Why This Must Be Read: This is a fascinating glimpse at life for a civilian scientist at the SGC, complete with tragedy and powerful, realistic reactions to the trauma of going through the Gate. I am a sucker for good non-linear narrative, and the 2nd person POV is an intriguing twist. Complete with occasional cameos from familiar faces, this fic will make you care about the characters you meet.

Yes, I recced this one already, reread it on my Kindle, forgot I'd done so, and recced again without checking first. That's how much I liked it.

The first time you see the event horizon it's blue, beautiful, and it takes your breath away. Now, in your dreams, the surface is bloodstained, bright red.

Our newly-minted General-Jack has been in charge a few weeks, and Daniel's noticing some attitude and behaviour changes around the place ... one change pointed out by Sam and Teal'c, specifically in Jack's behavior, though, proves to be quite the eye-opener not only to Daniel but also to Jack himself. Written with great wit, this is an engaging, funny, and reaffirming friendship story.

Why This Must Be Read: First published back in 2000, this is one of the first friendship / family fics I found, way back then, to do with Cassandra ... and it's the only one I'd found that addressed the question of just what to do with an alien child who has lost her entire family, suffered trauma, and been stranded on a strange world. All of SG-1 plus Janet and Hammond are represented, each striving to find the best solution. Most of all, I love that this story explores that question not only from the point of view of the adults, but also lets us hear - in a poignant, touching scene - from Cassandra herself. This is a truly lovely story.

Why This Must Be Read: Way back in the old days, Scribe was well known for her inventive, meaty, well plotted adventure stories. While most of her plots involve something to do with Daniel, everyone else is usually front and centre as well, with a strong emphasis on team friendship woven into the latest predicament SG-1 finds itself in ...and this story is no exception. Written not long after the episode first aired, this is (imo) one of the very best 'oops, something's not quite right' tags written for Fire & Water. It's original, dramatic, and even considering the serious situation the team faces, it's just plain fun to read.

Why This Must Be Read: On the surface, this is an SG-1 meet and greet story in which Daniel develops an interest in a particular facet of the offworld culture the team is introduced to ... but, for me, it's much more than that. Set against the backdrop and context of an offworld culture and strong Jack and Daniel friendship, this is a story about respect, and about the importance of all of our life 'stories', of our collective and individual history. And no matter how many times I re-read it, it never fails to touch my heart.

Why This Must Be Read: I think this is a shiny new author, and definitely one worth encouraging! Here is a superb OC in the immediacy of second-person POV: a civilian going through Stargate, with all the trauma and determination and courage you can imagine.

As I commented, I am now going to mentally insert Callie into every background scene in the SGC, because this short fic brings her vividly to life.

The base psychologist asks if you still want to work on a gate team, to work with Evans and Takeda, or if you’d prefer to stay earthside.

“Yes,” you say, voice hoarse, “I want.” You don’t know why you agree, don't even know if you really do want to, but it's as if you can’t do anything else. You wonder if this is how Sergent Takeda feels when he talks about the gate, about his time in Atlantis, about his ten years at the SGC. As if there’s no way he can leave it behind for good, as much a part of him as his hands or feet.

Why This Must Be Read: A last rec to slip in before May ends in most places. I love this story of a mission gone wrong where the team gets caught up in local politics stirred up by a conniving king. There's some nice slow-developing intimacy between John and Rodney, and lots of plot and drama as they try to escape from the king and then angry mobs. Also, I really love the chicken! An excellent read.

Why This Must Be Read: A last couple of recs to slip in before the end of May. The drama is quieter in this fic which is about a benign version of "The Long Goodbye" where two Ancients temporarily occupy John and Rodney - but lovers, not fighters. The unusual title refers to a philosopher who theorized about the mind. Anyway, the story's about love and loss and forward planning, and it's touching and ultimately hopeful for John and Rodney. A lovely read. As it's an older fic italics are shown by asterisks, and some names precede the spelling that later became canon.

Why This Must Be Read: An AU fusion with the movie of the same name, featuring drama from a natural disaster. John (Director of the Office of Emergency Management) and Rodney (a geophysicist) are caught up in an earthquake that causes an eruption of lava in downtown Los Angeles. There's action and adventure, lots of Shrift's excellently snarky dialogue, and some romance in the mix. An excellent and dramatic read!

Why This Must Be Read: This isn't high drama, but it's a wonderful slice of life as we follow a post-abdominal-surgery John after the rescue of Teyla and her baby from Michael, in a hiatus when Carter's been recalled to Earth and John has to step up as leader of the expedition. The dramas are the day to day alarms and crises of the Atlantis base, with John struggling to cope despite really needing another few days in bed. Lorne's in much the same boat, but luckily John has his team to rally around and support him. Kristen puts in some great, realistic details about the actual running of the military aspect of the base, and it's an excellent read.

Why This Must Be Read:

Following the theme of team, I’m switching focus on this one. It is more like the first one I recced, in that the team has difficulties to overcome. While many fanfic's goes there, this one is noteworthy in the fact that it is Sam, not Jack who struggles with Daniel’s point of view. You see this rarely in the show itself, though it comes up a couple of times. Here it is fleshed out more. If you enjoy an emotional story like I do, then this one is worth the read.

Why This Must Be Read:

Out of all authors of Stargate Fan Fic I have read, Marzipan’s stories have been the most effecting. No Stars to Wish On, is one of those. The writer has tagged this story as “team as family” and I think it fits well. But like any family, it is dysfunctional at times and you get a heaping helping dose of that here. I love those interactions, even the harder ones. If a story stays with me months later and effects my own writing in some small way, well I can’t think of higher praise than that.

Why This Must Be Read: Part of me thinks this reads so well to me because, like Sam in this story, I am an outsider to SGA trying to work it out. But most of me thinks this is simply a fantastic, gripping fic that both SGA and SG-1 fans can love!

This is early Sam-in-command-of-Atlantis, still dealing with she's-not-Elizabeth-Weir resentment from the Atlantis team. This is Sam, dealing with a mystery and bad guys with courage and brains and sheer determination. This is Sam and Teyla being awesome together and the team working flawlessly. Add some delightful SG-1 crossing over with superb characterization, and you've got a long, satsifying read that'll definitely leave you wanting more!

One final note: the author labels this as "S/J, but could be read with gen goggles." There was only a single line or two in the final paragraphs that required me to settle my gen goggles firmly on my nose to read as casual male/female friendship, but for Sam/Jack fans, consider that aspect a bonus.

Why This Must Be Read: It's an angsty piece, full of the boiling emotions inherent in Season 4 of SG-1. It's got the perfect trifecta of misunderstanding, accidental injury, and Jack and Daniel healing. It's a heart-wrenching blast from the past that reminds us of the strange changes in SG-1 that season and that, at the deepest level, these people, as different as they are, needed each other. Together, they made TEAM.
