Why This Must Be Read: If the Ancient gene was such a valuable commodity in Atlantis that they wrote a completely ignorant and inexperienced John into the mission based on the strength of his, why would they ignore a young, vastly experienced guy who already knew about everything and had the gene as well?

In this two-part series, they didn't... and clone!Jack ends up as part of the Atlantis expedition.

These two stories don't actually get us to Atlantis, but it's an intriguing, well-written premise. And who knows? Maybe some feedback will prompt the author to write more! :)

Why This Must Be Read: This is Cassie and mini!Jack, working at a diner, and meeting various crossover characters. That's it, really. And yet there is something about this fic that delights me: Cassie and mini!Jack wholly out of the loop, as they should be. Jack knows who Cassie is, but can't say anything, and has no knowledge of events like Janet's death that take place after he leaves the SGC; Cassie herself has no idea that "Jon" might be someone else, as his existence isn't something that would qualify for "need to know."

I personally recognized one crossover but not the other, and it didn't matter in the slightest. It's just fun to see them interacting with one another, when we know so much more than they do and we can understand so much that they can't!

Is this the future I envision for these two? Probably not. But they're both happy, and I don't see what else we could want for Cassie and mini!Jack.

Why This Must Be Read: This is the ultimate fix-it story. It starts with the apocalyptic destruction of Atlantis, but for reasons that don't need exploring at this juncture, John and Rodney get sent back many years in time, at the point of the explosion. John comes to on his wedding day to Nancy and he and Rodney meet up and get to do it all over. The trick is that they have to avoid the mistakes they made first time around without changing things so much they don't get to go to Atlantis. It's a nifty idea and well executed - a great ride with a ton of plot, even an evil conspiracy. There are some issues - it might not have been betaed as there are quite a few typos. But I'm fussy about that kind of thing and I didn't need to back-button out - the fic drew me in, despite a few rough edges. I recommend it for an engrossing read.

Link: Read My Lips

Why this must be read: This is an Atlantis-based AU that has one major difference from canon: John Sheppard is a deaf mathematician. He and Rodney have the best meeting ever, he proves himself just as necessary to the expedition as he did when he was a Major, and he has a terrible, horrible backstory. (Spoiler: he wasn’t born deaf)

I love how John’s physical impairment alters canon events, and changes the way the expedition members relate to him. And I love that at the core of himself John is just the same as he always was, ready to do what’s necessary to protect the people he loves.

As always, [livejournal.com profile] nagi_schwarz does a wonderful job with the variety of POVs she employs to fill out this 'verse and make it work so well. She's especially adept at writing Evan as John's put-upon translator, and Jonathan as the tortured clone who has to build a whole new life for himself. Is there anything she can't write in this fandom? Answer: no! ::grins::

Why This Must Be Read: There are so many reasons why this story should be read, not the least of which is Mhalachai's amazing writing. Mhalachai does a wonderful job setting up what should be a rather awkward crossover, yet makes it seem effortless. The pacing is perfect and, best of all, other than the sudden existence of the supernatural, this isn't really an AU story, not entirely. The author even slips in a reason as to why we don't see any were-creatures in the SGC (done just as seamlessly as everything else in this story).
The main reason this should be read, however, aren't the vampires and werewolves. It's clone Jack. This is possibly the best rendition of the character I've ever read. He's recognizably Jack, but in a restrained way as he tries (and fails) not to bring attention to himself. He's a little bit bitter, a lot sarcastic and can't help but look at his fellow students and think that they're the same age Charlie would've been if he hadn't died. And even further underneath that is the battle-hardened soldier, the one that only hesitates for a moment before going after a friend who's been kidnapped by werewolves. Watching others react to clone Jack as they struggle to figure him out is just as entertaining as Jack's reactions to everything around him.
The only major flaw to this story is that there is, sadly, no follow-up.

Summary: "Save the Children, get them out of here." SW/SG-1/Buffy Cross

Why This Must Be Read: It takes a talented author to balance and weave a story based on two fandoms, this one manages brilliantly with three. This crossover centers on one of my favorite characters in the SG-1 universe, the Jack clone from 'Fragile Balance'. A lot of stories and crossovers try to flesh him out, give him a story and purpose, this fic manages to do all that and not compromise the fact that this is Jack O'Neill. Buffy is his partner for this particular adventure (she'd say he was the other way around, of course) and this is Post-Chosen Buffy with lots of angst but also lots of experience. Their task? To save the children. Star Wars fans can probably guess what that means. And the brilliant thing about this fic? Neither Buffy nor Jack know about the SW universe so if you're not a SW fan you learn along with them, and if you are, you catch all the nifty nuances. Win-win, methinks.

Extra: "Changing the Death Toll" is finished but the author started a sequel which hasn't been updated in awhile, Live in This World, Year Zero. It deals with the continuation of the plot as well as delving into what's happening with those left behind. Not recommended if you want a neat finish but it's good writing for those who get hooked on the first part.

Why This Must Be Read: In this lovely friendship fic, Jack and Daniel sit and talk over a game of chess sometime in Season Seven. There's one little twist, though: this isn't Colonel Jack O'Neill, but his clone from Fragile Balance.

Over the course of their conversation, we recognize that Daniel's close friendship with Jack hasn't changed, despite the huge differences in their lives. There's great Jack and Daniel banter and humor, of course. But there's also insight and understanding, and the quiet undercurrent of pain from two people who aren't quite what they were and never can be again.

Any Tallulah Rasa fic is sure to be a pleasure, and this one is no exception.

There is some bitter in the sweet for clone!Jack and Daniel, but it is the old guy who tugs the heartstrings in this one.

Why This Must Be Read: This series follows Jack Gallagher (a.k.a. mini-Jack) through high school, into the Air Force Academy and eventually the SGC. This brings in lots of excellent Jack-on-Jack action, as well as showing how SG1 deal with having two of them running around the place, and the plot of each fic is sufficiently different for this to not be solely a "growing-up" style series. My favourites are "Friends & Enemies" and "Betrayed", possibly because the plots are a lot more SGC-based and by this point Traycer had gotten more of a handle on how she wanted to portray mini-Jack.<br

Why This Must Be Read: The rogue NID wants a sample of Jack’s genetic material, so it’s all systems go to protect mini-Jack (since he’s in school and not in a highly classified military base). Things don’t always go to plan though, for instance mini-Jack is just as good at manipulating junior officers as General Jack, and General Jack seems to forget that he does occasionally leave the mountain. There's a lot of misdirection from friends as well as enemies, Teal'c in Jaffa revenge mode, car chases, Malcolm Barrett ogling Sam, near-M*A*S*H-like medical emergencies, plus a very forthright old biddy and Jack's strange gifts for baking.. and other.. stuff..

NB. There are a couple of original characters (Kris Martin and Sassy O’Connor) who previously appeared in Cjay’s “The Hard Candy Colonel” and “Resonance” (crossover with NCIS). I hadn’t read either before looking at “Candlestick Chronicles” and didn’t find it too confusing, but thought I’d better mention it :)

Identity crises, angstful second-guessing and Asgard-style philosophising abounds.

One of the difficulties about writing mini!Jack if you want to write him into a relationship, speaking from my own experience, is that pairing him with most girls "his" age feels somewhat statutory, and most older women (or men) either wouldn't be attracted to him, or if they are their taste is questionable. ;-) Jinx solved that problem by bringing in a character with a background strikingly similar in some ways to mini!Jack's--Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Dawn Summers. (For those who don't know Buffy, Dawn was a mystical "key" between dimensions who was magically transformed into a teenage girl and given memories of being Buffy's sister.) The two characters bounce off each other beautifully, and because Dawn is neither too old nor too young for mini!Jack...it makes them a great couple. :-) And mini!Jack's reaction to the Buffyverse gang and what they deal with is priceless too. :-)
