Why This Must Be Read: This has been reccd before, but not for 8 years so it's time for a reminder. It's a very nice fic about Rodney becoming proficient with guns, adapting, and learning to survive in Pegasus. The characterisations are all absolutely spot on, with Penknife's usual fluid writing and some lovely snark and team banter. Plus it's nice to see Ford again, being a competent Marine. An excellent read.
He puts the whole thing out of his mind until there's the prospect of going off-world on the gate team. Sheppard seems to think there's a question about whether Rodney will agree to go, which Rodney finds irritating.
"Of course I should go," Rodney says. "No one else is as qualified, and the last thing I want is for a bunch of idiots to try to investigate alien technology and end up ruining everything they touch. Also, I have the Ancient gene now."
"Like a number of other people," Sheppard points out.
"Yes, but none of them is me."
"Which may be a point in their favor."
"You're asking me, though. Which means you know you need me for this. So why are we still talking?"
Sheppard gives him a measuring look, and then says, "Stop by the armory and pick up your gear. You do understand you could get killed out there?"
"I assure you, I'm heavily invested in my own survival, so if you're worried that my untimely death will weigh on your conscience--" He runs out of words abruptly at the look on Sheppard's face, which suggests that yes, it probably would. "You're the one who's supposed to fling yourself between my valuable brain and the bad guys," Rodney says in what he hopes is a completely different tone. "You're statistically much more likely to die."
"You're such a ray of sunshine," Sheppard says, but he sounds comforted, which Rodney thinks is perverse.
