Why This Must Be Read: I love stories that give us more Dave Sheppard, both his relationship with John and his own character, rather than the brief canon glimpse of him as an asshole. Also, this is Dave's POV, so an outsider viewpoint on John. Rhymer really likes to whump John so there's plenty of that, and lots of plot and gripping action/adventure in this story set in a dystopian AU Earth. An excellent read, with something of a twist!

Why This Must Be Read: This is a lovely character study of John as asexual and starved for touch and affection. Bironic deftly sketches out the background that formed him across the years, and it culminates with Teyla being an excellent friend, aided and abetted by Torren. Ultimately heartwarming, and very in character for John.

This one is an old favorite of mine that never fails to give me goosebumps.

A compelling Dave-POV. Seeing John through his eyes while the mystery of the main story enfolds is fascinating and makes me think of what defines John. What is it, that makes John John? And so I can perfectly understand Dave's reaction in the end.

Why This Must Be Read: Ronon becomes email pen pals with Dave Sheppard in an effort to practice writing English. I love this not only for its insight into Ronon, but for the way it explores Dave Sheppard and his relationship with his brother. Although they can be read separately, I definitely recommend reading the story that inspired this one (Homework by busaikko), which is the same story, but through Dave's POV.

I always enjoy seeing Ronon's take on humans and their strange ways, and his attempt to learn English in this is both hilarious and endearing.

Why this must be read:

A powerful look at the alternate timeline from "The Last Man" where John is ruled KIA. Wildcat takes us on an emotional journey of loss and what it does to those left behind. I love how Wildcat shows us the different effects death can have on different people. Dave Sheppard is faced with some very hard truths about himself and his relationships while Nancy is touched with painful memories and powerful grief. How Wildcat portrayed Nancy is such a high point in favor of this fic. We get to see how much she really did love Sheppard; seeing how sometimes love isn't enough to hold a marriage together was a powerful side journey. Another point of awesome to this fic was the details... the deep, slow ticking of the Sheppard grandfather clock, the light breeze at the funeral that Nancy's sure John engineered, the dark shadows around Jack O'Neill in the beginning. Very powerful stuff... And then the funeral. Wow... my chest was in pain at seeing how John's death touched his family, ex-wife, and team. Highly, highly, highly recommended!

Why This Must Be Read: To kick off this category, let's start off with a meeting that never happened in canon ... but should have! Jeannie Miller and Dave Sheppard are held hostage together, and compare notes about their families without (initially) realizing each others' true identities. Their banter is so much fun that it made me wish they'd had an opportunity to interact on the show, and it's always nice to see John and Rodney through their siblings' eyes.
