Why This Must Be Read: Here is a lovely Janet and George introspective, as they grapple with the need to hold down the fort when they'd rather be doing something. It's quiet and gentle, with that steely resolve underneath, and it fits them both perfectly.

General Hammond smiled at her. It was one of those sad little smiles he saved for late at night when the losses were too much to bear. He didn't smile like that often. She smiled back, a wry almost-grin that she saved for the morning after the final sutures had been put in place, the infirmary was scrubbed clean, and she'd had enough coffee to get a start on feeling human again.

Why This Must Be Read: This short, feel-good fic is an exercise in wishful thinking: wouldn't it have been nice if TPTB had taken advantage of Jack's fish-filled pond at the end of S8 to change a few more things?

Short, sweet, and to the point, this fic takes SG-1 home from their trip to Jack's cabin to discover that their journey to the past has had a few more repercussions than they originally thought. Put this one in the "if only!" file, and take it out to reread whenever you're particularly missing one spit-fire, Napoleonic Little Doc and one snarky, wry and intelligent Tok'ra.

Why This Must Be Read: Here is oldskool!Little Doc at her finest, offering comfort when Daniel needs it most. Very short (like Janet herself, heh), but also very poignant and very right.

It's normal to forget some things -- how many times you've been on an airplane, how many fish you're supposed to have in the fishtank, how old General Hammond's granddaughter will turn next weekend.

But Daniel's lying in the infirmary, heart monitor beeping reassuringly, feet still tingling from the long minutes of stalled blood flow earlier that day, and he can't remember how many times he has died.

Why This Must Be Read: I'm not sure I even know a female version of John Watson existed (hey, medical doctor, name of show... it's a pretty safe assumption), but no knowledge of Elementary is required to enjoy this epistolary exchange between Janet, Joan, Cassie and George. There are multiple time jumps to cover nearly a decade of canon, but it's a delightful exploration of the friendships that surely exist outside the SGC.

I assume that if you are familiar with Joan Watson, you'll enjoy this ever more than I did... but either way, it's definitely a keeper!

I would be delighted to be Cassie’s weird but absurdly trustworthy Aunt Joan, keeper of secrets, buyer of lunches, sender of mildly inappropriate Christmas gifts, purveyor of worldly wisdom, et cetera. I hereby swear that I am neither a Bond villain nor a Bond girl, and that the worst thing your bosses are likely to find in my personal history is the business with the cadaver, the trombone, and the three watermelons, which I assume is already in their files from your background check.

Why This Must Be Read: First published back in 2000, this is one of the first friendship / family fics I found, way back then, to do with Cassandra ... and it's the only one I'd found that addressed the question of just what to do with an alien child who has lost her entire family, suffered trauma, and been stranded on a strange world. All of SG-1 plus Janet and Hammond are represented, each striving to find the best solution. Most of all, I love that this story explores that question not only from the point of view of the adults, but also lets us hear - in a poignant, touching scene - from Cassandra herself. This is a truly lovely story.

Why This Must Be Read: This is a classic SG1 novel-length story, reccd here nine years ago so this is a reminder, and to add the Wayback link. It goes AU from canon after Jack gets snaked with a Tok'ra in 'the Abyss'. The story is partly plotty action/adventure, and partly Jack and the symbiote grappling with a traumatic, messed-up blending. At the fic's start Jack has repressed what's happened and we see his confusion. It's an amazingly well-written story in tight third person POV. I re-read it every few years - highly recommended.

Why This Must Be Read: Way back in the old days, Scribe was well known for her inventive, meaty, well plotted adventure stories. While most of her plots involve something to do with Daniel, everyone else is usually front and centre as well, with a strong emphasis on team friendship woven into the latest predicament SG-1 finds itself in ...and this story is no exception. Written not long after the episode first aired, this is (imo) one of the very best 'oops, something's not quite right' tags written for Fire & Water. It's original, dramatic, and even considering the serious situation the team faces, it's just plain fun to read.

Author's Summary:

The Zoroastrian religion has never been quite up to Daniel's standards of worthy of study. That's about to change! As usual, our archaeologist gets himself into a situation with dire consequences. The dire aspect is the trauma our dear colonel has to go through as a result of Daniel's tendency to immerse himself in any culture the team comes even close to tripping over. The consequences on other missions have been dangerous and deadly. This time the consequences have feathers. And sex. Sex and feathers. Yep.

Why This Must Be Read:

Daniel gets wings while in a temple on what should have been a routine mission (you'll figure that out pretty quickly, and it's tagged 'wingfic,' so it's not a spoiler). Jack gets all protective of his archeologist.

But being Daniel, he has to explore having wings, how it might have happened and how they work. All to Jack's consternation and frustration.

While this is a 'team' fic, it really is about Jack and Daniel, and what goes on in Jack and Daniel's relationship as Daniel immerses himself in his research.

Oh, and sex and feathers! That alone makes the fic worthwhile!

Nothing says ‘Welcome back’ and ‘Glad you’re not a treasonous thief’ like the return of his tags, a couple of sets of BDUs, and the contents of his locker.

Why This Must Be Read:

This is a perfect coda to Shades of Grey where SG-1 comes back together after Jack's 'treason' and mission to search out the group stealing alien artifacts.

The story is at its best as Daniel dissects what happened and why Jack went along with the scheme in the first place.

A short, powerful piece.

Why This Must Be Read:

Out of all stargate fanfiction I have personally read, this story feels a smidge different. The writer adds elements of fantasy into a sci-fi story. Considering the different nature of fantasy, this cannot be an easy thing to do. But the writer manages it well here. Using those elements, the writer explores the concepts of human connection, friendship, and family. It made me think, as well filled me with warm fuzzies when I finished it. That is a sign of a good story to me.

Why This Must Be Read: We all wanted to see what happened after Osiris took over Sarah Gardner, threw Janet and Sam around, and tortured and threatened Daniel. Daniel has lost another loved-one to the Goa'uld and was attacked with the ribbon device. There is physical and emotional fallout. And Jack and Teal'c return to the SGC to find out their teammates have been in danger while they've been out fishing. This fic is one reason I love missing scenes and tags - because it's emotionally satisfying.

Snippet: Jack was already across the room squatting down next to Daniel's bed, with Teal'c close behind. Jack carefully brushed back Daniel's hair and peered closely at the ugly red burn on his forehead. "Is he okay? Looks like a ribbon device."

"Yeah, Osiris didn't much like him not telling where Isis is. I think he'll be okay, he's already better than he was yesterday. We just all need to get home," Janet said with exhaustion creeping into her voice.

"That's what we're here for," Jack stood up and turned toward the others, "Teal'c and I are here to serve. How do we go about getting this show on the road? Should we wake Daniel up?"

"You already did." Daniel struggled to raise himself up, got about a third of the way up and was in danger of flopping back. Teal'c reached down and wrapped a big hand around Daniel's upper arm to pull him gently to a sitting position. "Thanks Teal'c".

Why This Must Be Read: Written by a fellow Aussie, this fic explores the alternate universe proposed in the season 1 episode 'There But for the Grace of God.' There's a strong focus on the developing romantic relationship between Jack and Sam, but it also touches on the unusual pairing of Janet and Kawalsky. The fic flirts with a few other first season episodes including 'Children of the Gods' and 'The Broca Divide.' I hate to play favourites, but this fic stands out for me - I've read it two or three times. I think the story and characters are well developed and executed. Without spoiling the ending for those who haven't read it, there's two choices depending on your personal preferences. If you're a Jack/Sam shipper (or just a connoisseur of good fanfiction), this one will hit the right buttons - just keep a box of tissues handy, because it's heavy on the angst! The author also weaves in a few new characters, including the loveable Leslie, who fit perfectly into the universe.

In a way, 'Meet you on the Other Side' has elements of the 'Pride and Prejudice' about it (particularly in the first few chapters), but I choose to view the "borrowing" of familiar themes endearing - and I hope you do too! Happy reading!

Yet I read this long, satisfying story at a gulp, loving that this was canon and yet gave us such a fascinating alternate perspective!

I've always firmly believed that if anyone is working at the SGC, they are competent and the best of the best. Felger is the exception that proves the rule. So when Marzipan portrays Dr. Mackenzie, even in the midst of Legacy, as an intelligent, competent doctor...

Here is Mackenzie: professional, dedicated, genuinely doing his best. And here is Jack and Teal'c and Sam, driven to somehow cure Daniel through sheer mental effort. And here is Daniel: trapped in hallucinations, just aware enough to know his mind is disintegrating.

Everyone is wonderful here. Everyone. Settle down and read this one with enjoyment.
