Reading Lessons by Pewter (G)

Rec Category: Jack/Daniel Friendship

Characters: Jack O'Neill, Daniel Jackson, mention of other SG-1 characters
Category: Missing Scene/Epilogue, Gen, Drama, Angst
Warning: post-Forever in a Day (thus dealing with the death of Sha're)
Author on LJ: I don't know.
Author's Website: Other Stories by Pewter at The Comfort Zone

Link: Reading Lessons by Pewter

Why This Must Be Read: This story takes place about three weeks after Forever in a Day. It's told from Jack's point of view and is about how Daniel is dealing (or not dealing) with Sha're's death.

This story dealt with the post-Forever in a Day situation in a very unique way. I've read many stories in which Daniel broke down and was crying or that were incredibly angsty or smarmy or full of drama, but I've never read one like this. This story is quietly poignant, and the angst is very subtle though in plain sight. I could imagine having seen this scene on the show.

Crossing the Broca Divide by Moonshayde (PG)

Rec Category: Jack/Daniel Friendship

Characters: Daniel Jackson, Jack O'Neill
Category: Missing Scene/Episode Tag, Angst
Warning: No warning
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] moonshayde
Author's Website: Enter the Temple

Link: Crossing the Broca Divide by Moonshayde

Why This Must Be Read: This story isn't strictly Jack/Daniel friendship, but it has one of the best Jack/Daniel friendship scenes that I've ever read, so I felt it deserved to be recced in this category. [livejournal.com profile] moonshayde writes that this is her first Stargate story, but it doesn't feel like a first to me. I think that she nailed the characters of Jack and Daniel, especially in their scene together.

This story takes place during and after The Broca Divide, so it's set early in season 1. Most of the story is written in 1st person, Daniel's point of view, as though he were writing a journal entry, which the author uses to great effect. It reads like the kind of journal entry Daniel might actually make. He writes his thoughts about the upcoming mission and about what happened after. The ending scene is especially delightful and my favorite part of the story.

Rec Category: Jack O'Neill
Pairing: None
Category: SG1, Vignettes, Humor, Angst
Warning: Spoilers for "Fragile Balance"
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author's Website: O'Neill's House
Link: Balancing Acts

Why This Must Be Read: Once again, we go to the inimitable BadgerGater for some of the best in Jack O'Neill characterization. This time, BG takes a stab at the inner workings of Fragile Balance, taking a look at some of the missing moments from this ep from the POV of Daniel, Sam, Young Jack, and "real" Jack through a series of seven connected vignettes as they move through the chronology of the episode. There's all parts of the spectrum here, from the sublime to the ridiculous, and I like how these differing viewpoints really serve to flesh out not just the events of the episode, but all of Jack's character. Most fic only pays lip service to the fact that MiniJack really *is* Jack O'Neill - the convergence of memories is a handy plot device - but these fics use the deux ex machina of a second chance at life to correct all of Jack's mistakes. This is a great exploration, though mostly implied, of the fact that these two people really are just the same guy. It's sad, funny, and sweet all at the same time.

Why This Must Be Read:
Written for the [livejournal.com profile] swficathon. Jen is one of my favorite Sheppard/Weir fic writer, if not my favorite fic writer altogether. Not only does she narrate with what appears to be unwavering ease, she also manages to capture the featuring characters' personalities flawlessly. This fic is a prime example of that. She loves to write angst but she can write fluff like no one else. Extra credit for using her trademark drunk Sheppard and Weir. I think she's just about the only one who can pull off that feature. All her other fics should be read as well.

Why This Must Be Read: This is a fun General Jack story told from Daniel's point of view. I love this view of how Daniel might have felt after Jack became the general (The Man), and how Jack reacted to the stress of his new position.

Why this must be read

"... Before anyone had a chance to react to that shock, four figures suddenly stepped through the portal. Two pulse pistols instantly went up, one slightly before the other. Almost as fast, a pair of identical weapons and a third resembling a staff were leveled. ..."

I missed out on seeing Farscape on tv, so my introduction to this fandom was through various crossovers. This is one of my favourites as it doesn't demand a huge suspension of disbelief to make the two universes mesh.
