Why This Must Be Read: We've seen on screen that John Sheppard seems to have fairly relaxed standards when it comes to choosing sex partners (alive, breathing and throwing themselves at him seem to be the qualifications), and for the most part his rather juvenile behavior is tolerated (though not quietly by any means) by his teammates when it doesn't endanger them.

I'm not fond of those episodes at all (obviously *g*), nor am I fond of stories where one-half of my favorite pairing ends up in bed with someone other than the other half of the pairing. *g* But I like this story anyway, because its focus is mostly on John's adventures in being captured by slavers and waiting to be rescued by his team while he's incapacitated.

This story feels like an episode to me. Well, an episode we could see if the SFC would actually tolerate a well-written story where the openly bisexual nudist aliens' very male leader ends up as Sheppard's babe of the week. And really, I mean that in the best way. *vbg*

Why This Must Be Read: Whilst not primarily about Kavanagh, this story is a wonderful piece for secondary characters - including him. One of a few stories that show him working with others, as part of a functioning team. He still has the element of jerk here (as is needed since he's no angel by far) but its offset with him as a person, and in a decent context and characterisation. A thoroughly enjoyable and well thought out story that shows Kavanagh to be three-dimensional just like all the other characters in it, despite the fact none of them are well developed on show. Also wonderful due to the premise it's set on - the 'what if' set in the alternate "Before I Sleep" timeline.

Why This Must Be Read:The fic comprises of a small set of three emails sent by Kavanagh, technically set post "Critical Mass" (but only just, hence it's more of a tag) and relate to the episode, going some way to explaining what he said during it. I found it quite touching despite the shortness, the format working really well for the subject matter - subtle but effective. I had no trouble at all picturing Kavanagh as having written them, great characterisation whilst staying true to how he's been on show. A great addition to what was seen in the episode, developing on it really well.
