Why This Must Be Read: I know, I can hear you now.  You don't want to read something that is going to break your heart into a thousand little shards of glass.  Sometimes, however, the stories that hurt us like that do so because we know in our hearts this is how things really would have played out.  Sometimes, it hurts so good. 

Some might say this isn't really a McKay/Sheppard pairing, but I think it is.

I don't normally like Death fics but this was touching and full of angst and regret. I love the sequal too.

Not normally my thing either, but this story is beautifully written and one that I think has been under-appreciated in fandom. I can see where someone might argue that this is not *technically* a McKay/Sheppard story--but it is for me. I think it comes as close to canon as possible while still representing McKay/Sheppard as a pairing.

Of course it's McShep, they still remain close friends regardless of the the relationship Rodney has with Jennifer, and Jennifer knows just exactly how close they are. John and Rodney are still together, they are just not romantically together.

Yay, glad to see you're reccing! I'm so impressed you're doing this while having the awful collywobbles....

I agree, The Last Word is an awesome story. It was so awesome it ripped my heart out & stomped on it with hob-nailed horseshoes when I read it, & I've never been able to re-read it. It even took me >6 months to read the sequel, & that wiped the floor with me too. I admire & have recced this story to others but I'm too much of a wimp ever to read it again.

I know what you mean. There are quite a few of the fandom greats I haven't read for that reason--but there's a reason why they are considered the fandom greats!

I'm glad I read this story though--and more than once. It's one of those stories that leaves a mark, but it's a mark I can live with. :-)

I keep coming back to this story and it breaks my heart every time. It just feels so damn realistic, I can see this happening. And that makes me so sad.

Yes, and for me the realism is part of the appeal. The fact that this is probably how things would have played out makes it all the more heartbreaking. *pets you on the shoulder*

It does. I keep seeing Sheppard on the balcony in EATG, with Rodney and Jennifer off to one side.
