Author’s summary: John was an elite bodyguard, willing to lay his life on the line in the pursuit of protecting someone whose life was in danger. Then, something happened. And he quit, left his entire life behind to choose early retirement. Now, years later, an old friend has come to ask for his help–a friend of hers is in danger, though he refuses to acknowledge it, and John is her last, best, hope of keeping one Dr. Rodney McKay safe and alive. John reluctantly agrees, as a favor to an old friend, but in the back of his mind, he’s still wondering if he can do this. If he’s lost his edge. It starts off easily enough but then things start slowly escalating. When he starts to fall for the client, when danger hits close to home and memories resurface, can John still do what he’s been trained to do, keep Rodney safe, and protect his heart?

Why This Must Be Read: This compelling story immediately draws you in. It’s an amazing, wonderfully created AU that conveys all their personalities so well and throws them into danger, emergencies, and the expected emotional fallout. Dragonwing really knows how to create suspense and entertainment. Reading their fic is like watching a great movie. And it’s so fun to see how they integrate John and Rodney’s banter, as well as the different characters and their peculiar traits. Every word is a joy to read—every moment and every emotion is so captivating, believable, and in character. And with the whole Atlantis team coming into play, all of this makes you keep forgetting it’s an AU. It’s so good, so exciting, and so familiar! Simply a must-read!

He blurted out, “How much would it take for you to walk away?”

John raised an eyebrow.

Rodney added, “I can double what she’s paying you.”

“She’s not,” John replied, then amended, “Paying me, that is. I’m doing this as a favor.”

Rodney looked away and muttered a curse under his breath, which had the unfortunate benefit of making John chuckle softly. Great, a favor. Which basically meant there was no getting rid of him that way. But Rodney had plenty of experience now with what buttons to push to get someone like him to decide Rodney was too much trouble and quit. “Fine,” Rodney said, then stepped forward.

John watched him approach without moving anything other than that rather expressive eyebrow.

Rodney stopped a foot away and waved a finger at him. “Rule #1: don’t touch anything. And I mean, anything. I work with some very sensitive and dangerous materials and I don’t have time to answer questions about science from some jock who thinks it’s cool to mess with my microscope. Or rush you to the ICU because you touched the wrong isotope. Understood?”

A change came over John. He pushed away from the wall and straightened, shifting on his feet so that his chest brushed Rodney’s fingertip. Huh, some part of Rodney’s brain noted, they were the same height. Suddenly, the lighthearted guy had disappeared and this new version had an air of intimidation to it. A shiver slid down Rodney’s back as John held his gaze, his own hazel eyes dark and intense, and answered evenly, “Understood. Now here’s my rule #1. If I tell you to do something, you do it. Immediately, and with no questions asked. Understood?”

Rodney’s eyes narrowed. So that was how it was going to be, was it? Fine. At least this one would be interesting during his short tenure here. “Understood. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have some actual work to be doing.” And he brushed past John and into his lab, ignoring the curious looks from his colleagues and interns to return to his computer.

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Sheppard drift back into the room and meander through the lab before coming to a stop next to him. Gritting his teeth, Rodney huffed a breath and turned to the side. “Yes?” Rodney demanded impatiently.

Leaning his hip against the edge of the table, Sheppard asked, “So, about that lab accident last week that Liz thinks—”

“Oh god. Look, I know what Elizabeth thinks, but she’s wrong,” he interjected, rolling his eyes. “What actually happened was what inevitably happens in a science lab. It was nothing so nefarious, simply my lab assistants misjudging the PH level of their concoction which then had an unfortunate result that required us to evacuate and call the fire department. No one was injured and we were back the same day, though hopefully my lab assistants have learned from their mistake since they are supposed to know better than that,” Rodney added in a louder voice.

Sheppard raised an eyebrow—he did that a lot, Rodney thought absently—and twisted to look over at Rodney’s three lab assistants. Soon to be two, however, if Lee couldn’t keep up with Miko and Simpson. Curious despite himself, Rodney leaned to the side to see past Sheppard and hid a knowing smile. All of them were very studiously working or writing results in their notebooks—all being quite obvious about not paying attention to him.

Returning to the problem facing him, Rodney straightened and said, “Look, I’m quite busy, so if you intend to stay, might I suggest you locate a place out of the way and wait until I’m ready to leave?”

Sheppard’s hazel eyes studied him for a long minute then he shrugged. “Okay.” He walked away, snagging a chair as he went, and took up position against the wall nearby.

Rodney turned back to his computer, scowling, though he could feel Sheppard’s gaze on him. It didn’t matter what he said or did, Rodney reminded himself, because he wasn’t going to stay long. Rodney was going to make sure of it.
