Why This Must Be Read: Rigel captures the beauty and richness of Abydos in this haunting fic, as Sha'uri contemplates her Danyel and wonders if she can keep him tethered to the sands of reality.

I love stories that give us Sha're's culture and background, and Rigel paints a lush, lovely picture of her beliefs, her fears, and her determination. There are hints and portents of the future, aching imagery, her acceptance of Daniel's nature and her careful efforts to guide those instincts towards life and contentedness. Metaphorical and literal threads of sky and sand and water, all woven together for a story of beautiful, thoughtful melancholy.

Read Rigel's fic slowly, and with the care it deserves - and just try not to shiver, at the end.

He had said he was not a god, this man she had wed. But Skaara had shown her fire blossoming in his hand and tubes that spat death with a deafening roar. The suq was full of pointed murmurings; these things were surely from the world beyond. And who could deny that he had set the sky afire with a great power as he defeated Ra?

And yet…

She had seen him bleed.

She had touched it to her lips and tasted the metal and salt there, bringing the waking dreams that refused to be pushed away.

In her mind's eye, she had been hidden from him. He was standing before water that was ruffled by an unseen wind, surrounded by the blazing light of the midday sun. He had turned back, smiling and then fell into it.

This is one of my favorite stories ever. I can't believe that it wasn't recc'ed before now! I just love Rigel's writing - each and every time.

Well, I've thought about that, but the fact is that most of the stories that I've read have either already been recc'ed, or are recc'ed as fast as they come out (often by yourself ; ) If I had a broader range of Genre interests, but there's not really all that much Gen that you don't pick up on, I don't think!
