Why This Must Be Read: An oldie, but a goodie. It's a Vala goes home fic, a wonderful Vala goes home fic. And the language is beautiful. It's a gentle story that takes you through watching as Vala deals with what her childhood has become and you can see how it shakes her. There's also a nice Daniel/Vala friendship moment (ust if you choose to see that way) in the fic as well, where Daniel understands just what this place is to her, but it's really about Vala and the changes that have happened in her life.

Hariboo_smirks gives us a look into Daniel and Vala's odd relationship through the eyes of Jack O'Neill. Jack's known Daniel longer than anyone else on the team and gives us a unique perspective on things. We assume a lot happens off screen during The Shroud and also The Road Not Taken. What was Vala doing during that time? This fills in the blanks a little, with a bit of help from Jack. What's so great about this is that Jack sees a lot of what the audience sees. This gives us the deep insight of an observer watching Daniel and Vala. Truly a great story that deserves to be read because it includes the great humor we know as Jack but also the little moments that we see in Daniel when Vala is near.

chattycatsmeow weaves quite a bit into the story. The five purchases are explained from the points of view of both Vala and Daniel, and their voices are very distinct. Its amusing and sad at the same time and quite enjoyable. A nice, quick read.

Why This Must Be Read: Set in season ten, this fic does an amazing job of exploring the dynamics of the new SG-1 and how Jack fits in with them. Jenn is great at getting into Jack's head and exploring his issues and regrets, and her Jack and Sam are complicated and real and just so right. Add that together with just a tiny hint of Sam/Cameron, and you have a compelling fic that is a must-read for any Sam/Jack fan.

brainofck does not disappoint in Grains of Sand. Alt!Jack has tracked Daniel and his jug of firewater to a nearby sand dune where Daniel has inexplicably decided now is the moment to wrap his big ~~and slightly pickled~~ brain around the concept of Alternate Universes. As he moves through philosophical, tearful, bitter and angry, Daniel provides one of the best canon-supported summaries of Jack's relationship to his team I've read. And it makes the reader wonder, can you love the one you're with?

Why This Must Be Read: Stemmed of the particularly snarky exchange that Daniel and Vala have during the beginning of "Bad Guys" that ends with Vala's line of, "I don't think you want to start thinking what I think." Nat gives a nice look at how the exchange came to be. Daniel is Daniel, hiding from what he feels, but he also lets go for a brief moment before he retreats back into his himself. Vala reaction is done very well - she does not makes any apologies for what she feels and for Daniel's behaviour. Good girl, very nicely done. Vala, too.

This can kind of be seen as an alternate approach to The Seige where everyone evacuates Atlantis rather than staying to defend it. However Elizabeth isn't able to let go and although her relationship with Rodney develops she is never really there and Rodney never pushes her. Whilst this is a sad fic, by the end of it you feel that there is hope, even if they can't return to Earth or Atlantis

NB: I've marked this as a WIP to be on the safe side, because an overarching plot has emerged, but it's much more of an ongoing novel-length series; the individual stories are emotionally complete and satisfying in themselves. Your mileage may vary, but I know several WIP-phobic people who are happily reading this.

synecdochic asks: What do you get if you take a version of Cameron Mitchell who's kind of halfway between canon-Cam and "The Road Not Taken" Cam, and put him together with the clone of one Jack O'Neill, and just keep riffing on it?

And one of the answers is: two brilliantly insightful pieces of Jack characterization for the price of one.

(There are other answers too, which involve graceful writing, a complex and mature take on relationships, organic plotting, and -- that rarity of rarities in fanfic -- a realistic, un-melodramatic depiction of life with a disability. But they would run the risk of turning this into an essay rather than a rec.)

Why This Must Be Read: You mean besides it is a classic among Carter-fics? I was shocked that this was not among those that were already rec'd, but I am glad no one did because now I can.

In the Pilot episode, Carter mention her many hours logged in enemy space during the gulf war. The author takes an opportunity of the lapse in time in "Small Victories" to allow Carter to recount her life before the Persian Gulf War to Col. Jack O'Neil.

The fic aims and hits a bullseye in enriching Carter as a character. The backstory that is given to Carter in this fic is just extraordinary. I am with a lack of words to convey what a true gem 1991 is. The raw emotion. The realism to it. Just amazing, a true epic. What I think the fic excels at the most is that you can actually believe all this happened to Carter.

janedavitt is the author who chose to embark upon this crack!fic-turned -epic adventure. It is, in a word, gripping. MacGyver is hired to investigate thefts at an archaological dig in Egypt and encounters one young Daniel Jackson, who is every bit as sulky, intractable, and brilliant as you would expect. There are bad guys, sand, broken-down jeeps, sand, ingenious MacGyverisms, sand...The UST throughout the story will have you urging Mac to just get to Cairo and get the boy a bloody ice cream, fercryinoutloud. There are intriguing nods at what will be Daniel's future as well as some shadows of his past. This story is a fun romp. Go. Read. Comment.

Why This Must Be Read: A short little fic set between the time John finds out about the Stargate and when he goes to Atlantis, "A Day of Surprises" is based on the assumption that John and Sam have actually known each other for awhile. John's reaction at seeing her and realizing what she had been doing all these years is perfect, and the author does a great job of showing us both the easy, solid friendship that the two share as well as the undercurrent of something deeper. A great read that fills up some of the holes in both characters backstories, and I highly recommend it.

Why This Must Be Read: Because Dominion left so many little moments that we wish we had been privy to and this shows just a few of those very nicely. The exchanges feel real and the whole fic feels like this is how all these events could have happened in the episode, had we been given them. The hints of Daniel and Vala are small but poignant and very sweet.

He grinned a little sheepishly and kissed her forehead. Vala put a hand on his cheek and smiled before turning and walking out of the office.

Why this must be read:

Ideally, such an event was supposed to be heralded by something other than a vague sense of dread, but Elizabeth Weir had learned long ago that reality was rarely ideal. Her impending nuptials were neither her choice nor her desire, but rather her duty – a state of affairs that she had become more than accustomed to over the years.

I had intended to rec the SG1 story from this verse, A Maneuvering Business, but I then discovered that it had already been recc'ed last year. So instead I present the Atlantis version! This story does make reference to events in A Maneuvering Business, so I also recommend you read that one

This is Stargate, Jane Austen style and the author has picked up on the style of Austen quite well, without losing the essence of the characters. Although this is not intended to be a historically accurate piece, the story does pick up on the difficulties of conducting relationships in this era, especially for women. Elizabeth is in her element in this fic, still working the political circuit, albeit more discretely, but also being graceful and dignified, whilst some of the men struggle a little to be proper gentlemen (eg Rodney!)

The SG1 version with Jack and Sam was very fluffy and had the happy ending. The Atlantis version however is fluffy, but ends on a more bittersweet note
