Why This Must Be Read: You mean besides it is a classic among Carter-fics? I was shocked that this was not among those that were already rec'd, but I am glad no one did because now I can.
In the Pilot episode, Carter mention her many hours logged in enemy space during the gulf war. The author takes an opportunity of the lapse in time in "Small Victories" to allow Carter to recount her life before the Persian Gulf War to Col. Jack O'Neil.
The fic aims and hits a bullseye in enriching Carter as a character. The backstory that is given to Carter in this fic is just extraordinary. I am with a lack of words to convey what a true gem 1991 is. The raw emotion. The realism to it. Just amazing, a true epic. What I think the fic excels at the most is that you can actually believe all this happened to Carter.
"The Gulf," Carter answered simply.
"Ah."
His unenthusiastic response didn't faze her. She knew that Colonel
O'Neill had acquired some of his personal demons during the Persian Gulf
War. The topic was a sensitive one, something not often spoken of. He had
never questioned her about any of her experiences in the war, either, and
she had never volunteered any information. She hadn't been sure if he was
even interested until now.
"Care to tell me about it?"
"Yes, sir. I would."
