Why This Must Be Read: When Daniel goes missing while off-world and is then suspected of being a zatarc, what is more harrowing - his imprisonment by unseen aliens or his rescue by his friends and team?  The author offers a chillingly effective portrait of physical and psychological terror that the reader feels with the heart, the senses, and the mind, and accents it with a heartbreaking poignancy as Daniel contemplates his past and his present, his loss and his hope.

Author's Summary: "Can Daniel trust the SGC, and can they trust him?"

Why This Must Be Read: My other recs for the month have been of the angsty variety, so I'll close it out with some lighter fare. After the events of Enemy Mine, Daniel has the distinct pleasure of leading Jack, Teal'c, Colonel Edwards and SG-11 in an off-world training exercise to learn the finer aspects of Archaeology in the field, and the reader has the distinct pleasure of "watching " him do it, as if it really were an extension of the episode. And while Daniel is in his archaeological element, he still has time to bewitch, bother, and bewilder Jack, who Daniel has decided he wants and needs, leaving Jack faced with a Daniel who's both irresistable force and immovable object. As always, Biblio's spot-on characterizations and master craftsmanship of words are well in evidence, and, here, we're treated to a lively humor that's never contrived or out of context, but always organic to both story and character.

Author's Summary: "After seven years of being broken in, Jack is pretty much used to giving Daniel whatever he wants.  Caving works for him.  It's just that this time, what Daniel wants is Jack."

Why This Must Be Read:
What if s4 alternative reality from John's pov. John's emotions are just right, not too much, not too little. The style that it is told in tells us enough but not too much. The short section are like snapshots of someone's life.

He finds it a little ironic that it is Larrin that ends up rescuing Elizabeth.

Okay, so maybe "rescuing" isn't quite the right word. More like, "stumbled across while stealing other people's shit."

Why This Must Be Read:   This is a very enjoyable fic that I have read many times. It is a friends turn lover romance plus a some whump.  I give this story an A+.

Summary:  Sam and Janet's friendship takes a romantic turn and an explosion rocks the SGC

Snippit:

Janet shook herself from her reverie and watched Sam carefully pick through the table of sale items, checking each organizer for its various features. Dissatisfied, she turned to the regular rack and let her hand drift across a leather briefcase.

Janet shook her head in amusement. "It costs too much and it's impractical."

Sam arched an eyebrow and an impish grin spread across her face.

"Usually, those are the only things worth having."

Sam reluctantly pulled her questing fingers from the item in question and headed further up the aisle, towing the shopping cart behind her. It took her a minute to realize that Janet was not keeping up. She turned and stared quizzically at the doctor.

Who looked as if she'd been thumped across the head with a two by four.

"Janet?"

There was a lengthy pause while Janet canted her head to one side, observing Sam like she'd never seen her before, cataloguing and quantifying.

"What? Did you see something you like?"

The question freed Fraiser from her momentary stupor and she spoke slowly, a note of amazement in her tone.

"Yes...but I'll have to think about it."

Why This Must Be Read: Copperbadge is one of those writers where people read his grocery lists because they're art (and also funny). His writing has taken me from one fandom to another, simply because he has a way of illuminating the humanity in characters and imbuing them with a mythical significance. He makes them alive and larger than life, and then he gives them great plotty playgrounds to play in -- what's not to love? In this story, we have a John Sheppard with a robot brain, learning to live with that (and its implications), and his relationships with the people who created him that way. It also, scarily, makes canon make a lot more sense. . . .

Author's Summary: John Sheppard died in Afghanistan, but as he's still walking around (thanks to a cybernetic brain and Rodney McKay's genius) he doesn't see a need to belabor the point.

Why This Must Be Read:
Happy Halloween! And what better to celebrate the holiday than a nice, long, creepy and suspenseful action-adventure story? John and Rodney find themselves trapped on a planet with a malfunctioning stargate (like they so often do), fighting for survival against a real live monster--and then things get weird. A couple of cool twists make this story much more than a simple h/c romp (though there is some delicious Sheppard-whump, if that's your cup of tea); the exploration of the characters, and their relationship, is intense.

Why This Must Be Read:
Halloween is my favourite season: the chill in the air, the golden leaves and long shadows, the dead coming back to haunt us.... It's a Ray Bradbury season, so what better way to finish off my recs 'o' horror and mystery than with the carnival coming to Atlantis in the middle of the night? The supernatural-or-is-it element is very well balanced, the humour hits in all the right places, and the demon (or Ancient) in the schoolroom is marvelously creepy. Rodney having to deal with the supernatural is sort of a personal kink of mine: it's so distateful to him. Happy Halloween!

Why This Must Be Read:

When dealing with the aftermath of two really bad missions, Sam and Jack also have to deal with the regs. The author writes a sweet yet angsty story of two people's need for each other when times are bad and how they bend the rules but not break them.

Tomorrow is the first of a new month. Ya'll wanna volunteer (you should've done it by now *G*) you'd best get to it.

Now, new rule.

For the next two weeks, any comment made on a volunteer post will be taken as a volunteer for the current month. Around the 15th of the month I will make a post to this community saying "volunteering for this month is now closed. Any comments made hereafter will be taken as volunteering for next month."

Clear?

Hopefully, this will get you all volunteering ahead of time and I won't have to go chasing volunteers like I do, because, really? With over a thousand people watching this community I shouldn't have to. Stories don't rec themselves people.

to volunteer
