Why This Must Be Read: I know, I can hear you now. You don't want to read something that is going to break your heart into a thousand little shards of glass. Sometimes, however, the stories that hurt us like that do so because we know in our hearts this is how things really would have played out. Sometimes, it hurts so good.
Some might say this isn't really a McKay/Sheppard pairing, but I think it is.

It was so awesome it ripped my heart out & stomped on it with hob-nailed horseshoes when I read it, & I've never been able to re-read it. It even took me >6 months to read the sequel, & that wiped the floor with me too. I admire & have recced this story to others but I'm too much of a wimp ever to read it again.
