Why This Must Be Read: Fire and Water is one of my favorite episodes. This reads like a novelization of Daniel’s POV, trapped in the underwater lab, for the first half and then there’s a lot of lovely team reunion feelings that we didn’t get to see in the episode as everyone tries to get back to equilibrium.

Why This Must Be Read:  This story was recc’d April 16/06 by [livejournal.com profile] meeshy. I have found an additional location where it is archived, so I am reposting this wonderful story. It is a timeless piece which can be read as friendship or a pre-slash. More importantly, the characters and their responses to the invasion of Sam’s body by the Entity are believable. It makes up for the abrupt ending to that episode.

Why This Must Be Read:

A first-person missing scene from Ripple Effect, as told by Sam from the reality we know best. It opens with her trying to deal with the Room Full of Alternate Carters™ and ultimately needing to escape the chaos to her lab, where she runs into another person from of the Ripple Effect realities.

One of my fandom-peeves is the creation of alternate realities without a plausible diversion point - it happens too often, both in fic and the show. Eventhorizon7 gives us an outline of a believable diversion point without boring readers with an extensive (and unnecessary) narrative backstory.

There's a sequel to Ripples from the Heart called Correct Application of Pressure, although I have to say that I really enjoy the hopeful but still unresolved ending of the first fic as the conclusion to the story.

Why This Must Be Read:

'Interference' gives us back some of the year of Daniel's life that we missed, for which I will be forever grateful. It shows us how he worked around the rules of the Ascended where he could, and chafed at them, until his growing anger will let him do so no more. Eventually, he has to interfere openly, and we see the events of 'Full Circle' from Daniel's point of view. There's lots more to this story in four parts than I have mentioned here, but I'll leave those things for you to discover. Enjoy!

Why This Must Be Read: This is a lovely, rich story set during the time Sam is stuck in "The Road Not Taken". Stranded far from home, and surrounded by people she doesn't know whether or not to trust, Sam is able to grab a brief refuge with the one person as becky puts in the fic "she can still help."

Becky marries the bleak view of the "Road Not Taken" world with a lightness of finding comfort in the every day moments. Her characterization of Sam in this bizarre setting is very natural. And the interaction between Sam and a Cameron embittered by his situation are mixed with highs of light banter to the strong undercurrent that forges a connection between them, no matter what universe they're from.

Plus, there's macaroons.

Why This Must Be Read:

It's a very interesting look into Sam's head while she escapes in Foothold. She's competent and determined without being "Super-Sam". And the story illuminates the friendship between her and Teal'c beautifully - without him being present even.

And it answers the question why she contacts Maybourne so believable that it made it into my personal canon.

Why This Must Be Read:

This is a well-written, cute little missing scene for Bounty (10.15) wherein Vala and Daniel get in a quick conversation between Odai Ventrell's defeat by SG-1 and the clean up that must be done. As with the show, it's more the moments between these two that say so much about their real relationship than any words spoken out loud, and Lisa has captured this perfectly.

Why This Must Be Read: There are many kinds of hurt, and many kinds of comfort. The episode raised some questions that it never answered; Aurora Novarum gives satisfying explanations for what happened, with her usual attention to detail. "After the Battle" makes sense of why Daniel says he wishes he'd shot Adria, and it also shows us how the rest of the team, plus Bra'tac, cope with "the events of this surreal day."

Warning: Het, Spoilers for Season Six ep Prophecy
Author on LJ: Not Known
Author's Website: Jonas Fic
Link: Prophecy's Burden

Why This Must Be Read:

Besides the fact that this is probably my all-time favorite Jonas fic? *g* Well it is. I make no delusions about the popularity of this character. But in all honesty, if it weren't for Jonas Quinn, I would not be watching Stargate SG-1. So when an author as talented as Drea writes a beautiful fic about him, I want to pay it homage. I was going to use this fic as my finale, but I didn't want to wait any longer to share it.

The story takes place during the Season Six episode Prophecy. It's more a missing scene than anything else. Jonas is overwhelmed with guilt about the accident that happens to Sam. He blames himself for the fact that she almost died and when he goes to check on her, he's shown nothing but compassion and understanding. Sam reiterates the sentiment of the episode that Jonas has worth to SG-1 not because of his abilities to 'see' the future, but because he himself is important. As it turns out, he's extremely important to her.

There's a rawness in the scene when Jonas is finally able to open up to her and they share a moment of complete honesty. There's no barriers between them. He is able to share his emotions without being judged. I just can't say enough good things about this fic. It's Jonas/Sam, my favorite pairing. I really, really like Sam with him, and this story is simply wonderful in showing that special relationship they have.

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] redbyrd_sgfic
Author's Website: http://www.mindspring.com/~redbyrd/index.htm

Link to Story: 1969 Prime

Why this should be read:

This is another "oldie but goodie". I went looking for it after discussing the chicken and the egg dichotomy of "1969" with a friend, and got enraptured by the tale all over again. (Aside: Found it by searching here and finding it in another category--d'oh! I'd forgotten redbyrd had penned it, bonus!).

Basically the story explores and answers a niggling time travel theory paradox of the episode. At one point, there had to have been an initial timeline where George Hammond would not have known to leave himself a note. This is that first 1969. Redbyrd repeats an occasional moment or two from the episode, but this is different timeline, so the context can be very different. It's a nice blending of canon and what could be/should be canon.

All the characters' voices are expertly depicted, including a young but very confused officer and gentleman, Lt. George Hammond. As I state in the warning, this is not the SG-1 version that's successful in getting home, and they are in a sense "our" team, so tissue warning, but please muddle through the sadness.

Redbyrd continues George's tale through the decades in wonderful glimpses of backstory until we meet our team. Every step of the way, the details are plausibly explained, but it's not a physics text, it's a fantastic story!

Read it! If you already have, reread it. It's great. And if you still can't get enough, read the prequel of the initial timeline's Stargate program history, Prime Minus 1 too!

Why this should be read:

A short fic, but rich in characterization, it's Sam's first look at Vala as they prep for the mission in "Beachhead". [livejournal.com profile] cofax7 touches on the common back story of these two different characters in a thought provoking way. In fact, I like to think of this missing scene as a piece of canon that somehow got lost in the cutting room floor.

My favorite aspect of this fic is it makes Sam sound very "human", it's a side of Sam we don't often see when she's busy playing with naquadah, saving the world, and/or "blowing up suns".
