Why This Must Be Read: The team visits a distant world that is the seat of the throne of Armentarii, ruler of a five planet kingdom that has been sheltered from the Wraith by its unique location for more than 10,000 years. The throne is safeguarded by the Guardians for the one to fufill the prophecy that "Sheppard the son of Evander shall return from Terra after 10 millennia and lead his people to victory.” Evander was an Ancient who established and protected this medieval structured yet technologically advanced society before he was forced to flee to Earth. The IOA and SGC are eager to gain access to the technology and shelter from the Wraith offered and order Sheppard to cooperate with the Guardians to determine if he is Evander's heir. Sheppard must undergo various trials and develop his ATA gene-given latent mental abilities but these tests are the least of his troubles in this fabulous story.
Explorations of why John Sheppard (or Jack O'Neill's) ATA gene's expression seems to be so much stronger than other people's and what he can do with it are a particular favorite of mine. I think this is the best story out there on this particular theme. It's fantastically written with vivid world-building, great action, many wonderful original characters (especially Zorthos, John's horse, Sophistides, Samsus and Saphides), touching team moments and great attention to detail. Despite it's length, the pacing is terrific and the tension ratchets perceptively in each chapter. This author must particularly be singled out for her deft characterizations of all the characters, especially Sheppard. She manages to capture all his quirks, bad habits and everything that makes him so heroic, down to his childhood background with horses, hatred of pomp and circumstance (especially fussy uniforms), and inability to accept praise or attention for his actions.
In book format, this would definitely be dubbed a pageturner. It abounds with quiet moments of reflection and friendship between the team members and John's bonding with the Guardians, his "uncles," is quite moving as is the portrayal of the special friendship and closeness between Sheppard and Teyla. Jack O'Neill and Caldwell also get quite a bit of attention and add much humor. I particularly love the scene that features John and Jack enjoying flying an alien craft together. You will not regret checking out this story or it's currently ongoing sequel, Evander's Heir II: Dark Mind, updated weekly (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4538790/1/Evanders_Heir_II_Dark_Mind).
