Why This Must Be Read: As Victoria Custer, LtLJ wrote higher-rated fics, and I'm especially fond of this one. There's some amnesia trope involved as John loses his memories and is partly transformed into an elf-like alien when he stumbles on a forgotten Ancient device off-world. In his new form he becomes the tribe's leader, with adventures fighting giant creatures in a huge alien forest, hunting, and sex with the lead female and the rest of the tribe. I love how fully John takes to this simpler, more free life. But as with all amnesia fics, he has to return to reality in the end, and his team and colleagues are desperate to retrieve him. A great mix of action/adventure, worldbuilding, uninhibited fun, and the bittersweetness of having to resume his responsibilities again.

It wasn't until the next morning that he understood that by leader, they actually meant leader, as in telling them what to do. "We just met," he had pointed out, baffled. "You don't know me at all."

"Males as big and strong as you are rare now," Iyelle had explained, rubbing her cheek against his chest. "I had to claim you for us before anyone else got there."

There were things he knew that they didn't, that the spots in their skin must be sensory organs, taking in some kind of information carried in the air, or maybe in some field that the trees themselves were generating, and that his brain was interpreting it as scent and sound. That he was different from them, and not just because his skin was the wrong color and he had more body hair. That he had come from somewhere else, that he had lived with a tribe that had done other things besides look for food, sleep, and bang each other. But they all assured him that it didn't matter and they loved him anyway.
