Why This Must Be Read: I disliked Unending for many, many reasons. This wonderful story is an excellent episode fix for one of the most egregious flaws: the blink-and-you-miss-it reaction to the loss of an entire race.

When news of the Asgard's fate reaches Atlantis, Caldwell reaches out to Hermiod. What follows is a tribute to the Asgard, a nod to Cimmeria, the meaning of friendship and camaraderie, and a much more satisfying sendoff than anything in the show.

Thor and the Asgard deserved better, and this lovely fic gives it to them!

Why This Must Be Read: Another excellent AU by ficontessa, and I couldn't resist reccing this one as well. In this they're both actors at a con panel for an SGA-like spinoff from the old "Wormhole Xtreme" show (heh) and John's in recovery, having gotten his act together after some years battling addiction, and is making a movie comeback. Naturally, there's been pining, and after the con panel, they have dinner...and I'll leave you to read the rest. It's another feelgood story, with great characterisation and a fun setting.

Why This Must Be Read: This is a series, with the main initial fic told from several POVs (Lorne, Elizabeth, Caldwell and Sheppard), then a companion fic from Rodney's POV, and lastly a brief coda from Sheppard's POV as he battles nightmares in the infirmary. The series is about a disastrous mission where Sheppard and several Marines are ambushed and captured by the Genii, after which Atlantis undertakes a rescue mission. There's a ton of plot and drama, focus on the harsh decisions leaders sometimes have to make in terrible situations, and on the values and heroism of the Marines. It's filled with excellent characterization, and, as expected in[personal profile] domarzione's work, features the usual cast of OCs - mostly marines, and Dr. Safir. As with all of the author's stories, there are bitingly realistic depictions of how the military functions - from strategy and tactics to internal politics and bureaucracy. The Jenny Code was reccd 13 years ago but the old link's expired and it deserves another mention. It's a tough read in places, incredibly well-written and very gripping.

After events of Coup d'Etat, General O'Neill arrives on Atlantis on the Daedalus, along with Richard Woolsey. They want to speak to Elizabeth Weir about a number of issues.

Why This Must Be Read:

Just a nice fic where O'Neill goes to Atlantis to follow up on what happened after the coup among the Genii. It turns out that Elizabeth has other things on her mind and O'Neill figures that out -- and then has to deal with it.

Why This Must Be Read: An AU fusion with the movie of the same name, featuring drama from a natural disaster. John (Director of the Office of Emergency Management) and Rodney (a geophysicist) are caught up in an earthquake that causes an eruption of lava in downtown Los Angeles. There's action and adventure, lots of Shrift's excellently snarky dialogue, and some romance in the mix. An excellent and dramatic read!

Why This Must Be Read: This is a bit of a brain-teaser, like a lot of fics about time travel - Rodney sets SG1 straight about the real outcome of the events of 'Moebius' (the SG1 episode). The ending's a classic - poor Rodney! The story starts just after 'The Siege', when senior staff have been recalled to the SGC. Very cleverly written, and highly recommended.

Why This Must Be Read: This isn't tagged AU on AO3 but it deviates enough from canon, especially at the end, that I consider it an AU, and in fact Springwoof notes on the original post "AU sometime after Season 3's Common Ground." Anyway, it's an amazing read with the team stuck on a world with an alien race, which is where the worldbuilding comes in. I love the imaginative details of the alien culture who aren't just "Pegasus humans", but truly different. It's also excellent action/adventure, crammed with plot, and a really great story.

Summary: Lorne was royally screwed. Not because he had just found out that his commander has a thing for him and he didn't return his feelings, it was because he did. The only thing that stood in the way was Lorne's integrity, and he wasn't sure he was such an honorable man.

Why This Must Be Read: Ayama_chi creates another excellent story of how John and Evan both fight for their love to each other and their commitment to their duty as servicemen. Through the entire story, you can see them constantly orbiting each other and when they do finally get together, the reader cheers for the two of them. Excellent characterization and storyline.

Why This Must Be Read: I have a guilty pleasure for crossovers that work with the actors' appearances in different shows. So, when Mitch Pileggi made a guest appearance on Supernatural I had a geek out and then hoped for crossovers. I was pleased to find this one. Also, if you like that make you crave a 100,000 word epic to take care of that ending that's just begging to be continued, this fits the bill. But YMMV, so take care that the bunnies don't snap at your ankles as you read!

Why this must be read:

Sholio has one of the best talents for tight action/adventure plots driven by characterizations that will leave your jaw on the floor. She delivers again in this fast-driven fight for survival on an ice planet (think Hoth in Star Wars) with a downed Daedalus,  Wraith-worshipping saboteurs, rising tensions between scientists and military, and big-butt wolves. To crown this glory of a story is Sholio's Rodney. He's still the arrogant and extremely socially awkward scientist and yet... There's that harder edge to him; the one that he acquired by going off world and experiencing more than just the lab.  He's willing, even if complaints are forthcoming, to stand between the military and his fellow scientists, to face a Wraith-worshipper with a gun in his face to protect a friend, and pump his arm off trying to breathe for Elizabeth. So go enjoy the glory that is Sholio in all the suspenseful and deep characterization might that defines her work.

Story Summary: A scientific mission gone wrong leaves the Daedalus stranded on an ice planet with Atlantis's top scientists and a ruthless saboteur. Will rescue come before injuries and the elements take their toll?

Why This Must Be Read: I know Caldwell isn't a popular character but I've always liked him. Sucker for a man in uniform, I guess. You might become fond of him too after reading this sweet short story in which Caldwell, and by extension, the US Air Force and Marine Corps, unbends and takes in Ronon as one of his (and their) own with a lovely, symbolic gesture of trust and acceptance. I love the subtext in their conversation as they find some common ground as fellow career military men.

Why This Must Be Read: Unmanifest Destiny is hard to recommend without spoiling but it is a story that EVERY SGA fan must read. It is that good and powerful on the subject of our team and Sheppard as both the glue that holds them together so tightly and the sun around which they all orbit. It's one of my favorite stories in the fandom. All I can say is that it a post-"Search and Rescue" AU of the team and Teyla's new baby taking a road trip on Earth.

It's fun to see the characters in such a mundane setting and driving each other amusingly crazy with all the petty annoyances of too many people in a car for too long. John's POV is so startlingly real that I felt little chills of recognition. You may have to read it twice so that you can truly understand it and then marvel at how well it holds together once you do. It evokes such intense emotions that my sister, Bristow1941, threatened to kill me after I recommended this story to her without any warnings, so in the interest of my continued well-being I must say that it contains a small mention of a character death.

Why This Must Be Read: The team visits a distant world that is the seat of the throne of Armentarii, ruler of a five planet kingdom that has been sheltered from the Wraith by its unique location for more than 10,000 years. The throne is safeguarded by the Guardians for the one to fufill the prophecy that "Sheppard the son of Evander shall return from Terra after 10 millennia and lead his people to victory.” Evander was an Ancient who established and protected this medieval structured yet technologically advanced society before he was forced to flee to Earth. The IOA and SGC are eager to gain access to the technology and shelter from the Wraith offered and order Sheppard to cooperate with the Guardians to determine if he is Evander's heir. Sheppard must undergo various trials and develop his ATA gene-given latent mental abilities but these tests are the least of his troubles in this fabulous story.

Why This Must Be Read: Weir/Caldwell, my SGA weakness... Visiting Hours is a pre-Weir/Caldwell episode tag for "Critical Mass", Remnants its semi-sequel, a wonderful coda for the episode "The Long Goodbye". There was certainly not enough on the show about how it affected Elizabeth to having been possessed by Phebus. Or how it affected Caldwell to having been possessed by the Goa'uld. And these two stories story explore both and gives these two characters comfort in each other.

Why This Must Be Read:  The subtitle to this fic provides a more apt description than I could craft:  Four Ways Elizabeth Weir Never Fell Apart and One Way She May Have.

This is an excellent exploration of the ways in which our expedition leader deals with five of the more trying experiences she's had in Pegasus.  It's a well written piece that takes a thoughtful look at Elizabeth, probing the strength and depth of her character -- the core that exists even in weakness.
