Why This Must Be Read: This is a genuinely charming bit of SGC fluffiness, all from Walter's perspective (and how often do we get that?) - exactly who and what is responsible for the increasingly elaborate graffiti that is decorating the SGC walls?

There's banter and snark and friendship here, all from Walter's wry POV, and this is a real pleasure to read.

Outside the gym was an amusing image of Teal’c dressed up as a Jedi battling Darth Vader, complete with an exploding Death Star in the background.

Author's Summary:

Jack has just rescued Daniel from an uninhabited planet and all is well. Or is it? If Sam and the others don’t know something is very, very wrong—they do when Daniel and Jack disappear. Not even the best investigators in the world can find them.

Set post season 10.

Why This Must Be Read:

A poetic, haunting fic related to the author's own treatment for PTSD. Jack and Daniel return from a mission gone awry, but they are different. Sam fights to understand, and learns more about team also being family.

This is part 1 of a series but it can stand alone. Part 2 is currently being posted.

Nothing really ever goes right, does it? But Teal'c has disappeared and it's up to Sam and Daniel to figure out what happened, as Jack watches from the mountain.

And as he wonders what color nail polish might be on Sam's toes.

The SGC acquires a library, and life goes on as it does. Extra bonus truly lovely Daniel and Vala friendship scene!

Outside, the SGC was a hub of activity. The galaxy spun on, in all it's chaos and wonder. But inside this one small room in the SGC, a library seeded in grief and grown with care, all was quiet and there was peace.

Why This Must Be Read: Walter perspective is such a rare treat! Here is Walter the Chevron Guy, watching the Quantum Mirror rather than the Stargate, and... waiting. His thoughts on various team members, and how Hammond interacts with all them, is fantastic.

This is sad and somber and somehow lonely, but that element of stubborn hope leaves you believing that there just might be a happy ending after all.

Why This Must Be Read: I just rediscovered this fic and had forgotten how truly fabulous it is.

So, truly fabulous that it had been rec'd five years previously by Fig Newton (I hope it's not too soon to rec it again):

"Walter's friendship with Sam takes center stage in this delightful story, but there are so many delicious undercurrents in this: SGC loyalty to one another (go General Hammond!), wonderful team dynamics, and solid friendships. I love Walter's perspective on Sam, on the team, and the way the SGC works. A real treasure that makes you appreciate that Walter is so much more than just the Chevron Guy!"

For me though, the joy is Sam's drive to look after her team and somehow scooping Walter into that team. And although the story is mostly Sam & Walter, it's all about The Team.

There is so much here: Sam and Daniel in an unusual Wonder Twins mode, Teal'c with his experience and weight of history, Hammond's determination to protect his people despite themselves, and competence from just about everyone, which is something I always love!

This will grip you and absorb you, and leave a lingering knowledge that the SGC will never really understand everything that they encounter through the Stargate.

Why This Must Be Read: This is a simply fabulous character sketch of Dr. Brightman, bringing her vividly and wonderfully to life. Thothmes extrapolates from the little we see of her onscreen and makes her an integral part of the SGC infirmary -- not replacing Janet, but complementing her with her own bedside manner. Medical personnel need to be a team, too, and here, we see Dr. Brightman as a major player. Add sprinklings of humor and cameos from Walter and Siler for a wonderful read!

If Dr. Fraiser, all 5'2" of her, was fire, then Allison Brightman, a tall 5'8", was ice. Ask any trained nurse, and he or she will tell you that there is a time to apply one, and a time to apply the other.

Why This Must Be Read: A thoughtful exploration of the many contradictions that make up Walter the Chevron Guy: the pragmatist, the idealist, the optimist. I love the way that each of these offers insights, yet meshes together into a coherent whole.

Like every other member of the SGC, he keeps a gun tucked under the striped socks and neatly folded boxers. There have been too many close calls, too many chances for them not to be prepared, to be ready. He hasn’t had to use it yet, but he never goes to sleep at night- or day- without checking it to make sure it’s loaded.

"Everyone here must be alert and ready for anything to happen," he said, portentously. "Anything. At any moment, there could be an event that threatens the safety of our entire world." There was a slight pause, in which they both seemed to be waiting for an apocalypse. There was a distinct lack of apocalypsii. "Any moment," reiterated Walter, firmly. "We just don't know when."

Why This Must Be Read: Sid treats us to no less than eight delightful Five Things here!

Five things Daniel would go back in time to fix (the deaths, Kelowna, the Ori). A fabulous character study of Jack, and five jobs he had as a teenager that taught him priceless values he would apply to his leadership of SG-1. The ways the team has changed over the years, and the one crucial thing that never has changed (and never will). Oma and Daniel, with all of Oma's very human quirks of personality. Five times Sam got to be girly for a change (because doesn't she deserve it?). Five very unusual tags that Walter uses in the course of what only passes for "everyday' expenditures at the SGC. Five generals, from West all the way through Landry, who nearly quit - with George Hammond's as my personal favorite. And for a last hilarious list, five memos Jack really, really should have read, before Daniel got homicidal!

These range from angsty to wistful to funny to thoughtful, and I love every one of them! I'm sure you will, too. :)

Why This Must Be Read: I’ve listed an unusual number of categories here, because Fives is actually three different “Five Things” – all gen, and all wonderful!

The first set explains how Siler and Walter accidently save the world – whether it’s absentmindedly turning off the lights or giving aliens an unexpectedly helpful sugar rush. The second is a fascinating outsider’s look at the SGC, as Teyla observes different characters on Earth (I was most moved by her impressions of Daniel, although Teal’c came in a close second and Sam and Felger made me grin). The third is a fascinating, eerie exploration of AUs – events that occurred on the show that Sam wishes she could have changed… and the creepy reality of what might have happened if she’d acted differently.

Like all “Five Things” ficlets, Fives is a quick read; but you’ll find yourself remembering them for a long time to come.

When Your Job Description (You Announce Chevrons!) Is a Total Lie

Why This Must Be Read: While this hilarious fic is set in Martha Wilson’s marvelous Retrograde universe, you don’t have to be familiar with Retrograde to appreciate this fantastic story!

General O’Neill sends a hapless Walter on a grand shopping expedition on behalf of Atlantis. He covers all the aisles, from children’s underwear to Playstations to condoms. There’s glee over bargains, an attempted hi-jacking, and an embarrassment factor that is largely mitigated by Teal’c’s unflappable, looming presence at his side.

We get some great cameos by Jack and Daniel, but this fic is really all Walter’s, with a fantastic Teal’c along for the ride. And by the time the story ends, you’ll be laughing out loud at Madelyn’s talent for writing what ought to be a crack!fic, but isn’t – because everyone is perfectly in character.

Why This Must Be Read: I'm not much of a fan of the last two seasons of SG-1; to date, I've only made a single post-S8 rec, and that one heavily featured Jack. But just to show that I can be fair about things, here are two fic snippets for the price of one, both featuring the Ori storyline and both wonderful snapshots of characterization and friendship.

The first is apocafic, featuring Landry – who I would actually like, onscreen, if he even vaguely resembled the guy in this snippet – and Walter. (Who doesn't love Walter?) It's bleak and beautiful and heart-wrenching, and it's a silent tribute to the characters we love.

And then there's the second, which picks up on a single throwaway line in S10 – "Langara fell" – and runs with it. Even non-S6 fans like me were frustrated and felt that Jonas deserved better than just a passing, unemotional remark from Sam. This snippet rectifies that in a beautifully satisfying and teamy moment.

If you like the newer seasons of SG-1, you'll love this. And if you don't care for it much, like me, try these snippets anyway. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised!

Why This Must Be Read: So many insane things happen in the SGC on a routine basis. So when General Jack O'Neill discovers that he's turned into a puppet, the only question is, "What next" – and, possibly, "What did Daniel touch this time?"

This seriously funny story gives us Jack in his office, wondering not only how this has happened and how his former teammates will react, but whether or not his loose eyebrow is going to come off completely. Daniel's reaction to the situation is my personal favorite, but the real charm of the story comes with Walter's appearance on the scene – when the fic suddenly veers from deadpan humor and hilarious characterization into sweet poignancy, as Jack gets the kind of reassurance that no one is really in a position to give.

Being "The Man" wasn't easy on Jack. In Tallulah Rasa's delightful story, we see both the stress and the acceptance… and end up laughing, too!
