Why This Must Be Read: Here's a wonderful exploration of Daniel's mission with SG-5, right before The Light begins. It would be just a fun romp with a slight mystery if we didn't know what was coming for poor SG-5. But at least we get to know them a little, and enjoy their interactions with Daniel, before... well, before.

Marzipan does a great job of bringing SG-5 to vivid life as a good, solid SG team. Daniel's dealings with them are spot-on. Well worth the read!

Why This Must Be Read: Part of me thinks this reads so well to me because, like Sam in this story, I am an outsider to SGA trying to work it out. But most of me thinks this is simply a fantastic, gripping fic that both SGA and SG-1 fans can love!

This is early Sam-in-command-of-Atlantis, still dealing with she's-not-Elizabeth-Weir resentment from the Atlantis team. This is Sam, dealing with a mystery and bad guys with courage and brains and sheer determination. This is Sam and Teyla being awesome together and the team working flawlessly. Add some delightful SG-1 crossing over with superb characterization, and you've got a long, satsifying read that'll definitely leave you wanting more!

One final note: the author labels this as "S/J, but could be read with gen goggles." There was only a single line or two in the final paragraphs that required me to settle my gen goggles firmly on my nose to read as casual male/female friendship, but for Sam/Jack fans, consider that aspect a bonus.

Why This Must Be Read: This is the ultimate fix-it story. It starts with the apocalyptic destruction of Atlantis, but for reasons that don't need exploring at this juncture, John and Rodney get sent back many years in time, at the point of the explosion. John comes to on his wedding day to Nancy and he and Rodney meet up and get to do it all over. The trick is that they have to avoid the mistakes they made first time around without changing things so much they don't get to go to Atlantis. It's a nifty idea and well executed - a great ride with a ton of plot, even an evil conspiracy. There are some issues - it might not have been betaed as there are quite a few typos. But I'm fussy about that kind of thing and I didn't need to back-button out - the fic drew me in, despite a few rough edges. I recommend it for an engrossing read.

Why This Must Be Read: I was delighted when I recently stumbled across K Hanna Korossy's stories on AO3 - originally published in print zines, these stories are some of my favourites from early-on. This one, set in Season 2, was first published in 2002. At its inner core - wrapped in an engaging look at Teal'c's continuing acclimation to his new home - is a satisfying, warm huddle of team caring and friendship. Imo, the characterisation of Teal'c, and his 'voice', is spotless. Just wonderful.

Earth is lost to a combination of the Ori and the Trust, but Atlantis goes on, and survivors from Earth trickle in by various routes. Why This Must Be Read: We all wanted to see what happened after Osiris took over Sarah Gardner, threw Janet and Sam around, and tortured and threatened Daniel. Daniel has lost another loved-one to the Goa'uld and was attacked with the ribbon device. There is physical and emotional fallout. And Jack and Teal'c return to the SGC to find out their teammates have been in danger while they've been out fishing. This fic is one reason I love missing scenes and tags - because it's emotionally satisfying.

Snippet: Jack was already across the room squatting down next to Daniel's bed, with Teal'c close behind. Jack carefully brushed back Daniel's hair and peered closely at the ugly red burn on his forehead. "Is he okay? Looks like a ribbon device."

"Yeah, Osiris didn't much like him not telling where Isis is. I think he'll be okay, he's already better than he was yesterday. We just all need to get home," Janet said with exhaustion creeping into her voice.

"That's what we're here for," Jack stood up and turned toward the others, "Teal'c and I are here to serve. How do we go about getting this show on the road? Should we wake Daniel up?"

"You already did." Daniel struggled to raise himself up, got about a third of the way up and was in danger of flopping back. Teal'c reached down and wrapped a big hand around Daniel's upper arm to pull him gently to a sitting position. "Thanks Teal'c".

Why This Must Be Read: Written by a fellow Aussie, this fic explores the alternate universe proposed in the season 1 episode 'There But for the Grace of God.' There's a strong focus on the developing romantic relationship between Jack and Sam, but it also touches on the unusual pairing of Janet and Kawalsky. The fic flirts with a few other first season episodes including 'Children of the Gods' and 'The Broca Divide.' I hate to play favourites, but this fic stands out for me - I've read it two or three times. I think the story and characters are well developed and executed. Without spoiling the ending for those who haven't read it, there's two choices depending on your personal preferences. If you're a Jack/Sam shipper (or just a connoisseur of good fanfiction), this one will hit the right buttons - just keep a box of tissues handy, because it's heavy on the angst! The author also weaves in a few new characters, including the loveable Leslie, who fit perfectly into the universe.

In a way, 'Meet you on the Other Side' has elements of the 'Pride and Prejudice' about it (particularly in the first few chapters), but I choose to view the "borrowing" of familiar themes endearing - and I hope you do too! Happy reading!

Why This Must Be Read: This isn't a crossover or AU so much as a fusion, with the world of SG-1 melding with the world of another fandom. The fic essentially sketches the first eight years of the show, with mostly the same storylines, with one major difference: there are people who can "bend" various elements to their will, and Jack O'Neill is one of them.

I don't even know if Avatar: the Last Airbender is a live TV show, a cartoon, a novel, or a comic book. I imagine that for those who are familiar with the fandom, there are many more nuances to appreciate. But even for someone like me, who has no concept of Avatar, this was a fascinating exploration with an excellent Jack voice that I read and enjoyed in a single sitting.

Why This Must Be Read: This long story is replete with action, drama, team interaction, great world-building, and richly-written original characters. As far as action / adventure stories go, this is one of the golden-oldies of the fandom. The author's understated summary says "SG-1 visit a world where everyone has disappeared" ... but don't be fooled by the simplicity of that summary. Also don't be fooled by the apparent emphasis on Daniel in the early stages of the story - the plot involves the entire team working to do what they do best: save a world.

The author's fics have gone off-line. Her work is only available via Wayback links, so this rec hopefully serves a dual purpose: to re-introduce you to a wonderful story, and to keep Lex's fic alive for that little bit longer. I hope you enjoy it.

I've always firmly believed that if anyone is working at the SGC, they are competent and the best of the best. Felger is the exception that proves the rule. So when Marzipan portrays Dr. Mackenzie, even in the midst of Legacy, as an intelligent, competent doctor...

Here is Mackenzie: professional, dedicated, genuinely doing his best. And here is Jack and Teal'c and Sam, driven to somehow cure Daniel through sheer mental effort. And here is Daniel: trapped in hallucinations, just aware enough to know his mind is disintegrating.

Everyone is wonderful here. Everyone. Settle down and read this one with enjoyment.

In second place on the centricity scale comes one of my favourite things to read: an entertainingly portrayed 'Grumpy-Jack', with some excellent one-liners.There's questionably a wee subtle tiny hint of Sam-Jack buried under a couple of lines, but really, only for those readers who move in that direction; for me, this story is a very enjoyable Teamfic.
