Why This Must Be Read: A couple of years after the events of Scorched Earth, the Gadmeer express a desire to meet Daniel Jackson by issuing an invitation the SGC cannot refuse. The plot thickens when the SGC receives an unexpected, vague caution from our allies.
Why does this invitation draw galactic attention? Are the Gadmeer as peace-loving and trustworthy as Lotan led the team to believe? How reliable is the shocking tale the Gadmeer tell about the race who wiped out their planet? Is the gift offered to Daniel legitimate and, if so, what will he decide to do with it?
There are a few, quiet moments in which each member of the team acknowledges, and deals with, the trauma of Daniel’s death. This was largely denied us onscreen so it’s doubly satisfying here. It’s odd to be recommending a story told from Sam’s point of view in the "Daniel Jackson" category but don’t let the narrator fool you; this is about who Daniel is and what makes him Daniel.
That said, it stays firmly within team fic territory, in which all of SG-1 are present and have important roles within the story. The characters are well-written and easily recognizable as what I see on my screen each week. While SG-1 and the Gadmeer negotiate an understanding, the story ties together some dangling story threads from canon and sheds light on a distant past that some might prefer to keep buried.
