Why This Must Be Read: This is an excellent fic about what happens when Rodney's team, through no fault of their own, causes harm to Rodney. The event itself is brief and bloody, but the aftermath and how Teyla, Ronon and John desperately want Rodney's forgiveness, and how Rodney needs so badly to get over it, are poignant and meaningful. It's a little dark, but well worth the read.

Disclosure: I made the donation through Fandom Trumps Hate for this fic. I had rec'd a fic by pipisafoat here before and was stoked to see an offering for a fic at FTH. I won the auction and this is that fic!

It's a wonderful piece set on Atlantis with a bunch of original characters. Indy is put in charge of Atlantis at the point where Weir, Sheppard, McKay and Beckett go back to Earth for a debriefing after "The Seige"... so it's a missing scene sort of thing.

Indy uses they pronouns and works (mostly) from a wheelchair. They and Weir already know each other, so Lizzie (as they call her) is comfortable leaving them in charge. While she's gone, Bates tries to mutiny and they find a Wraith on the city... all of which Indy has more-or-less prepared for.

Because there's no pairings or popular characters, this fic will be easily overlooked. I'm hoping by rec'ing it here, it will get more love!

It's about her once again having to adapt and handle things differently than she used to on Earth. I like the unvarnished portrayal of Sheppard, and that Kate's skillful, and insightful. It's an episode tag to 'Common Ground' and 'Phantoms', set after 'Phantoms' - a short piece, but it rings very true.

Why This Must Be Read: This is a seriously great set of stories about John going through psychotherapy, as Kate helps him manage his defenses and gradually deal with a mission-related trauma that he's suppressing and denying, all the while trying to navigate his relationship with Rodney. This is honestly one of the best depictions of psychotherapy I've ever read, anywhere, and the metaphors for Sheppard's healing process are powerful.
Also, there's a companion-story with Rodney's POV: History of Maps, so I'm reccing them as a set.

Why This Must Be Read: This month I'm reccing stories featuring Kate Heightmeyer in her role as a therapist. The show didn't treat her well in this respect - I don't think she came across as very believable, and there was all the Hollywoody hypnosis stuff. So, as ever, "apply fanfic". These stories show Kate as she should have been - a skilled therapist. Due to the nature of SGA fandom, they mostly feature John as the patient, and sometimes Rodney. This one's a favourite - it's from early in Beadattitude's Checkmate 'Verse (in which John's been transformed into a small black cat) - in which Kate's skill crosses species barriers. It's a bang-on portrayal of Sheppard, and Sheppard-as-cat, astute and amusing.

Why This Must Be Read: On screen we didn't get to see nearly enough off-work friendship moments between the female characters, and thus I am glad that there are authors out there who take the time to investigate in writing such moments between the characters that I love - that we love. Sailing is such a moment between Kate and Teyla, whom, when we see them on screen, are always in a professional situation. In this story it's just two people finding common ground and allowing for a more informal sort of interaction.

Why This Must Be Read: Kate Heightmeyer is in some of my favorite episodes of SGA. I didn't really pay that much attention to her on screen. She's one of those minor characters that come to life in many of the brilliant stories in this fandom. In this one she's never "seen", but she's given Ronon a task I absolutely love; write a diary. This story gives me new insight into Ronon and has him put into words (or not) some of the issues he is struggling with. As a teacher, I love the focus on language. It's not very long, but manages to say so much in few words. It's also a great look at the team.

Why This Must Be Read: This story starts on a bleakly sad note; Atlantis has been lost and many died in the evacuation. Yet the author evokes a growing sense of hope and new beginnings as she moves from the perspective of Aiden Ford to Kate Heightmayer (this story is also exceptional for giving these two rarely used characters equal time to the leads) to Rodney to John. The tentative relationships are neither the point of the story nor an afterthought, but rather the natural outcome of the intersections of these people's emotional development. The author's characterizations are exquisite, despite this haunting story's shortness. I won't soon forget the image of Rodney tending the graves or the beauty of the moment in which John finally allows himself to show weakness and let Teyla comfort him.

Why This Must Be Read: Because Miera_c writes Jane Austen style fic that blows my mind, and I don't even read Jane Austen books. This is old fashioned romance at its best. I was originally weary of reading a period piece, but wow, this author brings a level of talent to writing fanfiction that I see rarely in others. The language and style is impressive, and how she writes Cameron and Elizabeth's evolving relationship sells you the story with no qualms or disbelief. Plus, John also stares as Elizabeth's brother, and the main cast makes a great read for all the friendships and relationships involved.

This is a unique gem in more than one sense. An AU based off of Jane Austin books, and its based around a pairing that should be cracky, but somehow just works.

havocthecat continues what was begun there and also expands a great deal, giving the reader a detailed look at the world the characters now live in. Familiar faces abound, some of them in very intriguing circumstances. Havoc doesn't fail to give us an extremely well-written and well-planned story as the coming conflict takes an unexpected turn, bringing an old friend of Elizabeth's back into her life. And this threesome? Is just plain sexy.

sache8, are in creating this entire world and still keeping the characters true. I would have loved to have recc'ed the entire verse, but I don't think that's really possible, so I'm recc'ing the introductory story and hope that will compel you to read the rest :)

To give a quick overview of the verse (which has a bit more Atlantis than SG1), Elizabeth is queen of Atalan a medieval/renaissane type city, with Landry & Radek as the rulers of nearby kingdoms. John comes to Atalan after leaving his homeland and is accepted into her court. Elizabeth's ladies in waiting are Laura Cadman and Kate Heightmeyer and her advisors include her cousin Daniel, as well as Jack and Hammond. Many characters appear in familiar roles with Carson being the court physician and Peter Grodin is her secretary (for lack of a better word). As the stories progress it seems that the writers are going to put in every major character from Stargate and later stories introduce Vala, Janet and Cameron (as John's cousin :) ) just to name a few

One of the major stories running through this 'verse is the courtship between John and Elizabeth, but you will (if you continue reading the stories) encounter some pairings you would never have considered, such as Jack and Sarah Gardner (no really :) ), but the authors make it completely plausible. Personally I'm still waiting for more Rodney and Sam!

this is the story that put the idea of Kate/Elizabeth into my head and did so through the extremely wonderful characterization of Elizabeth. Depending on your corner of fandom, Elizabeth doesn't get the treatment she deserves.

havocthecat, however, writes an Elizabeth that is insanely complex and varied. This is a REAL Elizabeth. One you can feel Torri inhabiting, which can't be said for some characterizations around fandom. I always love reading

havocthecat's fanfiction with Elizabeth, whether she's evil, mischievious, duty-driven, or all of the above with a side of choca-holic thrown into it for fun, she's always amazing. This story? ESPECIALLY SO.

A quiet conversation, chocolate appreciation, and sex, it's not a side of Elizabeth we get to see often and it's just a wonderful read.

Why This Must Be Read: Someone wrote Kate fic! Do you know just how hard it is to find fic that features Kate? And it relates directly to her work as a psychologist, and it doesn't involve her solely reflecting other characters' emotions, words, and actions for the purpose of the story. It's hard to write the characterization of a psychologist during therapy, but we've gotten strong indications on the show of Kate's personality, not just her work persona, and it's nice to see someone exploring the non-work side of her, and how it meshes with the purpose she serves for the Atlantis expedition.
