Why This Must Be Read: This one never made it to AO3 from LJ, so it may be a bit overlooked. It's a fun story, with excellent oblivious!Rodney and a very patient John. I also like the natural way Rodney's (largely imaginary) relationship with Jennifer Keller ends, without any Keller-bashing. It's set at the time in canon when Rodney and Ronon were competing for Jennifer, and if the mention of Tagan confuses you, in canon that's Torren. Shortish and sweet and hot.

Why This Must Be Read:

I love when the Atlantis crew are stranded in Pegasus and, in spite of that, manage to flourish and declare independence from Earth.

The author has a smart John Sheppard here, who knows how to get things done and uses the Pegasus natives they encounter to build new alliances. The alliance runs Atlantis and is fighting the Wraith.

Jack doesn't show up until half way through, but he's a major player and uses his clout to make sure the Lanteans get a fair shake from Earth.

The story is complete, but there are lots of threads that the author could use to write more and I do hope she does.

Go give this fic some love... it deserves it!

Why This Must Be Read: Brighid is a talented writer and this is an early work that's now only available on the Wayback Machine. Because it's from the first part of the fandom, asterisks are used to indicate italics, and Kavanagh's name is spelled differently. This is like a benign version of S2E16, The Long Goodbye, where a device implants two near-Ancient personalities into John and Rodney. But this time they're lovers, not fighters - lovers who haven't been able to touch each other for thousands of years. It's a bit sad as the recreated personalities are temporary, and it affects John and Rodney deeply. A lovely story, very much recommended. (Gilbert Ryle was a philosopher interested in mind/body and consciousness.)

Disclosure: I made the donation through Fandom Trumps Hate for this fic. I had rec'd a fic by pipisafoat here before and was stoked to see an offering for a fic at FTH. I won the auction and this is that fic!

It's a wonderful piece set on Atlantis with a bunch of original characters. Indy is put in charge of Atlantis at the point where Weir, Sheppard, McKay and Beckett go back to Earth for a debriefing after "The Seige"... so it's a missing scene sort of thing.

Indy uses they pronouns and works (mostly) from a wheelchair. They and Weir already know each other, so Lizzie (as they call her) is comfortable leaving them in charge. While she's gone, Bates tries to mutiny and they find a Wraith on the city... all of which Indy has more-or-less prepared for.

Because there's no pairings or popular characters, this fic will be easily overlooked. I'm hoping by rec'ing it here, it will get more love!

Why This Must Be Read: Eep, where did November go? Slipping in a last rec as it's still Nov in most places. This is another fusion by

siria, but wildly different from the West Wing one I recently reccd. As the title suggests, it's set in the world of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, with Rodney, John and Ronon as the drag queens on a road trip (across an American desert, this time), to perform at a small town on the rez, where Teyla lives. As in Priscilla, it's a reckoning for Rodney with his past and with feelings he's suppressed for many years, and of course John and Ronon help him through it. It's wonderfully OTT, clever and hilarious, and a lot of fun!

Don't be put off by the fact that John's a ghost at the start, as he doesn't stay incorporeal thanks to portals and magical worlds within worlds. Recommended!

Why This Must Be Read: This is a novel-length World War II AU, set in the South Pacific and illustrated throughout with lots of period photos from the time. It's told from all of the team's POVs, particularly John's (he's a pilot, of course, with Rodney and Ronon on his flight crew and Teyla as a local liaison with intel about the enemy). Naturally, John gets thoroughly whumped, in the best genfic tradition. There's tons of atmosphere, friendship, teamwork, action and adventure, and it's a great read and a real tour de force.

In this they're both actors at a con panel for an SGA-like spinoff from the old "Wormhole Xtreme" show (heh) and John's in recovery, having gotten his act together after some years battling addiction, and is making a movie comeback. Naturally, there's been pining, and after the con panel, they have dinner...and I'll leave you to read the rest. It's another feelgood story, with great characterisation and a fun setting.

In only 3400 words, ficontessa creates a wonderfully recognisable AU, with Ronon and Teyla as John's friends, Carson patching him up, and Evan sorting out his disorganised paperwork. A big bonus is that Patrick Sheppard, while overinvolved, isn't a bastard or homophobic, and he and John clearly care about each other a lot. Plus, epistolary fic FTW and some outsider POV! It's cleverly done, and a great read. Ficontessa's a new SGA writer, so go leave encouragement!

Why This Must Be Read: This is a series, with the main initial fic told from several POVs (Lorne, Elizabeth, Caldwell and Sheppard), then a companion fic from Rodney's POV, and lastly a brief coda from Sheppard's POV as he battles nightmares in the infirmary. The series is about a disastrous mission where Sheppard and several Marines are ambushed and captured by the Genii, after which Atlantis undertakes a rescue mission. There's a ton of plot and drama, focus on the harsh decisions leaders sometimes have to make in terrible situations, and on the values and heroism of the Marines. It's filled with excellent characterization, and, as expected in

domarzione's work, features the usual cast of OCs - mostly marines, and Dr. Safir. As with all of the author's stories, there are bitingly realistic depictions of how the military functions - from strategy and tactics to internal politics and bureaucracy. The Jenny Code was reccd 13 years ago but the old link's expired and it deserves another mention. It's a tough read in places, incredibly well-written and very gripping.

Why This Must Be Read: This has been reccd before, but not for 8 years so it's time for a reminder. It's a very nice fic about Rodney becoming proficient with guns, adapting, and learning to survive in Pegasus. Why This Must Be Read: This is a classic AU and will be well known - a fusion of SGA with a His Dark Materials-like 'verse, with daemons. It's masterfully done, and an excellent read. I wonder how many of us remember, though, that there's a follow-up fic, actually a prequel (but you need to read Daemonology first). It's called A Monologue for Two Voices. The link is to Wayback, although the fic's still on LJ. It's a lovely character snapshot of Rodney and Tyk.

There's some nice slow-developing intimacy between John and Rodney, and lots of plot and drama as they try to escape from the king and then angry mobs. Also, I really love the chicken! An excellent read.
