Author’s summary: John wants to try something. Rodney has issues.
Why This Must Be Read: This is one of the gorgeous fics by the amazing WonkyElk, who surprises me every time with the humorous lightness and emotional depth of her writing, and with the intense feelings she’s able to evoke. John’s thoughts about Rodney, and how tender he is with him right from the beginning, feel as if Rodney were his most beloved crystal glass plane—beautiful and fragile, and everything his dreams were made of. WonkyElk describes so sensitively how they get to the heart of the problem: slow and insightful, and with so much love and understanding for each other that it almost hurts! Reading this beautiful fic is almost overwhelming, so wonderful, and such an incomparable experience that you won’t want to miss a single thing!
It was obvious that this had struck a nerve. You didn’t even need to look at Rodney to gauge his feelings, you could feel them in his movements, his breathing pattern, the emotions that radiated out from him and filled the room.
That was what had struck John first about Rodney; the way that he filled the room entirely, took it over and made it his own, even in exalted company. Loathe him or love him - and it was hard not to do one or the other - you couldn’t escape the man’s sheer presence.
John liked to exercise his options; play the leader when he needed or wanted to; efface himself at will. Rodney had no choice. He just existed louder, and more obviously, than anybody else.
“It’s… it’s nothing, it’s ridiculous.”
Rodney had that look to him, when he was trying to pretend that he wasn’t bothered by the inevitable ridicule; a look which John knew better than he should, because he’d caused it a time or two himself.
John pulled Rodney in a little closer and gave him a reassuring squeeze.
“I promise I won’t laugh.”
John ran through all the possibilities he could think of - some unfortunate experience with a girlfriend; discovering his parents in the act and never being able to shake the images; being startled and confused as a child, by a suggestive vegetable - and braced himself to be sympathetic and understanding, no matter what.
Rodney closed his eyes briefly, set his shoulders and went for it.
