Sha're. Amaunet. Dreams and the blurring of lines. Bleakly good.

In their dreams, Amaunet conjured feasts of strange fruits and bodies on the ground nearby. Sha’re supplemented the table with fresh breads and wrapped chocolate. She sat at one end of the conjured table dressed how she would have in Abydos, and across from her was her double, eyes glowing, and dressed in the garb of a system lord.

Why This Must Be Read: This is a delightful peek at Abydos in the pre-movie days, full of imagery and humor and perfect characterization. It's impossible not to be charmed by this... and to smile, too, at the introduction of a character-of-sorts who will definitely play a major part in the movie!

She stamped her feet to be sure the sandals held firm. "Go on, then," she whispered. Careful not to wake anyone who might hear. "What have you found?"

Skaara grinned at her and took off running, and Sha'uri rushed after him.

Great characterization and superbly uneasy undercurrents leave the reader with the sobering thought that consequences and trade-offs always exist... and that really, our own SG-1 universe is a pretty good one, after all.

Why This Must Be Read: This is a haunting glimpse of life on Abydos during the year of peace that Sha'uri and Daniel had before the Stargate reopened. There is love and humor and satisfaction... and the first trickling of unease, with that last line more ominous than Sha'uri or Daniel can ever know.

I adore stories set on Abydos, and this one is more evocative than most. It's the beginning of the end, or the end of the beginning -- either way, it's well worth reading!

Bra’tac felt a smile tug at his lips. “Come, kinswoman,” he said, wrapping his arm around her waist. “If your husband’s people have taught me anything, it is of the value of never letting your step falter, no matter how steep the terrain.”

Why This Must Be Read: Nightspear concludes one of my all-time favorite AUs with the fifth in the series, Journeys, covering the events in her Daniel of Abydos universe from mid-S5 through mid-S7.

Daniel of Abydos originally began as a kind of kidfic (and nonetheless made me fell in love with it!), but by the time this final novel begins, Daniel is already an adult and a full-fledged member of SG-1. Still, his relative youth and the changes in this Au's backstory means that Revanna, Kelowna, Abyss, Changeling, Full Circle, Orpheus, and other canon incidents happen very differently, with a fascinating exploration of the challenges of Ascension and the limitations and rules that Daniel has to face. ("Tell Jacob to stop" will break your heart, trust me.) Some die who lived in canon; others live who died.

I love Nyan's brave attempt to take Daniel's place on SG-1, and the twist of Jonas earning his position partially by virtue of being untainted by guilt. I love the way Nightspear wove the mythology of the later seasons into Daniel's version of S6 and made it work. I love her Abydos and its people, and the courage and determination they continue to show. But most of all, I enjoy Nightspear's loving attention to detail, her craft at characterization, and the wonderful way she depicts these characters who are just a little different from the SG-1 we know and love, but are delightfully, perfectly themselves.

Why This Must Be Read: I should save this until I rec the Sha're category again, but this story is so fantastic I can't wait!

Instead of "THANKS. SEND MORE" the tissue box reads, "PLEASE. SEND HELP." - because Amaunet came through the Stargate looking for a host for Apophis, and took Daniel. Sha're joins the SGC, and the story twists and turns to reflect her cultural upbringing, her connections with her teammates, and the differences she brings to SG-1.

You will love every bit of this, and one certain chapter will break your heart. This is real, this is powerful, and this is good.

This missing scene from "Children of the Gods" is brilliantly original. As Dira commented, "Because, dammit, that kidnapped and murdered Air Force sergeant deserved a name." Author's summary: The colonization of desire.

Why This Must Be Read:

Today and tomorrow morning in the Daniel Jackson category, two AU fics. In this one, it wasn't Skaara and Sha're who were captured by Apophis; it was Skaara and Daniel. Apophis took Daniel for a new host, and Sha're joined SG-1.

This fic is remarkable not just for its brutal psychological honesty and the brilliance of its flip-one-critical-element premise but for its development and follow-through. In another writer's hands, this story might have been a tearful angstfest, heartachey but ultimately shallow. In Tafkar's hands, the narrative digs deeply and painfully under the skin, reaching down into the viscera of the psyche to show how it adapts in order to survive -- and how it learns to hide pieces of itself, from saviors as well as from abusers.

Most awful and appropriate of all is that it's Daniel -- in so many ways the heart and soul of the Stargate story. Which makes the fic one of the most effective and affecting nightmare inversions of canon that I've ever read. It's like an X-ray film on a lightboard in a pitch-dark room, illuminating the bones of the character with a cold glare that hurts the eyes. The development of Sha're into an experienced gate-team operative is a triumphal recasting and redirection that twists the knife even more deeply. An outstanding, unforgettable fic.

About 8000 words. Pay attention to the warnings.

Author's summary: She had bound him. Tethered his life to her own.

Why This Must Be Read:

Today in the Daniel Jackson category, it's two fics where Daniel is seen through others' eyes. This one is a strikingly lovely look at Daniel through Sha'uri's eyes, seventeen days after Kasuf sent her in "to appease the emissary of the gods" -- when they are still sweetly new to each other, but so many of Daniel's most defining characteristics are already charmingly and forebodingly evident.

The fic draws a vivid picture of Abydos, with lush sensory detail and the suggestion of far cities, intimations of how much more world there is beyond the settlement near the gate that has become Daniel's home. Descriptions of weather and terrain, significant objects, imagery and symbolism and thematic conceits resonate with each other and wind around each other, echoing the binding that Sha'uri's sympathetic magic tries to cinch tight. But the beauty has a bitter bite of foreknowledge -- ours and that of the augur in the fic and, beautifully and sadly to her credit, Sha'uri's. This is the Daniel who will never stop digging in the sand to reach beyond the sky, the Daniel whose curiosity and restlessness will shake the galaxy, and Sha'uri already senses what it will cost her. Tragedy is as far off, now, as those far cities, and as implicitly present, part of the warp and woof of their otherwise peaceful, happy lives.

1807 words.

On Abydos, Daniel had a father-in-law that meddled and gave him unwanted advice about his sex life, a brother-in-law that sometimes drank too much, passed out in their tent, and didn't bother to apologize in the morning, and a wife who stole the blankets.

I love stories that give us Sha're's culture and background, and Rigel paints a lush, lovely picture of her beliefs, her fears, and her determination. There are hints and portents of the future, aching imagery, her acceptance of Daniel's nature and her careful efforts to guide those instincts towards life and contentedness. Metaphorical and literal threads of sky and sand and water, all woven together for a story of beautiful, thoughtful melancholy.

Why This Must Be Read: Annerb treats us to a delightful, thoughtful character study of two of the strongest women in the SGC universe: Samantha Carter and Sha're of Abydos.

The AU setting, with a Sha're that survived FIAD, takes place some time in the future, in which the SGC program has gone public and SG-1 is too famous for their own comfort. Against the magnificent backdrop of a moutain cabin (sadly, not Jack's - they're too well known for that), Sha're and Sam hike to Alma's Peak and consider the paths they've taken... and how to meet the challenges of their future and the losses it might hold.

I have a not-so-secret adoration for good quality authors who recognize that Sha're is a product of a different culture, and uses those differences to celebrate her personality instead of attempting to reshape her to fit Western values. Annerb does a magnificent job of showing us, through Sam's modern POV, Sha're's strength of will, her understanding of the universe, and the cool reflection of a woman who has gone through fire, survived - and triumphed.

The View From Up Here is lovely story, with impeccable characterization for both Sam and Sha're and a lovely touch of teamy goodness on the side. Read this one and savor.

Why This Must Be Read: So few authors even try to write Sha're, and even fewer manage to get her right. She is no timid, shrinking violet, but she is also most emphatically not a modern Western feminist! She is a product of her own culture and values and a fiercely independent spirit, and it takes talent to do this amazing woman justice.

Beatrice Otter breathes her to life in her Determination series with incredible power and delicacy, giving us a Sha're who is uniquely herself and utterly perfect.

In this AU, it was Daniel and Skaara who were abducted by Apophis, and it is Sha're who comes to Earth and goes to Chulak with the rest of SG-1 in an effort to get her people back. Beatrice treats us to a woman who watches, and waits, and learns; who navigates the foreign ways of Earth and the SGC with wisdom and caution, using patience and just a touch of guile. We see her careful meeting with General Hammond, her dealings with Sam and Walter and Siler, and her powerful confrontation with Teal'c, which pays tribute to the worldview of both and the strength of the woman who inspired the rebellion on Abydos.

Determination is a WIP of sorts, in that each ficlet stands on its own, yet is part of a greater whole that offers great promise for more. Go read these, and urge Beatrice to continue this marvelous AU!

Full disclaimer: Beatrice started this fascinating AU at my own prompt. I am awed with what she's done and I can't wait to see what happens next.

Why This Must Be Read:

Fig Newton takes some of the most defining moments in the early relationship between Daniel and Teal’c and, within the frame of the end of FIAD, walks us movingly and mercilessly through a set of what-ifs and if-onlys. What if Teal’c had chosen to betray Apophis on Abydos instead of Chulak? What if Daniel had refused to destroy the Hammer? In a maze of dreams and almost-memories, an unconscious Daniel and a meditating Teal’c test the idea that the universe is unfolding as it should. I'd excerpt it for you, but like an epic poem, there's no way to do it justice. Just go read it.
