Author's Summary:
An alien truth-telling device, an empty lab at 2 AM, and two people who've spent years not saying what they really think.
What could possibly go wrong?
(Spoiler: Everything. And also nothing. It's complicated.)
Why This Must Be Read:
A fun work where, as the summary says, an alien device makes Jack and Sam say what they've been thinking for a long time.
And, oh, the pining! It's subtle and nicely done.
"With all due respect, sir, have you completely lost your mind?"
Colonel Jack O'Neill looked up from where he'd been examining the alien artifact with all the scientific rigor of a man poking roadkill with a stick. Which, Sam noted with exasperation, was literally what he was doing.
He'd found a retractable pointer somewhere - probably from one of Daniel's presentations, the archaeologist would be looking for it tomorrow - and was currently extending it toward the crystalline object sitting on her lab table.
"Carter, you've been staring at this thing for …" he checked his watch, tilting it away from the harsh lab lighting, " …sixteen hours. I'm pretty sure at this point, poking it can't make things worse."
Sam pressed her fingertips to her temples, a gesture born of exhaustion rather than necessity. Her hands needed something to do that wasn't reaching for another cup of coffee or rubbing her tired eyes. "Sir, we have no idea what this device does. It could be a weapon. It could be a power source. It could be …"
"A paperweight?" Jack interrupted, his tone all innocence.
