There are still several hours left of this calendar year, and the stats for 2020 won't be posted until tomorrow. But after some modly discussion, we are happy to announce that we will be throwing open the comm in January for Open Reccer's Month!

For the first month of 2021, anyone will be allowed to post a rec here at

stargateficrec! No minimum number of recs and no commitment to a specific category will be required. If you've ever wondered about reccing but weren't quite sure you could do it, this is your chance to try it out!

Posts will be moderated to avoid bot spamming and allow for the correction of errors, but the mods are all in different time zones and there shouldn't be too long a delay. :)

It's time for our usual post to allow volunteers to sign up for next month, but first...

danceswithgary has worked quietly behind the scenes of

stargateficrec for as long as I can remember. When I was granted ownership of the comm in December 2013,

danceswithgary was already part of the admin team, working over the years on both tagging and memories. She has also been a regular reccer of SGA fic, thereby giving the comm the best of both worlds.

Now, after so many years of quiet and sold dedication to

stargateficrec,

danceswithgary has retired from active admin duties. Currently,

thenightsfall does all the memories and

annieb does all the tagging. I would like to publically thank my fellow admins for their hard work, and wish

danceswithgary all the best. You are all more than welcome to add your thanks in the comments, and I'll make sure

danceswithgary knows to take a look.

Now, on to the regular stuff!

This entry will be open to February volunteers through January 31st. Comment with the username you'll be using to rec and the category you want. Several weeks ago, in response to the latest upheaval at LJ, we imported this community as a backup archive. After seeing the responses on our long-running poll and extensive discussion among the mods, we have made the decision to move

stargateficrec fully to Dreamwidth.

The comm on LiveJournal will not disappear. All entries will remain; all memories will remain. It will not even go completely static, because we will be posting a round-up of links to the entries on the DW comm on a monthly basis. The main activity, however, will move here.

For the months of August and September, as part of the transition process, we will allow posting at both communities, both on LJ and DW. No reccer, of course, will be expected to post simultaneously; the mods will post an end-of-month entry on both comms with links to the recs that were made on the other platform.

The sign-up post for August will go up shortly. We have also slightly tweaked the reccing rules, and we think it will make things easier.

stargateficrec has a long, satisfying history, and we have no intention of seeing it dwindle away. We hope you will all continue to enjoy the recs from the Stargate fandom, whether you are reading, reccing, or being recced, both here and on LJ.

In the wake of the abrupt change in LJ's TOS last month and the concerns of many, the admins of

stargateficrec have been discussing our options.

We have created a backup archive of the community on Dreamwidth, but for now, that's all it is. It's a safety measure to ensure that no matter what happens to LJ in the future, 13 years' worth of Stargate fandom won't be lost.

stargateficrec's community members can be divided into two separate types: those that are active in the comm (and we thank you, reccers!), and those that passively enjoy seeing fic recs pop up in their flists. Any future decisions need to serve both kinds. There are, perhaps, a dozen active members, and we aware that some of those active members have chosen to leave LJ and move exclusively to DW; but there are also over 1,800 people who have

stargateficrec on their flists. We want to determine how we can best serve our community.

To that end, please take a minute to respond to the poll below. Knowing the reactions of as many comm readers as possible will give us a clearer idea of where to go from here.

medie are retiring from

stargateficrec and passing ownership to me. I join all of you in saluting them for their tireless work and devotion to the comm and I hope I can do their dedication justice. I definitely still intend to continue my reccing duties. :)

The comm has been much less active of late, as Stargate's status as closed canon naturally results in less activity. But there are still plenty of fans out there, and here's hoping we can continue to spread fandom joy by reccing our favorite stories and sharing the squee!

As there's only a month left in the calendar year, we'll continue with the status quo for now. I hope to continue to learn some more about the behind-the-scenes work (the volunteers are all self-sufficient and wonderful) before suggesting any changes or modifications. The volunteer post will go up shortly for December, and we'll take it from there.

Q.Who are the maintainers?

A. That would be the owner,

angelsgracie, with

medie as second-in-command.

kellifer_fic is the lead maintainer.

Q. How do I become a rec'cer?

A. The mods have tried to make it easy to rec your favorites. There's one signup post every month, a simple template (see below), and lists of stories that have already been recced that you can check. Note: We don't mind repeat recs if the recs are in different categories. We just don't want a story rec'ced more than once within the same category.

After you've signed up and the mods have granted you posting access:

1. Track down a link to your story,
2. Check the lists of stories already recc'ed in the comm's Memories (sorted by category),
3. Cut/paste the template into your post,
4. Fill in the blanks,
5. Fill in the LJ Subject with Title by Author (Rating),
6. No tagging required - the mods do that at the end of the month - so,
7. Post!

Q. The fic I want to rec is actually more than one category. What do I do?

A. You rec it in your assigned category only.

Here's an example:

I'm rec'cing Jack this month and I want to rec 'Finally Home.' Technically, that fic is Jack, Jack/Jonas, Jonas and Slash. Since I'm only rec'cing Jack, when I do my rec, Rec Category = Jack O'Neill

We don't mind repeat recs if the recs are in different categories. We just don't want a story rec'ced more than once within the same category.

Q. How do I know what's been rec'ced already?

A. All fics are put into the memories for the comm. They are sorted by category. If you're rec'cing Daniel Jackson, you'd go to Stargateficrec's Memories and then click on Daniel Jackson. There will be a list, by title and rating, of all the fics previously rec'ced in that category.

Q. Um... I want to post my recs and can't.

A. Only rec'cers for the month will be allowed posting access. Anyone can leave a comment in the community, but it's set up so that only rec'cers can post. When we post the monthly list of rec'cers to the comm, we will give everyone on that list access to post to the community. Make sure you're listed on the user info as a member. Only members can have posting access and if you are only listed in the 'Watched By:' category, you cannot be given access.

Q. Earlier you said that you,

angelsgracie and

medie were the owners/maintainers, but I see several other names on the list of maintainers. Can I contact them?

A. No. Their position is purely to maintain the actual recs. Anything to do with the members, admins, and questions will be handled by

angelsgracie or

medie. Any questions should be sent to us.

medie will run any questions by me, and I'll make decisions or whatever from there.

Q. I'm signed up to rec in a genre. Can I just rec Atlantis fics?

Honestly, we like to see a balance between SG-1 and Atlantis here. We are a firm believers that there's still an abundance of good fic for both shows out there. If you want to rec solely for SG-1 or Atlantis, we suggest you take an SG-1 or Atlantis character or pairing when you volunteer.

Q. Can I tag my own recs?

A. No. We have a wonderful group of volunteers (mentioned above) who tag all the entries and put them into memories. The comm is set up so that only those with maintainer privileges can tag. It's just the easiest way all around since we have a system of how we want the entries tagged.

Q. How is it decided what tags are added to the entries?

A. Tags are added according to three lines in the Template for rec'cing.

2. Rec Category
3. Pairing

Q. Can I use my recs to promote other communities?

A. For now, we're going to have to say 'no' to this one. It's not that we don't want to promote other communities. We have a list of affiliate comms on the userinfo page. If you would like to become an affiliate, just email me at mrsgeneraloneill @ hotmail . com. I'll add the comm to the userinfo page, and the other comm will add stargateficrec to their userinfo.

We're saying 'no' because we want the focus to be on the fic that's being rec'ced and the author who wrote it. We don't want recs to end up as advertisements for anything other than the fic itself.

Q. Can I rec a WIP?

A. Initially, we would have answered a flat out 'no' to this question. However, there are a lot of good WIP's out there. So 'yes' you may rec a WIP, however you MUST put WIP in the Warnings of the entry. If that's not there, the rec will be removed. People don't like going in to read a fic, thinking it's finished, only to find it isn't. So as long as you put in the Warnings that it is a WIP, we should be good.

Q. What about RP fic?

A. Gonna have to say 'no' to this one. It's a touchy subject matter that can be very controversial and we strive for this comm to be as free from conflict as possible. Therefore, no fic that contains real people... Characters only.

Q. What if I have posting access already and I'm rec'cing a different category for the next month?

A. Please wait until

kellifer_fic switches posting access to start your new category. This makes the beginning of the month unilateral for everyone. It keeps it fair all the way around. Until she switches access, the rec'cer from the previous month may still want to put up a rec. This way, no toes are stepped upon.

Q. What about disciplinary policy? How are flamers handled?

A. This one is another cut and dry response. If someone flames a rec'cer, the comment will be deleted. Flames are NOT tolerated. If someone does it on a repeated basis, then he/she will be banned. This comm is a haven for fans of Stargate fanfiction. We are biased toward no one. We represent as wide a variety of fandom as we possibly can. Everyone should feel safe to express themselves. It's the part of this comm that makes us most proud.

As I have said, 2012 is going to see big changes for the comm. The fandom for Stargate is changing because nothing new is being fed to viewers and writers, so creative energies start to lag. It's sad, but a natural process when new episodes are no more. We're not giving up on the comm, not by a long shot. But we also realize that getting in new rec'cers, even with over 1000 people in the comm, is a bit unrealistic. People can call it how they want, but it isn't HOW we have the comm set up. It's worked for years. We've brought in new rec'cers for years with our set up. It works. It works for numerous other fic rec communities. What we're up against now is the fact that we have no NEW input from producers and show execs... no new episodes of Stargate to feed fanfic writers. So the fandom will start to shrink.

So here is what we're going to do.

We're giving

sg_fignewton a promotion. Since she has been the IT rec'cer for so long, we're making her a permanent rec'cer. She'll rec in two or three categories, whatever she wants, a month. Her only 'restrictions', if you want to call them that, is that she'll use the categories we've already set out within the community. So each month, she'll surprise us with her categories of choice and give us her recommendations. She's been a loyal and dependable rec'cer for years, and this is the best way I can think of to reward her for her years of devotion to the community.

As for other rec'cers...

medie will put up a post in the comm every month. You want to rec, you go to that post and put your name there. You tell her what you want to rec. First come, first served. Your choice has to be within the categories already set out within the community. We can't make it any easier than this. Mostly, my reasoning is making this easier on

medie. She spends a considerable amount of her time working for this comm and it bears little fruit and even less gratitude. She works very hard for the comm, and I'm not sure that people understand exactly where this comm would be without her. So I'm doing this to make it a bit easier on her.

medie will post at the end of the month for volunteers for rec'cers. You will volunteer on THAT POST with the category you want to rec. FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED.

Changes take affect with the March sign up for rec'cers. If you have already signed up for a category for March, just wait for the March post and sign up there.

medie will NOT be checking the March requests.
