Why This Must Be Read: This is a great "difficult reconciliation" and "forever friends" AU where the focus is on Rodney and John's estranged friendship, but there's also lots of gripping plot. Sholio reccd it a while ago in the H/C category, and that rec's very much worth reading. In this AU, the fork in the road is the end of S4 after 'Adrift', when John and Rodney never reconcile after the issue with Elizabeth being treated with nanites and the expedition founders and is recalled to Earth. Rodney hasn't seen John for a long time when he turns up at Rodney's house in the desert near Area 51 needing help, as the retrovirus changes from 'Conversion' have returned and are killing John.
This fic is Gen and is complete in itself, but there's also a sequel written by Sarah_T, called you already know how this will end. It's John/Teyla, which is how Sarah_T rolls.

melonbutterfly explores a trans John finally "getting right" through this cracky premise. There's a sidebar of John/Rodney in there, but this is basically a character piece about John.

"This fic came about as the result of an evening of chatting (and drinking) with some awesome cool GW whumpers at the Chicago SG convention last month. As a frequent whump writer I was given the task of writing a story that included these prompts: Kidnapping, drippy blood, restraints, John's ATA gene in a key role, and John to 'really go off the deep end'. Despite the odd combination, I think I've squeezed everything in in some fashion or other."

And boy, did she squeeze in everything! *ggg* For this one, add thrilling, suspense-packed, resourceful to the usual merits of Tepring's writing (such as good characterization, voices etc). At first it seems to be a little "off" regarding the characters and confusing regarding the events, but keep reading because you won't have to wait long for everything to make more sense with each part you read and then you'll pass the point of no return and you won't be able stop reading. So, don't start this if you should go to bed or to work. ;-)

I also very much like Radek in this and the aspects of "military versus scientist competition" that come to a very satisfying end.

This is set in S5 when John and Rodney are already good friends but despite this they guys are still learning more about themselves and their friedship. Tepring is a master of this. Don't miss this one.

Tepring does an excellent job showing how Rodney gets to know John and in this process also undergoes his own kind of development, resulting in a better knowledge of who he and John really are, under the surface. Her understanding of the characters, what makes them tick, is just *awesome*. She knows the boys so well. Their interactions, their voices and characteristics - spot on. Tepring shows the depth which the series itself couldn't show in 43 short minutes per episode.

Why This Must Be Read: Although this story is more about Rodney worrying about John, for me it fits perfectly into the Rodney McKay category because we get to see the Rodney beneath the snarky exterior. As far as I can tell, this is the author's first Stargate fic, but I would never have guessed without checking, because the characterization seems just spot-on. In this story, Rodney has a pretty good idea of how he is typically viewed by others, and he's having a little trouble with his reception after his moment of heroism in "Hide and Seek" — not to mention with that moment itself. John, meanwhile, clearly knows just what Rodney's trying to process. The show never gave us just how Rodney became a part of the primary gate team, and this story provides a very likely version.

wildcat88 crafts a tight, strong story here. The team encounters danger despite exercising reasonable caution, and Rodney is badly hurt. Teyla and Ronon are secondary but not invisible (and their typical fic-plot roles are swapped here, entirely believably). John is exasperated by Rodney just as much as he is concerned, and the one thing neither will do is let the other go when danger threatens.

I'm a total sucker for sleep-deprivation fics, and this is a particularly charming one. Rodney's usually the one subjected to this particular discomfort, and in this story he expects to undergo the required period of sleeplessness once more ... but the locals insist on John. So Rodney carefully selects which periods he'll monitor, because he knows what embarrassments his friend would prefer no one else see.

Why This Must Be Read: This fandom has the most whacked-out AUs of any fandom I've ever been in. And I love it. :D Actually, by SGA standards, this is relatively tame. Rodney runs an aquarium, and John ... is an orca. It probably says a lot about this fandom that he totally comes across as John despite being a whale. Various other cast members appear as both human and non-human denizens of the water park. This is short and adorable, and total cracked-out fun!

Why This Must Be Read: Rodney's on Earth when a frightened, injured and possibly insane Sheppard turns up at his doorstep, with a seemingly unbelievable story of conspiracy involving the SGC. Unsure who to trust, Rodney turns to Daniel for help.

This story has a great dynamic between all three men. I still have a big soft spot for Daniel going back to the early days of SG1, and he's just the right blend of sympathetic, snarky and skeptical. This was written circa SGA season four, so Rodney and Daniel had not yet interacted (much) in canon, but I really like their verbal sparring as depicted here -- they're not really friends yet, but they're taking the first cautious steps towards it. And Rodney's blend of worry and wariness towards Sheppard is pitch-perfect, as he struggles to unravel the truth, caught between his rational mind's insistence that Sheppard must be insane, and the irrational urge to take a leap of faith to help his friend.

The character voices are spot-on; it's funny and sweet and snarky and just absolutely, perfectly them.

Why This Must Be Read: One of the things I love most about this story is the way that it takes a common slash trope (coming out) and turns it on its ear by writing it in a gen kind of way -- not that the story necessarily precludes the possibility of a relationship in the future if you wanted to see it that way, but that's not what they have now, and that's not what this story is about: it's about being close enough to someone to tell them anything, including things you've never told anyone else. The casual comfortableness that John and Rodney have with each other is one of my favorite things about their friendship, and that is captured beautifully here.

Why This Must Be Read: This story dates from the hiatus between seasons one and two, when Siege tags were springing up all over the place and being subsequently jossed by canon. It hasn't been badly jossed, though -- just a few minor details that might be slightly jarring from the vantage of knowing how the episode actually turns out.

And the story itself is wonderful -- Rodney's quest for the contents of Kavanagh's iPod leads him into the unfamiliar and (for him) uncomfortable realm of friendship, specifically involving one Major John Sheppard, USAF. John and Rodney's interactions are awkward and sweetly tentative as they grapple with their personal demons and find unexpected comfort in each others' company. Both John and Rodney's characterizations are sensitively drawn, and the story's language is beautifully descriptive in some places, hilarious in others, and melancholy just when it's needed. This is about recovery and healing and connection, and offers a glimpse of the solid foundations of a deep and lasting friendship.
