda to the episode.

The slow and steady beat of their understanding wove its way across the phone line, un-vocalized but not unheard, like the deep and vital tones of an alien world.

Jack wonders how long it will take them to know each other’s stories by heart.

His new brain corrects another stumble. He hasn’t got a heart.

Sha're. Amaunet. Dreams and the blurring of lines. Bleakly good.

In their dreams, Amaunet conjured feasts of strange fruits and bodies on the ground nearby. Sha’re supplemented the table with fresh breads and wrapped chocolate. She sat at one end of the conjured table dressed how she would have in Abydos, and across from her was her double, eyes glowing, and dressed in the garb of a system lord.

Why This Must Be Read: Lovely Sam POV that is quite literally the sweetness of team bonding via baked goods, with Daniel playing host. You've heard of the language of flowers? Daniel speaks cookies, cake, and pie, too!

Teamy goodness, a light dose of angst, and a slight warning for probable cravings by the time you reach the satisfactory ending. :)

Jack liked cake, so after each time he and Daniel went at it, after whatever tiff they had ran its course, Daniel would show up with four slices of red velvet or tres leches or plain old chocolate cake, and Jack would give him a twitchy smile, and Daniel would reciprocate with a twitchy smile of his own, and Sam would relax for the first time that week, catching Teal’c’s eye. They ended up eating a lot of cake.

Why This Must Be Read: Here is a lovely Janet and George introspective, as they grapple with the need to hold down the fort when they'd rather be doing something. It's quiet and gentle, with that steely resolve underneath, and it fits them both perfectly.

General Hammond smiled at her. It was one of those sad little smiles he saved for late at night when the losses were too much to bear. He didn't smile like that often. She smiled back, a wry almost-grin that she saved for the morning after the final sutures had been put in place, the infirmary was scrubbed clean, and she'd had enough coffee to get a start on feeling human again.

Why This Must Be Read: This is a fascinating glimpse at life for a civilian scientist at the SGC, complete with tragedy and powerful, realistic reactions to the trauma of going through the Gate. Why This Must Be Read: Five times Daniel thinks death would be kinder...

Short but not sweet, fully canonical, and very Daniel indeed.

Every time he gets close to another human being, he can't help but feel the echoes of an eight year old's pain and denial, listening in incomprehension as some stranger or other tried to tell him that his parents had "gone away" without him.

They were only the first in a long line of people to leave him, but he's never quite managed to forgive them for it.

Why This Must Be Read: I disliked Unending for many, many reasons. This wonderful story is an excellent episode fix for one of the most egregious flaws: the blink-and-you-miss-it reaction to the loss of an entire race.

When news of the Asgard's fate reaches Atlantis, Caldwell reaches out to Hermiod. What follows is a tribute to the Asgard, a nod to Cimmeria, the meaning of friendship and camaraderie, and a much more satisfying sendoff than anything in the show.

Thor and the Asgard deserved better, and this lovely fic gives it to them!

Why This Must Be Read: I think this is a shiny new author, and definitely one worth encouraging! Here is a superb OC in the immediacy of second-person POV: a civilian going through Stargate, with all the trauma and determination and courage you can imagine.

As I commented, I am now going to mentally insert Callie into every background scene in the SGC, because this short fic brings her vividly to life.

The base psychologist asks if you still want to work on a gate team, to work with Evans and Takeda, or if you’d prefer to stay earthside.

“Yes,” you say, voice hoarse, “I want.” You don’t know why you agree, don't even know if you really do want to, but it's as if you can’t do anything else. You wonder if this is how Sergent Takeda feels when he talks about the gate, about his time in Atlantis, about his ten years at the SGC. As if there’s no way he can leave it behind for good, as much a part of him as his hands or feet.

Take that quote from Homecoming and give it the classic Paian treatment for sharp and shrewd amnesiac!Daniel, using all his skills as an archaeologist to explore the mystery that is Dr. Daniel Jackson... and his friendship with Jack O'Neill.

Lovely stuff!

So he studied Daniel Jackson's professional history the way his curriculum vitae informed him he had studied the history and languages of this planet. He made private, independent assessments of the people around him, uncontaminated by what others might have told him about them or about his past interactions with them. He learned what he could learn by reading. What the four members of SG-1 didn't seem to realize, despite knowing full well that one of Doctor Jackson's specialties was anthropology, was that he was nearly as good at reading people as he was at reading text.
