Summary: Atlantis has saved Earth from Wraith invasion, but now sits in San Francisco Bay, cloaked and damaged. With no immediate plans to return to the Pegasus Galaxy, what is going to happen to Todd? And how far is John Sheppard willing to go to protect him?

Why This Must Be Read: For anyone who found Todd being stuck in a jail cell at the end of the series as frustrating as I did, here's a delightful romp that follows John's efforts to set Todd free from Atlantis' brig, and explores the palpable-but-long-denied tension that existed between them from the moment they met.

Author's Summary: SG-1 finds an unwelcome surprise on an alien planet

This could have been an episode of SG-1. Denise claims this was her first fan fic, so there's a couple of teeny burbles, but in the end, it's an interesting story. The "A" implies it was written for SG_FigNewton's Soup challenges.

This is typical "mission gone awry" -- on what looks like a boring mission to search for Kheb, bad things happen. Sam gets hurt, Jack is forced to shoot Teal'c (it makes sense at the time) and they lose their GDO. There's a couple of moments of major worry, but I will spoil this enough to tell you that there's a good ending.

It's a satisfying story... long enough to be interesting, but not too long that you have to slog through anything.

Author's Summary: Jack O'Neill needs a vacation... away from Earth...so what better place than a whole new galaxy.

Why This Must Be Read:

Jack and Rodney together on Atlantis! It's a less often seen combination and Tarlan hits this one out of the park.

This is a series of fic, but the majority of the story is in the initial fic, One Way Ticket. There are five ficlets that go with the base fic, mostly after the initial fic. But they make a good follow up to the basic story.

It's mostly from Jack's POV, and he spends a good part of the fic angsting over his attraction to Rodney. But Rodney gets his own in, pining over Jack.

It's on a mission gone awry where Jack gets hurt that our boys get together, but it's not easy.

But after some steamy sex, Jack needs to go back to Earth. He's on vacation after all! But, being his brilliant self, Rodney comes up with a solution that makes everyone happy!

Why This Must Be Read:

Following the theme of team, I’m switching focus on this one. It is more like the first one I recced, in that the team has difficulties to overcome. While many fanfic's goes there, this one is noteworthy in the fact that it is Sam, not Jack who struggles with Daniel’s point of view. You see this rarely in the show itself, though it comes up a couple of times. Here it is fleshed out more. If you enjoy an emotional story like I do, then this one is worth the read.

Why This Must Be Read:

Out of all stargate fanfiction I have personally read, this story feels a smidge different. The writer adds elements of fantasy into a sci-fi story. Considering the different nature of fantasy, this cannot be an easy thing to do. But the writer manages it well here. Using those elements, the writer explores the concepts of human connection, friendship, and family. It made me think, as well filled me with warm fuzzies when I finished it. That is a sign of a good story to me.

Why This Must Be Read:

What if Jack was captured by the alien Nem, and not Daniel? So that Daniel, Sam and Teal'c would think Jack had died... Jack wouldn't have a chance in heck of identifying 'Omoroca'... What happens next is that Nem finally decides Jack can't help him directly, but that Jack can be let loose to fight the Goa'uld.

But without a GDO or any communication device, Jack has to use his ingenuity -- and rely on some good luck -- to have a chance at getting back home.

Graculus' story could be an episode. It's well written and a good read!

Why This Must Be Read: Actually, I was going to save this as my capstone rec, but decided to get it out there before the chance for 'summer reading' was mostly gone (TTH has options to download fic to a reader device/computer/phone). "A Different Future" is an epic length series with multiple crossovers that is worth every single little word and most published fiction these days doesn't hold a candle to it. Behind the cut due to length... )

Snippet of fic: Actually, it's more like a large portion of chapter one of "Someone Else's Mess", but it sets up the crossover and gives a good idea of what the story is about (cleaning up the mess the Initiative left behind, hence the title).

Why This Must Be Read: Part of me thinks this reads so well to me because, like Sam in this story, I am an outsider to SGA trying to work it out. But most of me thinks this is simply a fantastic, gripping fic that both SGA and SG-1 fans can love!

This is early Sam-in-command-of-Atlantis, still dealing with she's-not-Elizabeth-Weir resentment from the Atlantis team. This is Sam, dealing with a mystery and bad guys with courage and brains and sheer determination. This is Sam and Teyla being awesome together and the team working flawlessly. Add some delightful SG-1 crossing over with superb characterization, and you've got a long, satsifying read that'll definitely leave you wanting more!

One final note: the author labels this as "S/J, but could be read with gen goggles." There was only a single line or two in the final paragraphs that required me to settle my gen goggles firmly on my nose to read as casual male/female friendship, but for Sam/Jack fans, consider that aspect a bonus.

As well, the nature of the problem and the original characters are both interesting and engaging.

Why This Must Be Read: This long story is replete with action, drama, team interaction, great world-building, and richly-written original characters. As far as action / adventure stories go, this is one of the golden-oldies of the fandom. The author's understated summary says "SG-1 visit a world where everyone has disappeared" ... but don't be fooled by the simplicity of that summary. Also don't be fooled by the apparent emphasis on Daniel in the early stages of the story - the plot involves the entire team working to do what they do best: save a world.

The author's fics have gone off-line. Her work is only available via Wayback links, so this rec hopefully serves a dual purpose: to re-introduce you to a wonderful story, and to keep Lex's fic alive for that little bit longer. I hope you enjoy it.

Why This Must Be Read: This story is an off-world adventure in which SG-1 discovers hidden dangers and unanswered questions. I love the engaging writing style and the characterisations are (in my opinion) pretty close to spot-on. I found it a bit on the Sam-centric side, which is absolutely fine; I love it when a well-written Sam gets to shine! In second place on the centricity scale comes one of my favourite things to read: an entertainingly portrayed 'Grumpy-Jack', with some excellent one-liners.There's questionably a wee subtle tiny hint of Sam-Jack buried under a couple of lines, but really, only for those readers who move in that direction; for me, this story is a very enjoyable Teamfic.

Link: Gypsies, Pirates, and Thieves series on AO3
Why This Must Be Read: Most SGA fans will know Auburn's novel-length fic Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves, the first in this series. There are two shorter (if you can call 11,000 words shorter!) follow-on fics that are also well-known (Killdeer and Everybody Knows). But hey - there are two new ones in the series! Beg, Borrow, or Steal was posted in October 2017, and the very latest one, Lawyers, Guns, and Money is still posting as a WIP - it's up to 9/26 chapters (ETA- it’s complete!). The last two fics are crossovers with NCIS LA and NCIS. So this already epic novel will have a novel-length sequel. I like the twists Auburn builds into the AU, with very different back-stories for John and Rodney, a lot of SG1 characters ending up in Pegasus including Janet Fraiser, prominent roles for Jack O'Neill and Vala, and Teyla as the runner, not Ronon. The non-con/violence is in flash-backs and canon-typical - what you expect when a Goa'uld controls your life. It's a great read - somewhat dark in places, yes, but as ever, Auburn's a master of plot and characterization. I'm not especially into NCIS, but I didn't have any trouble following those parts.
