Why This Must Be Read: Way back when, Pettygrew was (hopefully still is, somewhere?) one of those authors whose stories never failed to please. 'Protocols' is one of those: a classic Jack and Daniel conversation, set early in Season 8 just as Jack is trying to reconcile himself to his new role as the head honcho. The wry humour, characterisations, and dialogue are perfect -- a real treat.

Jack has entirely too much fun being invisible. Nothing too skeevy, just fun!

Great Jack voice, delicious humor, and bonus deadpan Siler for the win!

Why This Must Be Read: This is Siler at his absolute deadpan best, armed with a wrench and a straight face as he deals with a temporarily 10-year-old Major Carter who still cherishes her motorcycle. Kidfic fan or no, you will adore this little fic. :)

"That's an order, Siler."

"Yes, sir," Siler says, because he never questions the Colonel's orders, even when being saddled with a ten year old Major Samantha Carter, who is all pigtails, freckles, and a toothy smile.

Why This Must Be Read: This is a delightful contemplation of Jack O'Neill by one Sergeant Siler, culminating with exactly what Siler left Jack in his will.

It's wry and deadpan and realistic - just like Siler himself. A joy to read!

As far as Sgt. Siler was concerned, officers were like the weather, hard to predict with any accuracy, beyond the ordinary person's control, and capable of greatly affecting the tenor of a working man's day. And like the weather, most of the activity they generated was made way up high where the air was thin, and fell alike on the just and the unjust down below. His personal approach in dealing with all this was to try to keep his head down and keep going, regardless. What can't be changed must be endured, and in general, it wasn't worth having too much of an opinion about the weather.

Why This Must Be Read: Twelve short ficlets about the team and other characters, unexpectedly waylaid by routine matters on Earth that trigger powerful reactions to anyone involved with the Stargate. My favorite ones are Bill's and Walter's (excerpted below), but these are all so powerful: the recognition that once you know what's out there, even the most mundane events can never be quite the same.

Why This Must Be Read: Here's a fun little romp as Sam and Siler end up taking an unscheduled trip through the Gate and need to sneak into a Jaffa barracks to find their way home. Add an adorable epilogue with Siler and Walter, and this story is guaranteed to leave you grinning!

Why This Must Be Read: This is a simply fabulous character sketch of Dr. Brightman, bringing her vividly and wonderfully to life. Thothmes extrapolates from the little we see of her onscreen and makes her an integral part of the SGC infirmary -- not replacing Janet, but complementing her with her own bedside manner. Medical personnel need to be a team, too, and here, we see Dr. Brightman as a major player. Add sprinklings of humor and cameos from Walter and Siler for a wonderful read!

If Dr. Fraiser, all 5'2" of her, was fire, then Allison Brightman, a tall 5'8", was ice. Ask any trained nurse, and he or she will tell you that there is a time to apply one, and a time to apply the other.

Why This Must Be Read:
This was one of the first SG-1 stories I read, and it still makes me smile whenever I think of it. One night at a bar, set to prove SG-1's overwhelming coolness once and for all, Jack bets Makepeace that SG-1 can beat SG-3 in a hockey game. Only later does he realize that while SG-3 has a team of Marines who move effortlessly on the ice, Jack has a Jaffa who is very good at hitting the puck hard anywhere but at the net, a physicist who spends too long calculating the precise angle and velocity necessary for her shots, and an archaeologist who has never been on skates before.

With Siler helping them in goal and a late-in-the-game strategy on how to use Daniel's flailing clumsiness, can SG-1 pull it together or will they have to turn in their "overwhelming coolness" badges? Put down any water (because I guarantee a laugh) and enjoy the game.

Link: Fives

Why This Must Be Read: I’ve listed an unusual number of categories here, because Fives is actually three different “Five Things” – all gen, and all wonderful!

The first set explains how Siler and Walter accidently save the world – whether it’s absentmindedly turning off the lights or giving aliens an unexpectedly helpful sugar rush. The second is a fascinating outsider’s look at the SGC, as Teyla observes different characters on Earth (I was most moved by her impressions of Daniel, although Teal’c came in a close second and Sam and Felger made me grin). The third is a fascinating, eerie exploration of AUs – events that occurred on the show that Sam wishes she could have changed… and the creepy reality of what might have happened if she’d acted differently.

Like all “Five Things” ficlets, Fives is a quick read; but you’ll find yourself remembering them for a long time to come.

Why this must be read?

General Jack and Sgt. Siler are doing inventory just before Christmas when unexpectedly they get their bodies switched thanks to Ma’chello’s return of the body snatchers machine. It's a good read with both men learning a great deal about each other and more importantly themselves when the men agree to swap places so Siler's kids can have Daddy home for Christmas..

Why you should read it. It's a rather unique view on Saint Sparky, the much abused, and oft electrocuted Fixer of the Gate. But what if his accidentproneness was really an act?

He was good at fixing things computers and electronics. Of course, his current bosses would be shocked to learn that he had worked with Franklin, Edison, Bell, Marconi, Babbage, and Ford. Well, maybe they wouldn't be to surprised . . . .this was the SGC. Even so don't want them figuring it out, he decided as he tried to decide where to put the bandage this week. Maybe it was time to pull out the sling again?
