Why This Must Be Read: It seems as though a lot of McKay/Weir fic takes place during The Eye.  And really, should we be surprised?  Of course not!  Rodney and Elizabeth in mutual peril!  Comforting one another!  Finding strength and courage together!  The makings of great fic.  And the basis of this great ficlet.  Wonderfully written and beautifully told.  A must read for fans of The Eye and the McWeir in the episode.

Why This Must Be Read: In the end is our beginning…

For my final rec in this category this month, I give you what will surely be anointed as an early D/V classic. This delightfully raunchy little PWP is a must-read for any Daniel/Vala fan, and is the first D/V fic I ever read. What's really remarkable about it is that it was written based only on *spoilers* for Prometheus Unbound, and still manages to nail the character of Vala extremely well. There's some cool insight into what might motivate Daniel's animal side too, and…and…okay. I'm also pretty shallow. It's really hot. :D What more do you need?

Why This Must Be Read: While this piece has a non-con encounter as one of its central elements, the real impact here is in the depiction of team dynamics. Captured by an alien who derives his sustenance from the destruction of innocence, Daniel's relationships with each of the members of SG-1 are an all-you-can-eat-buffet to the team's captor. One by one, each member of the team is forced to hurt and betray Daniel, both physically and emotionally, in an attempt to break his spirit and the ties that bind them together. Each one of those relationships is clearly drawn, nicely rooted in canon, and the "tests" are uniquely suited to play on the weaknesses of each relationship.

Too, I liked that these tests were only half of the story; the judgments and misunderstandings they face when they return home are even more potentially destructive. And maybe I'm a sucker for a "friendship conquers all" ending, but I adore the way Jack and Daniel finally make peace with each other. A little bit Hallmark, and a little bit Beavis and Butthead. A good read!

Why This Must Be Read: This is the only story I have found with this pairing so far and I have to say I loved it. Dex was new when this was wrote and I found his voice and actions to be very true and clear. Zelenka comes across very well and with a back drop of Sheppard/McKay how can you go wrong.

Why This Must Be Read: This story takes place during and after the episodes Evolution Part 1 and Evolution Part 2. It's told from the point of view of Dr. Bill Lee. The author captured the voice of Dr. Lee and uses it to tell the story from Evolution in a unique way. By doing this, she manages to bring in so many little things, other perspectives, that might otherwise get overlooked. A slight mention of a supposed fued between Dr. Lee and Sam is made all the more amusing by mention of it in a recent episode. The author also manages to fill in many gaps by explaining away lapses in continuity in a way that makes sense and inserting bits of scenes that there isn't time for in a 42-minutes episode (or however long the darn things are now).

I really enjoyed this more detailed look at the events in Evolution and I especially enjoyed reading it from a different perspective. There's even a lovely Daniel & Jack scene and it ends with the warm-fuzzies.

Why This Must Be Read: Two adult men written as two adult men. There’s no cliched "damsel in distress" or sickly sweet sappiness here. The intense, life-and-death interaction between John and Aiden in Thirty-eight Minutes is a natural springboard for their deepening relationship in this fic.

The canonical lack of character development that limits Aiden Ford's popularity in fan fiction seems, conversely, to inspire this writer. Taking the bare bones sketch of the character, Jalabert builds a wonderfully complete and compelling Aiden who is more than up to the challenge of John Sheppard. Having read this piece early in the first season, I found myself watching the onscreen character through the lens of this Aiden.

This story has it all: hot sex, exploring Atlantis, military/civilian friction, and gentle humor. Bonus points for inclusion of characters other than the featured pairing, all of them ringing true but most especially a delightfully snarky, self-centered Rodney and Teyla, who is warm but at sea in a new culture.

Why This Must Be Read: The author's summary: "I have always wanted to write a Daniel-falls-into-a-freezing-river-and-Jack-has-to-stop-him-getting-hypothermia story and this is it. (Well the show won't provide me with one so what choice did they leave me?). And anyway it's fun making Jack jealous."

This was one of the first Jack/Daniel stories that I ever read, and it's still one of my favorites. This story has a little bit of adventure, plenty of drama, and some great angst from Jack. Parts of this story are so humorous because ELG gets the Jack/Daniel conversation exactly as I imagine they would have it. More than once, they get interrupted just as things get a bit interesting, but all is well in the end.

Why this story should be read: Because it is beautifully written, and offers a slightly different view of the relationship between Dr. McKay and Dr. Weir. The point of view is an observer, watching McKay's interactions with Elizabeth in the season finale. And because if you want to read McKay/Weir, this author has probably written over half of the stories online, and this is an example of the best of her writing.

Why This Must Be Read: Ford and McKay in an ice-cave...and they don't murder each other, surprisingly. This has more or less been jossed by canon as of Runner, but it's still a very nice piece of Ford/McKay interaction, without any guns, shooting, or violence. Well. No real violence. They're both perfectly in-character, and a wonderful reminder of what Ford could have been if the writers had given him the chance.

Not to mention, it's just plain funny. In a fandom that has a distinct shortage of Ford-fic (and nothing makes me happier than two people recc'ing Ford), this one's definately a gem.

Why This Must Be Read:

This is an achy read that even I, a non-Jack/Paul slasher, enjoyed.

Jack is sent off by Hammond on a compassionate leave due to the death of Daniel Jackson. He retreats to his special spot where he can think and fish, but when paperwork arises that needs to be signed, Jack refuses to return back to Cheyenne. Paul Davis is sent with the paperwork and... you should read to find out what happens.

Their reactions/responses are so heart-breakingly true to characters that it was amazing ~ combining it with a bit of angst and a pinch of humor. Moth writes extremely well, and her O'Neill is dead on correct. I can hear her O'Neill speak in lines such as this...

...Especially when we came, simultaneously and gloriously - and both yelled the wrong, the very wrong, name, the same wrong name, at that crucial moment... ...

....I vaguely remember showering, taking three times as long as necessary because we showered together and couldn't stop touching. I groaned when I remembered previous showers à deux - with that slimy, two-timing slut who was presumably grinning at us from his higher plane. (How could someone who treated us like that reach a higher plane anyway?)
