Why This Must Be Read: This is a delightful peek at Abydos in the pre-movie days, full of imagery and humor and perfect characterization. Every older sister (and, yes, younger brother) will recognize the dynamic between Sha'uri and Skaara. It's impossible not to be charmed by this... and to smile, too, at the introduction of a character-of-sorts who will definitely play a major part in the movie!

She stamped her feet to be sure the sandals held firm. "Go on, then," she whispered. Careful not to wake anyone who might hear. "What have you found?"

Skaara grinned at her and took off running, and Sha'uri rushed after him.

Why This Must Be Read: Nightspear concludes one of my all-time favorite AUs with the fifth in the series, Journeys, covering the events in her Daniel of Abydos universe from mid-S5 through mid-S7.

Daniel of Abydos originally began as a kind of kidfic (and nonetheless made me fell in love with it!), but by the time this final novel begins, Daniel is already an adult and a full-fledged member of SG-1. Still, his relative youth and the changes in this Au's backstory means that Revanna, Kelowna, Abyss, Changeling, Full Circle, Orpheus, and other canon incidents happen very differently, with a fascinating exploration of the challenges of Ascension and the limitations and rules that Daniel has to face. ("Tell Jacob to stop" will break your heart, trust me.) Some die who lived in canon; others live who died.

I love Nyan's brave attempt to take Daniel's place on SG-1, and the twist of Jonas earning his position partially by virtue of being untainted by guilt. I love the way Nightspear wove the mythology of the later seasons into Daniel's version of S6 and made it work. I love her Abydos and its people, and the courage and determination they continue to show. But most of all, I enjoy Nightspear's loving attention to detail, her craft at characterization, and the wonderful way she depicts these characters who are just a little different from the SG-1 we know and love, but are delightfully, perfectly themselves.

Why This Must Be Read: Have you ever had a series of novels that you wanted to make people sit down and read? Daniel of Abydos is mine.

Translations and Diplomacy gave us a 14-year-old Daniel who was raised on Abydos and came to Earth when his parents (who opened the Stargate in '82) were killed and his "brother and sister," Skaara and Sha'uri, are taken by Apophis. What follows is a long, lovingly detailed, intricate, fascinating AU, where a teenaged Daniel tries to find his way on Earth... and maybe, just maybe, become part of the SGC - and, when he's old enough, a member of SG-1.

When Brotherhood opens, Daniel is already 16 and has been agitating to join an SG team for over two years. There's a lot of reluctance, both from Jack and Hammond, at the idea putting a teenager at risk - Daniel's previous scheduled trips through the Gate have either been directly to Abydos or to thoroughly vetted safe planets. Can Daniel convince them to let him be part of SG-1?

The friendships between Jack and Daniel, and Teal'c and Daniel, will amaze and delight you. Robert Rothman comes to brilliant, vibrant life. Hammond is awesome beyond belief. The AU versions of Seth, of Legacy, of The Devil You Know, of Pretense mixed with FIAD - they are all beautifully realized, realistically different, and with honest repercussions. Crystal Skull twists fantastically, as Jack (who is more protective of this younger Daniel) ends up getting zapped instead. And trust me when I say that Nightspear's version of Shades of Grey will absolutely break your heart.

This AU series is one of my all-time favorites. Even if (like me) you don't like kidfic, run to read this. And if you do enjoy a younger Daniel... well, what are you waiting for? :)

Why This Must Be Read: Daniel has accomplished the mighty feat of bringing down Ra, the greatest of the System Lords.

And he's about to discover that being a husband is a lot more complicated. :)

I love Abydos stories. I adore Sha'uri. I'm pretty fond of Skaara, too. So is it any wonder that I find this ficlet to be an absolute delight?

Bonus! Pepper included two ficlets in a single entry, and the second one is an hilarious team fic that is sure to leave you snickering.

Skaara gave him a bright, approving grin, and took his arm. "Daniel God-Killer," he said, "My brother. You are a great hero, and a great scholar. On my world, you will learn to be a great husband."

Why This Must Be Read: Sweet, charming, and michievious, this ficlet offers us a fascinating snippet of life on Abydos. As lovely as it is to glimpse some cultural backstory, though, it's even more delightful to have a Sha're that is so perfectly in character, treating her clueless husband as a very human being!

Too short to excerpt - this is a quick, fun read. Enjoy this one for the satisfaction of knowing that Daniel surely had wonderful days on Abydos like this... and then join me in wishing for more Sha're stories from Emily!

Why This Must Be Read: Daniel, Skaara, Abydos, and moonshine. What more do you need?

How about lush and loving prose that evokes scents and sights and tastes to put you right there in the story with Daniel? Perhaps it's the gentle weaving of past events with current ones, as Daniel's mind wanders to other occasions involving alcohol. Or, most of all, Rigel's enchanting portrayal of Abydos, in which she creates the rich and vibrant society that embraced Daniel as one of its own.

This story is a treat. Read it slowly, and savor.

Why This Must Be Read:
There are a number of stories in SG-1 fandom which postulate different possible ways Daniel could have descended after season six, and I think this is one of the best. A freak accident leaves Jack, Sam and Teal'c temporarily stranded on a planet. In town that night, while seeking refuge from a storm and medical treatment for Sam, they come across a man who claims to be called "Arjun" but looks impossibly familiar.

Tripoli creates an intricate, detailed world and involved backstory about the Ascended Ancients and their interaction with mortals as the team desperately tries to convince Arjun that he is actually their long-lost teammate. The clash of personalities, tide of hidden memory, and careful revelations are so well done and so realized that by the end you almost aren't sure if you want Daniel to return. It's a long story, but well worth the read, and it's Friday, so you have a weekend coming up anyway.

Why This Must Be Read: I have been waiting for a long time for the opportunity to rec this delightful Abydos story! Set some time between the movie and COTG, this charming fic gives us beautiful snapshots into life on Abydos – the freedom from Ra’s tyranny that impoverished them for so long, the eagerness of the Abydon people to have Daniel teach them of their lost heritage, the humor of Daniel’s not-so-successful attempts to follow the culture’s traditions. It’s written with deftness and warmth and love, and it will make you fall in love with Abydos – and Daniel! – all over again.

Campfire Stories

Why This Must Be Read: "Daniel was aware of the power of remembrance to shape a community."

This fic has a little bit of everything that I enjoy about Stargate – history, and the making of mythology, and friendship, and continuity. In some places it's so lyrical and beautiful that it hurts, and in some places it's so aching and poignant that it hurts. But I love every bit of it.

Campfire Stories arcs across the history of Stargate – from its very beginnings in the movie until sometime in S7 – from the point of view of the people of Abydos, as they relate the tales of Danyel and O'Neill and the Goa'uld as they perceive them. We see their customs, and how their lives and stories are shaped by the events of Stargate: The Movie, COTG, Secrets, FIAD, Pretence... and finally, heartbreakingly, how Daniel creates his own ritual in the seventh season, remembering Abydos when there's nothing tangible left to touch.

If you love Abydos, and cherish the memory of Earth's first victory against the Goa'uld, then this story is unquestionably for you.
