malayneseahawk wrote Ignoti Nulla Cupido, in which Daniel visits an AU that seems perfect. But this superb remix shows that the grass truly isn't greener, even if might appear that way to the outside observer.

Great characterization and superbly uneasy undercurrents leave the reader with the sobering thought that consequences and trade-offs always exist... and that really, our own SG-1 universe is a pretty good one, after all.

This is Jack in the year between the movie and "Children of the Gods", coming back to the wreckage of his life to find that Abydos changed everything and nothing.

And Sara, who still loves him enough to try to help him, even as she's smart and strong enough to find the distance from him that she needs to survive, before he drags her down with him like a drowning swimmer.

This is an excellent character study, and a grown-up story in the best possible sense, mature and painful and rich.

Why This Must Be Read:

A Sara O'Neill fic for the Jack/Daniel shippers that works so very well. Komos starts with a Jack and Daniel in an established, though very not public, relationship, puts Daniel in Jack's house while Jack shops for groceries, and has Sara ring the doorbell. What follows is not a comical, soap opera-esque flair up but instead a strange, wonderful triangle between three adults who have all known loss and who all care about each other and can perhaps read each other a little too well.

The Sara Komos gives us is strong in her uncertainty, still held by the past but also able to move on and she accepts Jack and Daniel as they are much easier than she might. That she gives us all this from Daniel's perspective only makes the story more powerful.

Near the end of "Cold Lazarus" Jack tells Sara he wants to "hear all about it" but we never know in canon whether he ever had that conversation with her.

dknightshade gives us Sara after that episode, confused and hurting and looking for answers and understanding her ex-husband well enough to know she's likely to never get them.

In this short fic we can feel what they had between them - the deep understanding - and mourn for all they've both lost, as well as for how alone Sara feels, and how much Charlie's death still hurts. We also see her understanding of Jack - of the way he pushes people away and the way he punishes himself.

Nomad gives us a Sara O'Neill ten years after the death of her son, moving to Washington DC to get a fresh start on her life, and, of course, running into a Jack O'Neill recently promoted and transferred there. The ghost of Charlie is strong between them, and yet enough in the past for them to have scarred over the wound and be able to move on.

Nomad writes a fantastic meeting between the two, with surprise and palpable emotion. You can feel their history, their pain, and their hope and you can feel how much they truly loved each other. This story is very real and very worth the read.

In "Heart of Glass" Pepper takes us back to the beginning when Jack and Sara first met. She gives us an entirely believable scene that is cute and sweet and awkward in the way of two people who've only just met and find themselves flirting. Pepper gives us a young Jack - not yet beaten down by the world and a wonderful Sara who you can see becoming the woman Jack loved.

And, because this is Jack and Sara, whose relationship is only slightly less tragic than Daniel and Sha're's, Pepper finishes it up with a swift kick in the gut.

This short, lovely fic, is well worth the read.
