Why This Must Be Read: This is a great example of outsider POV, something rhymer likes and does really well. John!whump is another fave of the writer, as is genfic, and here we have John in dire straits off-world, trapped and dying, discovered by a local girl who stays with him as he worsens and she tries to comfort him. John skates close to death, but rhymer likes happy endings as well, even if they are hard won.
He pushed himself up with his hands, and shifted position slightly, careful not to move his trapped leg. He did it in a way that showed me that he had done the same thing many times before, desperately trying to find a tiny shred of comfort. His other leg moved, tugging at the chain attached to the dead man.
I didn't really want to look at the dead man in full sunlight, but I had always counted myself as brave. "Who is he?" I asked.
The man sank back to the ground, his breath heaving as if he had run for miles, rather than just move his upper body a few finger-widths. "Don't know," he said. "Prisoner 128. Wouldn't tell me his name. We were paired for working. I escaped, and he came as part of the deal."
