Why This Must Be Read: Superbly crafted non-linear storytelling. Literal race against time. Technology puzzles. Amazing Sam and Daniel friendship, with extra Jack and Daniel friendship and a stunning Teal'c and Daniel scene. Intense drama and heartbreak. Add a creepy twist of an epilogue with a generous dash of horror, and you have a gripping oldskool story that will linger in your mind for a long time to come.

Why This Must Be Read: Sometimes SG-1 loses, and sometimes it's the fault of individual choices. Luckily, Daniel has Sam to help pick up the pieces afterwards.

This is bleak and bittersweet, as Sam and Daniel, with perfect characterization, face their failures and the desperate need to just keep going. It's not a happy fic, but it rings all too true and is well worth the read.


Sam is too tired to think that far ahead. When she gets back to earth she’s going to hug Cassie extra hard for the little girl she couldn’t save, and she’ll think of the grave she and Daniel covered with grass in its green and quiet clearing, and she’ll appreciate the closure it’s given her. Then she’ll get on with the fight, whatever it brings.

Why This Must Be Read: I love best the episodes when SG-1 has to grapple with difficult, shades-of-grey situations. In this heartbreaking story, Sam has to deal with a problem with an impossible solution which she nonetheless needs to make.

I love Sam's courage here, Jack's unremitting strength, Daniel's gentle support, the general competence of just about everyone, and the inevitable choice. Painfully, powerfully good.

Why This Must Be Read: This fic is gorgeous and twisty and almost lyrical as Sam struggles with alien perceptions and tries to make sense out her altered state. Fantastic Wonder Twins interaction, lovely teamy goodness bits, and Sam in all her quintissential Samness. A deep, thoughtful read that just echoes with the wonder of the Stargate, and Sam herself.


Daniel leaned forward. "One of the defining characteristics of sentience is the ability to create complex maps of signification and meaning. And these – they don't arise, fully-formed, out of the natural order of things. They're arbitrary. Inherently, the ways in which we map meaning has no meaning."

For a second, that made a horrible amount of sense. She rested her palms on her knees, tried not to let her fingers curl inward. "So I'm losing sentience."

"What?" Daniel seemed surprised. Hell if she knew. Hell if she could tell anything. "No, Sam, your perception is shifting. You said yourself, it seemed to mean something."

"It all means something," she said.

Daniel took her hand and put it within his.

Why This Must Be Read: In the wake of Crystal Skull, Sam and Daniel share a quiet conversation about Nick, the nature of Daniel's childhood, and how his experiences helped shape him into the man he would become. Sam is the perfect friend here, offering acceptance and acknowledgment rather than judgment or unwanted sympathy.

I like the way Daniel's old social service records serve as the backdrop for the slow recounting of the different foster homes he knew and his mostly-good memories of the families that raised him. The fic is more bittersweet poignancy than happy fluff, but it does feel right to me. Besides, any pre-series Daniel story that doesn't immediately leap onto the abused childhood trope is definitely worth a second read! :)

Why This Must Be Read: Fic based on musuem artifacts can't help but be entirely appropriate for Daniel, don't you think?

In these paired stories, we get Sam and Daniel comforting one another, first in the middle of a rather desperate crisis and then in dealing with the aftermath. You will love Sam and her frantic need to do something, anything, even if it's not enough; you will love Daniel and his automatic choice of coping methods, and his willingness to abandon it for Sam's sake. But most of all, you will love them both for their concern for one another and their affectionate, wonderful friendship.
