Why This Must Be Read: I almost tagged this as "original character" just because of the fish. :) (There are original characters here, too.)
This delightful, insightful story takes a few seconds from Fire and Water and uses that brief snapshot of Daniel's aquarium to create an entire series arc that begins with the acquisition of a fish called Mac at the beginning of S1 and ends after Ark of Truth with, well...
There's friendship and wry humor and thoughtful observation and heart-wrenching grief, and it's both outsider POV and Daniel POV all in one. A very satisfying and intriguing read!
Three weeks after Daniel… expires, Jack wakes from a nightmare involving Banfield, his old drill sergeant, and an army of tentacled replicators invading the Air Force Academy, and he remembers Mac. It’s a quarter to four, but he gets into his truck, still in his pajamas, and drives to Daniel’s place, blasting Black Dog, the more vicious parts of himself protesting all the way.
Why the hell is this my job anyway? Daniel, get your ass down here and take care of your fish. I never asked for this. Entitled little shit… figure you can just up and run and we’ll pick up the pieces, over and over and over again. This isn’t my goddamn job.
Mac and the crew are perfectly fine and he feels like an idiot and he pokes at Daniel’s stuff and showers in his bathroom and slams his fridge. Then, as it gets light, he consumes Daniel’s entire stash of Pringles and follows that up by breakfasting on half his freezer, and accidentally, but maybe not, breaking one of his dishes.
Two weeks later, they’re all back to close the apartment, and end up grouped around the aquarium hashing out a plan.
“I’m not taking it,” Jack preempts loudly, glaring at Mac’s vacant face.
“I’d rather not, either,” Sam adds quietly, still prone to sudden bursts of lip-biting and wide-eyed-ness.
Teal’c is quiet, only offering what he knows about the logistics of moving the tank.
In the end, they set it up in Daniel’s lab, getting a whole lotta weird looks hauling all those buckets through the SGC, but everyone’s happy with the arrangement.
Sam goes to visit them often. So does Teal’c. Sometimes they meet each other there. Sometimes they meet Jack.
