This story was originally written for a Rough Trade challenge. The fact that it's on the Wild Hare site and not her personal site means that Keira hasn't edited it and there's a note that it may never be edited. So there's a 'what you see is what you get' warning to be aware of. But if you don't subscribe to Wild Hare, you may miss seeing this story again. (And if you're one of the three people in fandom that have never read Keira's work, she doesn't tolerate concrit or begging for more. So don't.)

Another Atlantis-focused fic, but Jack O'Neill has a major part in this story.

It's a story of xenophobia, greed, and the IOA being total asshats (as Keira would say!).

After an IOA-sanctioned experiment by Carson Beckett on John Sheppard, but without John's knowledge or permission, a mutated virus got loose on Atlantis. It changes all those that survive to something other than human.

It's an interesting story about what makes us human, and how greed for powerful weapons and super-soldiers can skew one's morals.

Jack represents the US in this morality play, and -- even among his team mates -- is the only one who truly understands that 'people' are 'people'.

The Asgard are also major players in this story and we don't find out why until the end (which I'm not going to spoil!).

And interesting story with all of the major Stargate players.

Why This Must Be Read: This is the ultimate fix-it story. It starts with the apocalyptic destruction of Atlantis, but for reasons that don't need exploring at this juncture, John and Rodney get sent back many years in time, at the point of the explosion. John comes to on his wedding day to Nancy and he and Rodney meet up and get to do it all over. The trick is that they have to avoid the mistakes they made first time around without changing things so much they don't get to go to Atlantis. It's a nifty idea and well executed - a great ride with a ton of plot, even an evil conspiracy. There are some issues - it might not have been betaed as there are quite a few typos. But I'm fussy about that kind of thing and I didn't need to back-button out - the fic drew me in, despite a few rough edges. I recommend it for an engrossing read.

Why This Must Be Read: Who's always wanted to know more about Ronon, his Satedan culture? *raises hand* Yeah, me too. This little gem of a fic is set during Ronon's first days in Atlantis and we see his search for a little bit of home that's inspired by a small, innocuous scene from Duet. He finds that piece and some kindness through Miko Kusanagi. Some might argue that this is jossed after such episodes as Sateda, but what do we know about how Satedans ate their meals? We're not exactly getting cultural nuances with our sci-fi. But I digress. We also see some of our more prominent Atlanteans (i.e. Sheppard) through Ronon's eyes, which is always fun. Also, if you have a little bit of a yen for languages this will feed that vice too.

Why This Must Be Read: Light Up, Light Up cleverly expands of the meaning of the word "team" into every member of the city and shows just how vital every person is to the well-being of the whole. It's well established that I'll read anything with mundane life on Atlantis but this story feels a bit like the author had a checklist of all my likes and loves. briarpipe even satisfies my secret yen for the Atlantis kitchen staff! The author pulls together the many disparate vignettes of what's happening in the lives of both minor and major characters into such a touching portrait of the Atlantis community that the slowly building and quite suspenseful mystery snuck up on me.

I highly recommend this story, which is full of laugh-out loud funny lines (the Zelenka-McKay slap fight is a must-read) and sentences that make me ache with their beauty. The list left on the wall in Bravo Company's barracks caused me to chuckle and cry at the very same time. Teyla's scenes are heartbreaking. Each character is fully fleshed out, allowing me sneak peeks into their back stories. Many favorites appear such as the Athosians, Zelenka, Miko, Marie Ko, the Marines, even the city of Atlantis. I love John interacting with the various members of the military and using the chair. I especially adore the author's Lorne voice; it's as wistful, snarky, sensitive and insightful as I always imagine.

If you enjoy OT4, this author is a master of team love in both the carnal and platonic sense and has many other excellent stories you should check out. I was supposed to be editing a law review article for the last couple hours (darn you seductive internets!) so I swear I'll shut up for a while now.

Why This Must Be Read:
It's become apparent to me that when someone wants to write an incredibly thoughtful SGA story, s/he often chooses Miko as the POV character. I absolutely love seeing Pegasus through Miko's eyes; her observations are not at all what Rodney sees or John sees or even what Elizabeth sees. Rachel does a wonderful job of fleshing out this character who gets a few onscreen minutes as a joke into a nuanced and strong woman. The femslash in this story is subtle; in the end, I think we readers are as surprised by Laura's feelings as Miko is. But then, like Miko, we look back over past events and we see all the clues--the affection, the concern--sitting right out in the open waiting to be noticed. There is a very interesting discussion of "Women's Work" HERE that I would also check out if you enjoy reading this fic.

Why This Must Be Read: Besides the fact that this fic came in second place as the Isis Secondary 'Ship Awards, this story is fun to read. The author's own summary sums it up best: Miko is upset and Rodney cheers her up with some unusual compliments. By the end of this story you will be snickering over the revenge Rodney takes on behalf of Miko and squeeing over the sweetness he shows to her. Why This Must Be Read:This story focuses on one Atlantis' background characters, Dr. Miko Kusanagi. Small, shy, retiring Miko--utterly loyal, fiercely determined, completely unstoppable, and tougher-than-even-she-knows Miko, who does what she must, even if it's horrific and costs her everything. One of the things I liked most about this fic was how the author kept the tension high throughout--this is not an easy fic to read--I gnawed my fingernails all the way to the end.

Why This Must Be Read: Miko is almost entirely a fanon creation. We saw her for about 30 seconds in "Letters From Pegasus," smooshed the barely-mentioned name of Dr. Kusanagi in with her character (dear God, we have to have at least one female on the show with the ATA gene, right?), and a large portion of the fandom fell in love with Miko's sheer potential. Dumais was in one episode before she died in a fairly tragic and horrific way. Brighid takes these characters and writes the quiet, behind-the-scenes story of their relationship, and shows how Miko grieves, and eventually moves on while keeping Dumais' memory alive.
