Why This Must Be Read: This is a beautiful, sweet coda to the final Ori arc, as Bra'tac and Teal'c meet again in a galaxy truly at peace. I love this for the mutual respect, the unspoken wealth of words beneath the surface, and the quiet triumph of two old men who have achieved their greatest dreams.

Never had they met this way without another battle on the near horizon. Never had they met this way in a time of peace. Never, in all their lives, had they known a time of peace..

Why This Must Be Read: I believe this fic is actually unique: an exploration of Teal'c's life in the alternate timeline of Continuum, when Baal is playing with foreknowledge and already has his eye on the young Jaffa he wants to claim as his own First Prime.

This is a great sketch of Teal'c's experiences of Baal's cold manipulations, the way the timeline keeps twisting away from reality, and the underlying Goa'uld hubris that is actually creating the potential for Baal's eventual defeat. Add great cameos by Brat'ac and Vala (complete with a perfectly sensible handwaving of that "fifty years" quote) and a perfectly in-character Teal'c, and your only regret will be that Aurora didn't make this fic any longer!

Why This Must Be Read: You probably don't think of Bra'tac as particularly funny. This story will change that. Contemporary Wushu, short and sweet, features the bout of Ronon versus Bra'tac and the very enjoyable bone dry humor of Teal'c and Teyla as they watch. The fight is evocatively written; I could visualize while reading each move and countermove as punctuated by Bra'tac's taunts. It turns out the Jaffa master can crush as easily with his words as his staff. My favorite part is probably the little throwaway lines (Rodney and John have a laugh-out loud exchange), Bra'tac as the most lovable badass of all time and the characterization of Ronon up against something he's never encountered before, someone who can best him easily.

Why This Must Be Read:

While I’ve focused mostly this month on authors who do an amazing job showing us what Daniel himself is thinking or feeling, I decided for my last rec that it was also important to show how others react to Daniel—and what they wonder about what he’s thinking or feeling.  In “Long Road Home,” Bra’tac gets to spend more time with Doctor Jackson than ever before during the mission to Kheb, and initially finds his approach to the world more than a little puzzling.  With Teal’c as occasional intermediary, Bra’tac and Daniel approach something like understanding, and sg_wonderland does an amazing job carrying all three voices with thoughtfulness and gentle humor.

Excerpt:

Dr. Jackson is even more subdued as we depart the temple. O’Neill attempted to initiate conversation but was unsuccessful. Major Carter fared no better so they have wisely given up. Teal’c merely walks silently by his side.

I deliberately slow my tread until we three are far behind, Teal’c and I flanking him on either side. Dr. Jackson finally breaks the silence. “If Jack couldn’t get me to crack, I don’t know why you two think you’ll do any better.”

I smother laughter at his stormy expression. “Dr. Jackson, in many ways, you are worse than a child. I do not hope to ‘crack’ you.”

Why This Must Be Read: Minxy offers us an intriguing glimpse of pre-series Bra'tac, as he quietly talks with the brave woman who dared to step through the Stargate, small child in tow, to seek refuge on Chulak after Cronus had her husband put to death.

Minxy lovingly invests a crucial, cryptic figure of Teal'c's past with strength of character and clear-eyed vision. Bra'tac moves through the stylized motions of convention, but Mehr'auc rejects the convenience and comfort of a marriage offer, determined to wage her own wars of honor. Their conversation is a stately dance of point and counter-point; we see the first subtle seeds of questioning planted in Bra'tac's mind, and watch the first tendrils of connection between Teal'c and Bra'tac root themselves into the future.

I love fics that give us insights into what shaped the characters we know and love. In Footsoldiers on Uneven Ground, Minxy shows us the people that Bra'tac and Teal'c were, and how they might have grown into the people we so admire. Read this one thoughtfully, and enjoy!

Why This Must Be Read: This fic has one of my favorite friendships: Bra'tac and Daniel. I love how their relationship evolved over ten years, and this lovely vignette, which steals a moment of time in Threads, is a fascinating look at how very far both of them have come.

Daniel, unsettled and uncertain, retreats to the sanctuary of his office as he grapples with his return to the mortal plane and the momentous events that have occurred in his absence. Bra'tac discovers him there, and their brief exchange touches upon faith, and the purpose of history, and the nature of truth and belief.

Its very brevity gives this ficlet its power. Read this one thoughtfully, and savor.

Bra'tac examined him closely, then placed his hand on Daniel's chest and Daniel imagined he could feel his heart thudding against his ribcage beneath the man's palm. "Believe in this. And believe in those who would stand by your side."

Why This Must Be Read: This engaging story was inspired by discussion at [livejournal.com profile] redial_the_gate over the decision to leave Drey'auc and Ry'ac behind in Bloodlines, when Hammond had specifically instructed SG-1 to bring them back to Earth. ...Okay, it was mostly  inspired by my complaint that Ry'ac was more of a plot device than a character. Do you think I'm complaining that I got Redbyrd fic out of it? :)

The story is initially about Ry'ac and his childish understanding of events, and it's a joy to read about Drey'auc's fiery determination and Ry'ac's perception of the Jaffa and the Tau'ri. But as I commented when Redbyrd first wrote this, Bra'tac shamelessly steals the limelight the moment he appears in the fic, as we get a delightful peek at the methods of the man who carefully, skillfully trained Teal'c - not just as a warrior, but as the leader of the rebellion.

First Lessons is nice backstory in a missing scene, written with Redbyrd's usual attention to detail and canon. And it's got great Bra'tac, being awesome as usual. What more could you want?

Why This Must Be Read: Teal'c goes home after a glorious battle in Apophis' name.

Too many people forget that Teal'c carries the burden of decades of personal history in the service of Apophis. In Pale Battalions, Beatrice Otter gives us a younger Teal'c, going through the motions – not quite ready to rebel, but all too aware that something is wrong.

There's bleakness contrasted by the easy convictions of those around him, and the hollowness of victory and reward when flashbacks of death still haunt him. This isn't the Teal'c we know, not yet – but this is the man who will become that Teal'c, and it's marvelous to catch a glimpse of the stirring of doubt and disillusion.

This story was remixed into the incredible None But Ourselves by [livejournal.com profile] cofax7, which carries the painful thread of this forward to SG-1's time. But Pale Battalions is a weighty, thoughtful piece in its own right: a Teal'c who wonders, and watches, but still goes through the motions. Read this one and savor.
