Author's Summary: Even off the field, Jack thinks it's nice to know somebody's got your back.

Why This Must Be Read:

Sometimes, you need friends who just understand. Jack finds that -- first with Kawalski and Feretti, and then with the other Colonels in Stargate Command. Colonels are high enough up the food chain that there aren't as many of them and, as team leads, there are pressures that only someone else in the same position will understand.

The group changes over the years, but the bar they have found has become both a refuge and a shrine to their successes and losses.

Folk in the military often look to each other as friend and family. This is a lovely story of how some of that family helps itself.

Why This Must Be Read: Written by a fellow Aussie, this fic explores the alternate universe proposed in the season 1 episode 'There But for the Grace of God.' There's a strong focus on the developing romantic relationship between Jack and Sam, but it also touches on the unusual pairing of Janet and Kawalsky. The fic flirts with a few other first season episodes including 'Children of the Gods' and 'The Broca Divide.' I hate to play favourites, but this fic stands out for me - I've read it two or three times. I think the story and characters are well developed and executed. Without spoiling the ending for those who haven't read it, there's two choices depending on your personal preferences. If you're a Jack/Sam shipper (or just a connoisseur of good fanfiction), this one will hit the right buttons - just keep a box of tissues handy, because it's heavy on the angst! The author also weaves in a few new characters, including the loveable Leslie, who fit perfectly into the universe.

In a way, 'Meet you on the Other Side' has elements of the 'Pride and Prejudice' about it (particularly in the first few chapters), but I choose to view the "borrowing" of familiar themes endearing - and I hope you do too! Happy reading!

Why This Must Be Read: I love good outsider perspective, when we know more than the character. In this superb portrayal of Sergeant David A. Zucker, working at Area 51, we get an alternate view of the opening scene of... well, Point of View. And it's just fantastic.

Why This Must Be Read: This is a hugely entertaining exploration of a reality where the Langford expedition discovers the quantum mirror rather than the Stargate. Bill Lee, General West, and the team that went through the Stargate in the movie (minus Jack and Daniel) are the only players we can recognize; but you'll fall in love with the original characters pretty quickly - especially Dr. Alicia Tremont, who is fabulous. Enjoy the in-character humor, the camaraderie, the intelligence of the players, and the nods to realities that are more familiar to us. A fantastic, absorbing read!

Why This Must Be Read: I love a well thought out and executed AU. Magickmoons takes geeky!Sam from Moebius and runs with her, creating a delightful AU where the ring is discovered in Antarctica, and Jack and General Hammond are tasked with bringing together the right people to solve the mystery of the Stargate. Geeky!Sam's confidence blossoms once she is away from her abusive soon-to-be-ex fiance and her smarmy, pompous manager. And just like in every AU/timeline we've seen on-screen, there's some undeniable attraction between Sam and Jack, and Magickmoons builds the romance slow and sweet. Great characterization for everyone, especially for Jack who is competent and not at all as dumb as he likes to pretend.

Why This Must Be Read: This fic is filled with warmth and friendship and bittersweet humor, as new friends join Jack in saluting an old friend he's lost. Complete with snark, increasing drunkenness, and a constant refrain of "Shut up, Daniel," (in the nicest possible way, natch), Sid does sparkling credit to Jack, Kawalsky, and all of SG-1.

Why This Must Be Read: It's a Redbyrd episode fix story! What more do you need to know?

This wonderful, wonderfully long fic has only just become available online, a year after it was published in Fragments. It starts with Charlie Kawalsky's POV in, well, POV, as he discovers exactly how essential Daniel Jackson has been to the success of "our" universe. The story follows Kawalsky through his parts of the episode, then turns its back on the quantum mirror to focus on what happens next, as Kawalsky lobbies to find "their" Daniel Jackson and make him a part of the SGA.

Redbyrd does a really wonderful job of extrapolating the differences between the mirror-POV universe and our own. From the moment we meet Daniel in Cairo to his unceremonious arrival at the SGA in handcuffs to the slow creation of this universe's version of a new SG-1, we're met with different choices and different paths that all seem eminently reasonable. Dr. Carter the civilian would hardly join her husband on SG-1, so Redbyrd gives us the canonical also-ran. The SGC would surely have given the SGA some essential mission reports, so we get to see Tonane's people and their "spirits" approached in the right way - although apparently, nothing can ever go right on Shyla's planet, even if you're forewarned against sarcophagi. In a really fascinating twist, the events of one particular late season 3 episode are paralleled at more or less the same timeframe... but with enough differences to leave the reader not quite sure of what's really happening.

One of my favorite aspects of the story is Redbyrd's deft explanations of how the SGA managed to get as far as it did. I'm not sure if the "only three SG teams" is show canon or Redbyrd fanon (there are some nice cameos in here from other Redbyrd stories, too), but we get a clear picture of how the mirror universe stumbled through the gate without Daniel to show them how to get there. We really are the lucky ones, getting Daniel from right at the beginning, aren't we?

Make sure you've got lots of time to read this one. And while you're at Redbyrd's webpage, check out her other newly released zine fic: Shades of Oannes, for an interesting twist on the usual post-Fire and Water angst.

Why This Must Be Read: This is only a short fnafic from Janet's point of view during... well, Point Of View. It isn't a very usual or popular pairing and it isn't a very usual point of view, as Janet stories are still rare. But it caputues her thoughts very nicely and very believably. A great read.

Why This Must Be Read:
This is an older story, but a charming one. Set pre-series, it was a word-of-the-month fic for 'Incorrigible'- an entirely appropriate adjective for Jack, particularly in his younger, more carefree days. Humorous, bittersweet and well-written; check it out- you won't regret it.

Note that I had to search this out at web.archive.org- if anyone knows of a current site or archive location, please let me know and I'll update the link.
