Why This Must Be Read: Written in 2005 (so well before The Return) for the prompt "separated for years, but something brings them together", this can be read as an AU, or as futurefic (it would have been that at the time it was written, predicting The Return), or set post canon. It's tagged as Gen, but to me it feels like a McShep story, pre-slash. They're all back on Earth and have been for five years, and every year John writes to his closest friends from the expedition, to get them back together for Christmas. Lorne he sees more regularly, as he lives close by. But every year they all get together again... except for Rodney. This year, however, is different. It's a little sad, until it isn't, and I love it.

Why This Must Be Read: This is set in Vegas'verse and it goes AU near the end of the episode, as in this fic John doesn't manage to get the Wraith killed in time and its signal gets through. So the Wraith fleet is coming for Earth and John's recovering after almost dying, at Nancy's, as she's still his listed next of kin. Beautifully written and with great characterisation for Nancy and John, this is kind of bleak, yes, as the apocalypse looms, but at the end there's some hope, and some redemption.

Why This Must Be Read: I love this story so much. Sholio hits it out of the park with this story where Sheppard considers his first impression of McKay then follows them through canon and the amazing friendship they are building together. It's sweet and fun. I've probably read it several times because of the humor mixed with just the perfect view of them. Sholio really understands John and Rodney and gets their witty banter down perfectly. I can't recommend it enough.

And! There's a wonderful podfic by Rheanna for it as well which I've listened to at least twice. One of my favorites.

Why This Must Be Read: Kodiak Bear Country is one of my favorite authors and she always right a spot on John Sheppard. In this story, she has John reflecting on his past and his choices as he and Rodney wait for rescue. It's his 40th birthday. It's written before we learned about John's dad and other stuff in canon, but it's not far off from what canon decided. I love this John so worried about Rodney while thinking about what brought him to this point. It's sweet, reflective, and a quick read.

Unfortunately, Kodiak Bear Country has all her stuff on LJ and fanfiction.net and not on AO3, but I still think it's really worth the read anyway.

This really is for the Teen Wolf fans who also adore Stargate SG-1. This is a Stiles-centric fic from start to end but Stiles is a Guide who ends up with Clone Jack O'Neill as his Sentinel. It's a Stiles who doesn't want to be a Guide. And Clone Jack still remembers being bonded to Daniel. That's as messy as it sounds.

Add in rogue NID agents kidnapping Guides, a confused Sheriff who is not happy with the apparent age of his son's Sentinel, werewolves, NDAs up the wazoo, and a frustrated Blair who is challenged every step of the way by Stiles who asks 'why' about everything and you have a fascinating fic that brings some of our favorite people into one place.

Why This Must Be Read: This will be well known, but it's never been reccd here, so I need to correct that! It's a fusion with the world of the game "The Long Dark" in which an unknown astronomical event acts like an EMP and fries all electronics. John, a military pilot, is ferrying civilian scientist McKay who he's never met before across the far north of Canada to a secret base when their helicopter goes down. That starts their adventure on an isolated island in the very far north at the limits of survivability, post-apocalypse. The story's full of plot and action, and romance, and as LogicGunn says, despite some traumatic sections it's a lot fluffier than the tags might suggest. It's a marvellous story, gripping and often heartwarming and with lots of interesting survival details. In the end, despite the apocalypse, John and Rodney still have each other.

Why This Must Be Read: This is truly an exceptional, fantastic fic—I promise, once you start, you won’t be able to stop. It’s an amazing journey through so many emotions, and it fits their characters perfectly. Objectlesson makes you laugh at the beginning and leaves you gasping for air at the end because of the intense feelings and the hot, dirty sex—in the best possible ways.
There are so many wonderful little moments in this story. Rodney’s awkward, scientific, and curious Rodney-logic, and his step-by-step realization of his own feelings — while finally uncovering John’s deepest desires — are an incredible rollercoaster of obliviousness, humor, sweetness, raw emotion, and mind-blowing sex. They’re unstoppable, completely and deeply in love! It’s one of those stories everyone should read and reread. Go for it!

Why This Must Be Read: I've reccd this before as it's very clever and well-written. The story hinges on the the multiverse theory of time travel being correct - that you can travel through time into the past but a new timeline branches off as soon as you do, so you can never get back to your original timeline. This has massive implications for both Moebius in Stargate SG1, and for the SGA series. Mad_Maudlin explores two of these in parts 1 & 0 of the fic. The characterisations are great, and even though the scenarios are apocalyptic, there's humour as well. The time travel aspect is, as usual, headache-inducing, so I made a diagram to explain it (if I've understood it right).

Note that the diagram is VERY SPOILERY so I suggest reading the fic before looking at it! (click arrow to left)

SG1 in canon use time-travel jumper to go back 5000 yrs to Ancient Egypt and leave tape & info in a tomb. A new timeline splits off. In the new timeline: After 'The Siege', McKay & Sheppard are back at the SGC and Rodney tells Sam & Daniel they misunderstood what happened. They feel some disquiet about what might have happened in the original timeline. In the original timeline, possibility#1: SG1 do hide the tape but they never return (as different timeline). SGC does find the tape. There's no Atlantis expedition. SG1 are lost so don't save Earth from the Goa'uld invasion. Rodney still works for the SGC & desperately tries to get the Antarctic Chair working. John activates it but the Goa'uld fleet has mostly destroyed Earth's cities. In the original timeline possibility #2: There <em>is</em> an Atlantis expedition, but the Wraith destroy or take Atlantis as no ZPM returned with SG1 (lost in the past) so no rescue from Earth after 1 yr. Daedalus finds them after 2 yrs. John's lost a leg, Weir's dead, they live with the Athosians on an 'alpha site', having run from the Wraith from planet to planet. Rodney's not doing well. Plus, in this timeline/alternate universe, he's also allergic to peanuts.

Why This Must Be Read: This is a canon-divergent AU in which survivors of the expedition are forced to flee to a desolate alpha site when the Wraith take Atlantis and occupy it, leaving many expedition members behind, captured, and Sheppard lost. It's a powerful fic, with the main POVs being Elizabeth's as she desperately tries to hold the survivors together in the face of disaster while grappling with impossible life and death decisions, and Rodney's, as he mourns Sheppard in stunned rage, then undertakes a desperate Hail Mary ploy on which the fate of the expedition, Earth, and the Milky Way galaxy depend. The characterizations and writing are wonderful, from Elizabeth's exhausted determination to Kate and Radek's strength and humor, to Rodney's complex, fracturing psyche as the effects of his plan take hold. It's a tough read in places, but hang in there for the ending. Very much recommended.

Rodney and John have a very unfortunate off-world incident that leaves them technically dead—but very much still present, talking, and driving the entire expedition up the walls. Needless to say, being dead can't shut Rodney McKay up, especially with John Sheppard right there to argue with him. The banter is hilarious, everyone is adorably in character, and yes—of course, they all end up safe, sound, and happily alive in the end.
Black humor, great bickering, and a comforting happy ending — what more could you want? Enjoy!

Why This Must Be Read: This is a classic and it hasn't been reccd here for 14 years, so time for a signalboost. It's an AU set post-series, with Atlantis moored off San Francisco and Rodney lured away on vacation with Jennifer, until he realises something's hinky in the email replies he's getting from John. I love this fic as it features a highly competent (albeit terrified) Rodney who's been just paranoid enough to have in place the resources he needs to rescue John (and the Pegasus galaxy) from a high-level conspiracy. There's a really great OMC and a ton of UST that inevitably ends up with John and Rodney together. It's gripping, with great characterisation and lots of action, adventure, and plot - an excellent read!

Why This Must Be Read: It’s a beautifully written, sensitive story by Mas_pebbles_sharp, who gorgeously highlights every single one of Rodney’s assets—pun intended—his perfect imperfections, with each member of the team having their own unique take on him.
And Rodney’s overall obliviousness to the effect he has on others, to the emotions he stirs up, and the way he reacts once he realizes all the attention he’s getting—it’s so endearing and sweet, and honestly? Hot as hell.
It’s an amazing McShep getting-together fic set in the middle of the most gorgeous polyamorous OT4 you could ever imagine. The four of them being so at ease, so in sync, and just happy together will fill your heart to the brim.

It features a badass Rodney saving John on a mission-gone-wrong, pushing himself beyond what he'd thought possible to carry John, wounded, back to the stargate. The rest of the story is about rescuing Ronon and Teyla, and the aftermath of the mission when John regains consciousness and gradually pieces together how Rodney feels about him. Action, then feelings and romance, and it's an enjoyable read.

Why This Must Be Read: in this "mission gone wrong" the team, plus a Marine, Radek, and some archaeologists, end up stranded on top of a partly-submerged old city, the Gate (and the jumper) now underwater after a mudslide and flood. It was written for an SGA flashfic challenge "Strange New Worlds and Alien Geography", and while at first the worst they seem to be facing is dampness and discomfort, the world proves to have wildlife that makes things interesting. This is lots of fun, with amusing grumpy banter, John in peril, and a great alien encounter.

Daniel brings Jack with him to a cultural theater event at his old university attended by some of his former colleagues. When one of Daniel’s professors assumes that he and Jack are an item, Jack plays into it to amuse himself and to get under Daniel’s skin. Which he does, in more ways than one.
