Why This Must Be Read: This is a gripping and romantic story, but JaneElliot's journals and prior website are disestablished now, so this story can only be accessed via Wayback. I thought I'd rec it as it hasn't been done here before, so that there's a working link, and as it's a marvellous read. It's an AU where Rodney's connected with the SGC but John's a homeless vet, and they literally run into each other, as the excerpt below describes. Rodney then takes John home while he slowly recuperates, which goes about how you might expect, given Rodney's social skills and John's near-feral state. The characterisations are excellent, and it's enormously satisfying - try not to stay up all night reading!

Why This Must Be Read: This is a friendship story from Rodney's POV, where Rodney notices John's a bit flat and wants to cheer him up, Kavanagh hoards music MP3s, and John discovers something special about the puddlejumpers. Written between seasons and very slightly jossed, but not so it matters. Highly recommended - funny, with great characterisation. And - bonus! [personal profile] bluflamingo  did a remix of part of the story: Necessary Things (Settling the Balance)

Why this must be read:

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a Kavanagh fan. And yet, one just can't help but feel for him in this fantastic fic by SGAtlantisLight. Elizabeth is planning a Commemoration Day celebration to honor the departed of the Atlantis expedition and asks for pics of the various lost personnel.  Kavanagh delivers a disk containing some very moving pics. I was tearing up something fierce by the time I got to where it mentioned the Sumner subdirectory of pics. Images of the lost move me like nothing else (seeing the faces of the lost give them humanity to me, and not just a statistic); reading about the pics of Sumner and the Atlantis just made for a fantastic angst fic. Go enjoy this well characterized and written fic; don't forget the hankies!

Story Summary: Weir needs pictures of Atlantis's fallen for a commemoration service.

Why This Must Be Read: In Necessary Things, set in the months after the siege ends and before they return to Earth for debrief, Rodney distracts himself from his emotions by embarking on a quest for music, specifically access to Kavanaugh's ipod. Their face-offs are every bit as hilarious as you'd expect. Rodney works on creating an Atlantis music library from everyone's collections, getting his hands on Kavanaugh's music, and debating just what the Ancients' music might have been like (I laughed out loud when he and John come up with lyrics for Ancient country songs). However, he and the reader slowly begin to notice subtle signs that all is not well with John. The story is cleverly structured and Sheppard is so busy with Caldwell, the (remaining) new military personnel and the clean-up that more than half the story goes by before the real A-plot becomes clear. Sheppard is a master of concealing his emotions and skillfully uses distractions to avoid discussing emotions (one such misdirection tactic, a previously unknown system that he reveals to Rodney is a quite elegant concept). Rodney is easily forgiven for how long it takes him to catch on. Eventually though, Rodney does realize what Teyla already recognized and tried to tell him; unlike the rest of them, Sheppard has not moved on from the grief and pain for those they lost and is still struggling for closure.

The thought and care that must have gone into this is obvious and I can only marvel at how easy the author makes it look to balance the pacing and emotions in this witty, melancholy and bittersweet character study. It's a gorgeous and deceptively light piece that haunted me long after I finished reading.

You also must read the note-perfect remix, more a missing scene, of the story. Rodney barters a flying lesson on the jumpers from Sheppard to Kavanaugh in Necessary Things. That lesson is the the subject of bluflamingo's sad and subtle remix, Necessary Things (settling the balance). The flying lesson is both every bit as awful as John expected and not awful at all. It takes a very talented author to make Kavanaugh sympathetic and she captures John's wit, sarcasm, anguish and loyalty wonderfully. The moment he simultaneously relishes the experience of flying a jumper and pines for the sound of rotors overhead made my chest hurt. I appreciate how insightfully she conveys John's turmoil and deepens my enjoyment of what was already a favorite story. I love both these authors and would recommend everything they've written; their styles are quite different and bluflamingo must be commended for how the remix feels true to both her own work and that of the original's author.

Why This Must Be Read: Have you ever snickered at the increasingly ridiculous idea that the SGC can still be top-secret after all these years? Then this delightful remix of Stop the Presses by Cofax is definitely for you!

Colin Jameson, a reporter from LA, comes to Colorado Springs at the behest of his friend, Matt Yurievich, to attend a press conference by one Dr. Berend Kavanagh. Despite the apparent ridiculousness of his claims, these two reporters have added up enough suspicious events over the years – the “Denver flu,” hallucinatory creatures infesting Colorado Springs, an entire building disappearing, the incident in LA in Resurrection, and Alex Colson’s disappearance after his attempt to prove the existence of aliens, just to name a few – to wonder if there’s really a story there. But when Kavanagh’s press conference gets crashed and things suddenly turn deadly, will Colin stay alive long enough to get the story out to the public?

An excellent Cassie scene, a seriously hilariously-in-character Jack O’Neill cameo, and one of the only sympathetic treatments of reporters that I’ve seen outside the Lois and Clark fandom. Stop the Presses is an affectionate poke at the SGC’s laughable secrecy, and one you’re sure to enjoy.

Why This Must Be Read:
If I had to describe this fic is one word, it would be 'hot'! If I had to describe it in three, it would be hot, hot, hot! This is a great work of smut, making 'dirty talk' so much fun.

On a less smutty superficial note. Both of the characterisations are done really well. Kavanagh is completely spot-on. He's still the ass we all know and love but we get to see the deeper side of him and some of the reasons for his behaviour.

The whole thing is very real in that they're both being very 'male' and are therefore unable to admit their true feelings or willing to talk about anything important. But as always actions speak louder than words.

Personally, I also love fics that fit in around the events of Critical Mass and Kavanagh's canon comings and goings and this is a great example.

I love this fic. It's another one of those that tries to explain Kavanagh's attitude whilst keeping him completely in character. It also fills in some of the questions from Critical Mass very nicely. The slowly budding friendship between Kavanagh and Lorne is just an added bonus.

It makes Kavanagh seem more human, whilst keeping him in character and shows us what a relationship between two brilliant, socially-maladjusted science geeks would be like.

This is a mission told from Kavanagh's POV. It has a great Kavanagh voice. He starts off being a snarky, melodramatic jerk and ends up pretty much the same. LOL :D But throughout the story are hints that there's a deeper side to him, that he has his one set of ideals and lives to them and that he's been hurt enough times to be closed off now.

Plus how could you resist a fic that refers to John and Rodney as "the olsen twins" and Weir as "Lenin on Prozac". *g*

Why This Must Be Read:The fic comprises of a small set of three emails sent by Kavanagh, technically set post "Critical Mass" (but only just, hence it's more of a tag) and relate to the episode, going some way to explaining what he said during it. I found it quite touching despite the shortness, the format working really well for the subject matter - subtle but effective. I had no trouble at all picturing Kavanagh as having written them, great characterisation whilst staying true to how he's been on show. A great addition to what was seen in the episode, developing on it really well.

Why This Must Be Read: Whilst not primarily about Kavanagh, this story is a wonderful piece for secondary characters - including him. One of a few stories that show him working with others, as part of a functioning team. He still has the element of jerk here (as is needed since he's no angel by far) but its offset with him as a person, and in a decent context and characterisation. A thoroughly enjoyable and well thought out story that shows Kavanagh to be three-dimensional just like all the other characters in it, despite the fact none of them are well developed on show. Also wonderful due to the premise it's set on - the 'what if' set in the alternate "Before I Sleep" timeline.

Why This Must Be Read: I never expected to enjoy a slash fic with a Kavanagh pairing, let alone this unexpected one. I think what makes this piece powerful is that no one knew what he was going through. He's the whiney jerk, but underneath he'd been dealing with something that could have torn apart many other people and yet he dealt with that, and more, all alone. The revelations really add both strength and depth to his character. The general air of the fic is sad, yet it holds a sense at pride and honour for those they've lost, and his contribution to it adds to sense that ultimately everyone is united, even though he has been an outsider in many ways he is still part of their city and he still cares just as much, if not more, about what has occured over the course of the trip and the siege.

Why This Must Be Read: What makes this fic stand out is that Kavanagh is still the same to everyone as we see him, he's ridiculed, and it's only one character who seems to see further into his actions and surprisingly that is Elizabeth Weir. I liked the fact she could get over past conceptions and give him another chance when others wouldn't, it adds more to both characters and establishes Kavanagh as slightly more insecure as one might imagine, aware of his unpopularness and disliking it at least somewhat - he does care here no matter how much he would like not to - it shows a more human representation of his character.

Why This Must Be Read: Despite the fact this isn't finished the first chapter, which is only Kavanaugh/Simpson, amazed me. Reading it I actually felt like he wasn't a bad guy, I felt sympathy for him and somehow the author writing Simpson's frustrating infatuation for him also felt believable; he isn't just some jerk and he's not a greasy slimy guy no one likes here - I love the way they make him alot more than that, and in a way I still haven't seen since. If you don't mind the rating (which is mainly for the later chapters that have yet to materialise - so far I'd say it's just Mature rated stuff) and you want to see a good version of Kavanaugh ship written then this is what I recommend. It's not yet full developed in plot or in how the ship might work but it was enough to make me wish people would write Kavanagh ship more often, because if done right it's one way to show he is still human and to be able to explore how he is.

Why This Must Be Read: Because it's so rare to see fic focusing on Kavanagh not simply as a jerk and even rarer to have it from his point of view. I really enjoyed this look into the team usual exploits and tribulations from an outside, more impartial view, even though he obviously doesn't have a high view of them. I felt like this story expanded my perceptions of all the characters involved, and for Kavanagh it did a wonderful job of not making him out of character whilst still evoking some sympathy for him - it added depth to him rather than changing who he was or merely reinforcing the simple view we get from the show alone.
