Author's Summary: Even off the field, Jack thinks it's nice to know somebody's got your back.

Why This Must Be Read:

Sometimes, you need friends who just understand. Jack finds that -- first with Kawalski and Feretti, and then with the other Colonels in Stargate Command. Colonels are high enough up the food chain that there aren't as many of them and, as team leads, there are pressures that only someone else in the same position will understand.

The group changes over the years, but the bar they have found has become both a refuge and a shrine to their successes and losses.

Folk in the military often look to each other as friend and family. This is a lovely story of how some of that family helps itself.

Why This Must Be Read: This is a hugely entertaining exploration of a reality where the Langford expedition discovers the quantum mirror rather than the Stargate. Bill Lee, General West, and the team that went through the Stargate in the movie (minus Jack and Daniel) are the only players we can recognize; but you'll fall in love with the original characters pretty quickly - especially Dr. Alicia Tremont, who is fabulous. Enjoy the in-character humor, the camaraderie, the intelligence of the players, and the nods to realities that are more familiar to us. A fantastic, absorbing read!

Why This Must Be Read: I've recced a bunch of long, plotty angst-filled stories this month, so for my last August rec I thought I'd go with something short and funny. Technically, Redbyrd wrote Training Exercises as the sequel to Preformance Reviews, but together they read as a two-part story which is why I'm lumping them together.

These stories are a tag to "Prometheus Bound", showing a version of what could've happened to the group after they got back to the SGC. Would Jack have been happy after hearing they'd lost the Prometheus to Vala? Nope, probably not. The first part is a delightful snippet of Jack and Daniel banter seen through the eyes of Colonel Reynolds in the briefing room as well as an explanation of their 'punishment'. The second part is amusing and creative and you sort of can't help feeling sorry for the poor recruits that got saddled with Daniel and SG-3 as their training partners.

Why This Must Be Read: I love a well thought out and executed AU. Magickmoons takes geeky!Sam from Moebius and runs with her, creating a delightful AU where the ring is discovered in Antarctica, and Jack and General Hammond are tasked with bringing together the right people to solve the mystery of the Stargate. Geeky!Sam's confidence blossoms once she is away from her abusive soon-to-be-ex fiance and her smarmy, pompous manager. And just like in every AU/timeline we've seen on-screen, there's some undeniable attraction between Sam and Jack, and Magickmoons builds the romance slow and sweet. Great characterization for everyone, especially for Jack who is competent and not at all as dumb as he likes to pretend.

Hammond felt that dying on a long weekend was really not to be encouraged.

Author's summary: SG-1 and other SGC members get in situations where they follow a Jack O'Neill philosophy –- bitch and eat cake.

Why This Must Be Read: In a series of ten short fics spanning Seasons 1 through 9, Aurora showcases Jack's most Jack-like qualities by showing the effects of his influence on the people around him. Sometimes he's physically in the scene, sometimes he's referred to or he sends a note, but he's present in every moment of this, from Ferretti thinking twice about eating the 'special' cake to Teal'c trying the 'going wacko' thing in the time loop, from Griff giving guff to enemy Jaffa to Carter confronting her new command, from descended Daniel discovering how he still fits in with his team to Mitchell finding out why knee problems kind of go with the job. Each fic is an entertaining, insightful gem, and the reflected aspects of Jack are focused beautifully in the last one, which is from the point of view of Jack himself -- and lets him have the last word.

A wonderful portrait-in-mosaic. Plus, there's cake! Lots and lots of cake. :-)

About 10,300 words total.

Why This Must Be Read: My usual humor preferences involve fics where the characters behave perfectly normally (well, as normal as SG-1 ever is) but are faced with bizarre circumstances. This fic is very, very different, with various fan favorites acting completely OOC…

And yet I love it anyway.

That’s probably because of Hammond, who is delightfully in character throughout. On the day after Halloween, he faces down the most incredible group of shame-faced people, including SG-1, Bra’tac, Jacob Carter, Thor, and an Ascended Daniel, scolding them for their inappropriate behavior. (The role Jack plays with Thor is scarily appropriate.) Then you get to the final line, and discover the little twist that shows that George Hammond is always, always solidly in control.

It’s short and silly and fluffy and it will make you giggle. Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it?

Why This Must Be Read:
This is an older story, but a charming one. Set pre-series, it was a word-of-the-month fic for 'Incorrigible'- an entirely appropriate adjective for Jack, particularly in his younger, more carefree days. Humorous, bittersweet and well-written; check it out- you won't regret it.

Note that I had to search this out at web.archive.org- if anyone knows of a current site or archive location, please let me know and I'll update the link.
