Why This Must Be Read: This story's about Atlantis having seceded and being fully integrated into Pegasus, and an institution of higher learning. Mira wrote a lot of stories in this "cut off or seceded" category, some a lot sadder or angstier, but, written for the "happyfic challenge", this is one of the most uncomplicatedly happy ones. John and Rodney are older, in an established relationship, and welcoming Madison as a new cadet from Earth come to study at Atlantis Schola. It's a feel-good favourite of mine, and a great read.

Teal'c requests Daniel's help with a situation that has arisen on the new Jaffa homeworld, and the ensuing off-world adventure highlights both Teal'c and Daniel's individual skills and the mutual trust and respect between them. As well, the nature of the problem and the original characters are both interesting and engaging.

Why This Must Be Read: I'll admit to a slight bias since [livejournal.com profile] bluflamingo wrote this using my prompt, "Ronon/Keller, last chance to be wild." For readers with an instinctive dislike of partner betrayal, let me assure you that this is not a fic about cheating. It's much more about... hmm. Emotional overcommitment. It's about the complicated web of relationships between Ronon and Jennifer and Rodney and everyone else living in Atlantis. I might even use the word "incestuous" to describe them, because they are, in a way, family, but without the clearly defined roles of traditional families (like husband and wife).

It's an angsty, sensuous little fic that gives you a snapshot of how the Atlantis team has grown and changed in the year since "Enemy At The Gate", and the glimpse I got was fascinating.

Why This Must Be Read:

Here is a story that contains my two favorite things: history and language, with a highly original narrative and beautiful writing.

The story is set far into the future and the people, their customs and their language are so foreign, it took me several reads to truly appreciate all the small nuances and to recognize the fragments of history that the main character Adamne-So refers to.

The despair of Sheppard and McKay, who are thrown into a time and a world they do not belong to and Adamne's curiosity and wonder at these two strangers who have walked right out of myth, are beautifully interwoven.

Why This Must Be Read: In the aftermath of Janet's death, Cassie isn't exactly willing to tamely follow the bright and shining path that others have mapped out of her. Stubborn and angry, she goes her own way... until that way proves nearly disastrous. It takes Sam's unquestioning love and support, a quiet and honest conversation with Jack (with Thor for company), and the memory of an exchange with Teal'c to lead Cassie to a new decision and a new vocation. Her final, unexpected choice is a moving tribute to her past, a promise for a better future, and absolutely right.

I knew, of course, that I could have gone anywhere and done anything. People were constantly telling me that the world was my oyster, although I never really understood what that meant. Daniel tried explaining it to me once, but I got lost in the anthropological meaning of the phrase's origin. Teal'c set me straight, sort of. "It means the world is yours to explore, Cassandra Fraiser." And, while I got that, I still didn't understand the connection to slimy and disgusting shellfish. Perhaps there are some things one non-Earthling should never try to explain to another.

Why This Must Be Read:

One of the 2008 Big Bang entries, this story starts out with a jolt: Earth is gone without a warning. The survivors, including three Asgard vessels, have to pull together to keep each other safe and sane. Luckily, they have the assistance of the Pegasus natives they'd managed to ally with before it all ended...or began.

The story is filled with details of how day-to-day living is managed with an emphasis on the team's support of each other. John and Rodney's relationship develops into an even deeper friendship and then more. Along the way, their care for each other is heartwarming in a bleak future. Add in the ongoing struggle against the Wraith with a bold plan for battle, and you have the recipe for a wonderfully satisfying long read with the happy ending I'm always looking for.

Why This Must Be Read: Earth is gone, Atlantis is alone and damaged (both the city and it's inhabitants) in Pegasus facing an enemy probably more horrifying than the wraith, and Rodney's in charge after what's left of his team goes missing on a mission.  The author describes this as an ensemble piece, which it is, but i'm reccing it for this category because it's a realistic "What if Rodney ran Atlantis?" fic that shows us Rodney evolve into a leader that those left on Atlantis trust and follow before he (or we) even realize it.  The slash is there, but definitely not the forefront of the story - it's more about comfort in the face of some pretty horrible circumstances, no pwp here.  Sardonicsmiley's fics are kind of ubiquitous on this site, but I hadn't seen this one posted in the community, and this is one of my favorite Rodney fics on the interwebs - kind of heartbreaking, but ultimately hopeful in the end.

I very much like that Paian chose to archive these two together, for the sheer poignancy of the sharp contrast of what Jonas and Hammond face. Once Jonas walked away from Kelowna in Meridian, he never really had a home again; and in the bright and gentle future that Paian lovingly paints for George, he enjoys home in every sense of the word, in both his family and his choices.

Paian offers wincing angst with the first set and then alleviates it with sweet hope in the second. In both cases, you'll find yourself enjoying every word.

Why This Must Be Read: My law school's semester end comes alarmingly early in the year so I currently feel the need for comfort fic to cope with my beyond stressful finals. I always turn to one of the more beloved genres in the John/Teyla pairing, that of the angsty but ultimately happy-ending plot of John and/or Teyla struggling with what they believe to be unrequited and team-destroying feelings for the other until they learn the other feels the same, leading to commitment/marriage. I get especially excited when an author manages to deal realistically with what happens in a relationship after those initial moments, which even Jane Austen never managed to move beyond.

I recently rediscovered this gem and remembered just how much I loved it. Scenes From An Intergalactic Marriage was quite deservedly nominated for a 2008 Isis award. It stands out as one of the best and most charming of the genre. Another of my favorites is Wedjatqi's Making a House a Home, previously recommended, to which I return to again and again. live_brave manages here to make a rather tired story convention feel fresh and emotionally vibrant. The tone is wryly funny and true. The trick is all in the writing rather than the events of the story, which follows the couple over the course of many years in Atlantis. The two's chemistry is combustible and tangible. The writer deftly and thoughtfully handles the issues that arise from John's awkwardness and emotional repression, Teyla's tendency towards inscrutability, the cultural clash of two galaxies (which play out in surprising ways), and living where you work on a forward operating base in an active war zone. The little details of the characterizations are pitch-perfect and gave me little thrills of recognition. Best of all, the author manages the rare feat of genuinely suspenseful and laugh-out-loud hilarious moments in less than 4600 words.

(There is also a sequel by [livejournal.com profile] harret_spy - the original is entirely gen unless you wish to read more into it; the sequel is John/Teyla.)

Why This Must Be Read: This is a future AU that branches off canon at "Adrift". In this reality, John and Rodney's fight over Elizabeth's nanites widened into a permanent rift and then an uncrossable chasm when Atlantis was lost and the gate closed forever. With his life shattered, Rodney turns his back on the Stargate program and builds a life for himself on Earth -- but then John Sheppard, the person he never wants to see again, turns up on his doorstep with a desperate problem: the retrovirus from "Conversion" is affecting him again, and this time there is no Pegasus Galaxy for a miracle cure. Rapidly running out of options, John turns to Rodney despite their estrangement in the hopes that Rodney can, one more time, pull off the impossible.

I rec'd this awhile back in the John/Rodney friendship category, but it's also a wonderful h/c story that deserves to be rec'd again -- there's h/c galore, both emotional and physical, as John's deterioration begins to strip down his layers of emotional armor and lay bare his deep trust and affection for Rodney, buried under years of anger and pain. Their friendship may be shattered on the surface, but the rock-solid roots underneath it go too deep to be destroyed, and your heart will break for them both as they slowly begin to understand what they've lost and to recognize the possibility that it can be rebuilt.

The original story is complete in itself (I feel) but there is a sequel that continues the events of this 'verse and gives some closure to open plot threads in the original story.

Summary: Even after twenty years, Rodney still has no idea how to raise children.

Why This Must Be Read

There are many wonderful kidfics starring Rodney as the clueless, but determined, father who manages to give his children the emotional support that he lacked as a child. This is not one of them. Instead, My Father Before Me brings you face to face with a clueless Rodney who raised two children on his own while hauling around some very heavy emotional baggage. Despite the best of intentions, Rodney's relationship with his son, Patrick, can only be termed emotionally crippled. The story takes place during a rare visit from Patrick.  Rodney was hoping for a peaceful visit, but Patrick brings news that burst wide open the closet into which Rodney had stuffed all his baggage. Accusations, both voiced and not, are brandied about and some heart breaking truths are revealed. But as the saying goes, the truth will set you free

Telleer has written a  very human story full of emotional turmoil, confusion and frustration. I cried buckets during the "family game" scene. But the aspect that lingered with me the most was the age old struggle between parent and child - how do you protect a child from the very characteristics that makes him his father's child? History repeats itself and apparently so does genetics.

Why This Must Be Read: Annerb treats us to a delightful, thoughtful character study of two of the strongest women in the SGC universe: Samantha Carter and Sha're of Abydos.

The AU setting, with a Sha're that survived FIAD, takes place some time in the future, in which the SGC program has gone public and SG-1 is too famous for their own comfort. Against the magnificent backdrop of a moutain cabin (sadly, not Jack's - they're too well known for that), Sha're and Sam hike to Alma's Peak and consider the paths they've taken... and how to meet the challenges of their future and the losses it might hold.

I have a not-so-secret adoration for good quality authors who recognize that Sha're is a product of a different culture, and uses those differences to celebrate her personality instead of attempting to reshape her to fit Western values. Annerb does a magnificent job of showing us, through Sam's modern POV, Sha're's strength of will, her understanding of the universe, and the cool reflection of a woman who has gone through fire, survived - and triumphed.

The View From Up Here is lovely story, with impeccable characterization for both Sam and Sha're and a lovely touch of teamy goodness on the side. Read this one and savor.

Why This Must Be Read:

Cloned Jack is an opportunity to explore who Jack O’Neill might have been without the continuing stresses of military life, and catspaw does it brilliantly.  Even if you’re not a J/D fan, if you are willing to scroll through one agonizingly emotional thumper of a sex scene to get to the heart of the matter, you will not be disappointed.   Clone Jack comes across Daniel sometime in the future, when Daniel’s been sidelined by injury and his friendship with General O’Neill is more ashes than embers.   He sees a chance to change things for the better, as he has been trying to do in many aspects of his life—a number of which have been influenced by knowing Daniel.  If the combination of sweet, sly, and bitter doesn’t get you in the main portion, hang on for the cameo from the General in the epilogue.

Excerpt:

"Anyway, like I said - means to an end. You're looking at the proud owner of Aske Air Freight - 'Need to move it? Aske for service'." Jack cocked his head to one side as he finished speaking with a quizzical lift of one eyebrow, mouth folding into a small, sly smile, and Daniel frowned, getting the feeling that he was waiting for something.

"Ask?"

"With an 'e'."

Daniel's brow slowly cleared. "Cute. The first man created by the Asgard."

"I knew you'd get it. Nobody else does."

This story is set post season 8 of Stargate SG1 and continues on as though seasons nine and ten never happened.
