Why This Must Be Read: This delightful ficlet, with its light surface and multi-layered levels of complexity and depth, is very difficult to excerpt, because I want to quote the whole thing.

As Vala struggles with her psychology testing in Morpheus, Teal'c appears to offer her advice, as one alien to the other. The dance of dialogue that follows is fascinating, as Vala tries to fence verbally with Teal'c and discovers that for all his brevity, he always, always manages to get the last word.

Marvelous characterization, thoughtful observations, and appreciation for both Vala and Teal'c: Because You Are Also a Tortoise is an excellent character sketch that you're sure to enjoy.

Why This Must Be Read: Besides being a wonderful episode tag for Unending, it's an absolutely brilliant look at Vala's character and her friendship with Teal'c. This is Vala. Every side of her, from the broken, to the mending, to the slightly flighty and fun side of her. And Teal'c, the steady, quiet one, who manages to find a point of connection with her that most wouldn't expect (and really, the hair colours still make me smile) but fits them so perfectly and really highlights their friendship. The fic really shows how on first look Vala and Teal'c land on opposite sides of the personality spectrum, one flighty and in constant motion, the other quiet and steady, but underneath all the jokes and the pranks there is a bond, with each other, with the team.

And I strongly recommend reading

holdouttrout's Jester's Silence, because it really is the other side of this fic told in Teal'c pov and equally lovely.

Why This Must Be Read: This is a fantastic aliens bonding story, with a wonderful common frame of reference for Teal'c and Vala, and a brilliant rapport, even early in their acquaintance. These are the people who will arm-wrestle later at a briefing, who will run and hug when they find each other alive eventually, but in this story, it's two people with something in common. It's short, it's worksafe, and heartening.
