Why This Must Be Read: The author's fic summary is as follows: "SG-1 is used to dangerous places, but when Daniel Jackson is sent to investigate a Goa'uld crash, the whole team learns that some places are more dangerous than others" ... and boy, do they ever! Lotsa lotsa of you out there may have (probably have?) already heard of and read this before, but for those of who you have not: this is a long (almost novel-length), well-crafted action / suspense / light-horror story which will keep you on the edge of your seat.

The monster-baddies may be recognisable from elsewhere, but use of them in this story is seamless; not only are they a natural fit for an SG-1 story, but the author has really brought them to life. While this epic adventure is weighted toward Daniel (out of necessity), the rest of the team - plus a few very well constructed original characters - play a significant role in the story as well. I humbly suggest that even readers who might not be partial to Daniel-focused stories give this fic a go regardless. It had me on the edge of my seat right the way through, and would have done so no matter who the stranded character. The setting, pacing, interplay between suspense and relief, and original characters are skillfully written, and the interactions between Daniel and the OCs he finds himself trapped with held my interest - and evoked emotional responses - equally as well as did the action sequences.

With the grudging help of an abrasive McKay, can he figure out what's really going on?

This is a long, absorbing mystery, told tightly within a very confused Jack's POV, that will keep you guessing throughout all its twisty turns.

This short fic (3300 words) is not for the faint of heart. It seems like classic mission-gone-wrong but it quickly goes off into a horror realm when Jack confronts Teal'c. You aren't quite sure what Jack is concerned about, but when Jack attacks Teal'c without overt remorse, you suspect something is not right.

It's not until Jack fights Daniel that you know something is horribly wrong.

The ending is suitably chilling.

Why This Must Be Read: It's an apocalypse fic with werewolves. How can anything possibly get more awesome than that? (I say this even though I'm not generally much of an apocafic fan.)

So, Werewolves of the Apocalypse is actually a series of two stories which the author had clearly intended to continue on at some point and didn't for whatever reason. Don't be scared by its unfinished status, though, because the open ending of the second story does make for a satisfying conclusion. In the first story, Travelling with Wolves, issaro does an amazing job of showing us our two characters meeting as well as their individual experiences of the end of the world, which were vastly different. The second story shows them getting to know each other better as they reach their destination, while tip-toeing around each other's idiosyncrasies and neurosis. Up until the end, issaro does a great job keeping the reader guessing as to what exactly happened to create the fever that killed the majority of the world's population. It's definitely well worth the read!

Why This Must Be Read: Tarlan is one of my very favourite authors of fandom and this is one of my favourite series by the author.

The first part of a four part series which initially is a crossover with a Hewligan production, Tarlan explains, “SGA/SG1 AU crossover based on the David Hewlett film “Survivor” where DH's character had no name so he can be an AU version of Rodney McKay :-)”

The Series Summarys says: Rodney McKay escapes the horror within the Morpheus I drilling station but the danger has not passed. As his life entwines with the John Sheppard and the Stargate program, he learns that there is a lot more to discover out in the stars--Atlantis.

So, Rodney is a medical doctor who has been part of a expedition in Antartica, who inadvertently break into an alien space craft that has been buried beneath the snow for millions of years. Its occupant is an alien whose species’ food source is human.
Rodney’s character is very much tempered here, he has seen the horrors of being a trauma specialist and what can be done to a human by other then caught in the grasp of an alien and he has yet to emerge into the full McKay.

To end our bout of horror recs this month, I bring you a gentler take on the horror ideals. Instead of gruesome images and horrid fates, Sholio spins us a tale of gentle sorrow and ghostly shadows. Either way the reader takes, from Atlantis producing these shadows of her dead 'cause her people want to see them or her dead really coming home to rest, you will feel a twitch in the heart for the city's lost and those left behind. Still expect to feel the shivers, though, 'cause Sholio is as adept in writing chills as she is team-y goodness and action/adventure. From shadows out of the corner of the eye to silent stares to motionless gliding, this fic will leave you breathless and sad at the same time. A fitting end for horror recs, eh?

Then he learns that not everything is as it seems... Through wonderful use of shadow and light, Lilac drives us to a dynamic conclusion fueled by John's guilt and the comfort that he finds in Rodney. You'll love every second of this gem!

The disjointed storytelling and very disturbing implications involved here just leave me flabbergasted. The real horror in this story is what isn't described but is left for the reader to imagine. And let me tell you, imagination can be a dang creepy chick... Team Sheppard get drugged while offworld and "share the Night" with aliens. While recovering on Atlantis, the team needs to come to terms with what they did while under the influence with mixed success. Leave the lights on for this one, folks...

In a world filled with the stench and image of decay and death, they try and make it to the Stargate and home. This fic will leave you shivering in your chair and thanking whatever deity you hold dear that you aren't in their shoes...

A twisted, twisted tale of Ronon and Teyla stuck in a time loop, slowly going nuts, angry, and lost. In the tradition of "Windows of Opportunity" and Jack's famous "Wacko" line, Teyla and Ronon actually reach that point, breaking under the strain of years stuck in a time loop, with no way out and no one who can help. What's really freaky about this story is how plausible it is. How Teyla and Ronon are portrayed by elementalv is scarily in character for this situation and we all know that time loops are canon. It really could happen... *shiver*

Story Summary: “Teyla.” Her name sounds more like a curse than anything else, and she supposes she deserves that, given what he’s seen her do over the years.

Playing around with such canon elements as AI and the ATA gene, Layton takes us on a journey of terror and shock through the refuge of the expedition, Atlantis itself. Through foreshadowing that is out of this world, we get to see how having the ATA gene affects John and Rodney in a way that was never expected. Afterwards, it's a race to the finish to save everyone from a danger that no one ever saw coming on Atlantis. I swear I had a pillow handy to hide behind for portions of this fic; Layton's use of images and foreshadowing had me freaked out by the end. It will you too!

Rodney moves to the North of Canada to his uncle's old cable broadcasting building after a scandal at his previous job. After fiddling with a radio, however, he starts to dream of a dark-haired man and getting a distress call that will come to make no sense. At times this fic seemed like a straight forward narrative; and yet, whizzy would pull right turns and flips that leave me on the edge of my seat, wondering where the story was going from there. And the ending... Just WOW.... This fic will keep you up and checking those dark corners and closets for dark-haired men.

Story Summary: There was an entire pantheon of things Rodney was willing to concede could exist, even though he'd never personally witnessed evidence thereof. Time travel, for starters. Space aliens. The perfect man. But he absolutely, positively could not accept that he'd been dreaming of a guy he'd never seen before in his life, who turned out to be real.

Summary: In nature there is no evil, only an abundance of horror. —Isak Dinesen (13k words)

This one is utterly horrifying. (The opening quotation from Proverbs, "Like a moth in clothing, or a maggot in wood, sorrow gnaws at the human heart", is quite deliberate.) Trapped in a collapse, Rodney is relieved to discover he is not the only survivor, but their predicament swiftly worsens until Rodney must make a terrible and devastating choice. Rodney's various aspects are showcased nicely here, from his disdain for coworkers and grudging recognition of competence to his determination to keep others safe and sometimes surprising bravery. The writers recognize, too, that what they put Rodney through would leave more scars than simply the physical — but that Rodney is stubborn enough to fight back, in his own way.

Though more of an AU get-together/horror story, what grabbed me in Haunted was the humor and hijinks between John and Rodney. I had to control my giggles to keep from waking up my sis in the next room over during their interactions. I especially loved their stake-out in the hallway outside Madison's bedroom for her "ghost". The way these two played off each other was fantastic! So add this to a sweet get-together and a somewhat creepy horror story and this made for a very nice diversion for an evening.

Story Summary: Rodney and his niece Madison buy an old manor in the small town of Origin, which the locals believe to be haunted. And it most definitely is.

Summary: A Wraith is loose in Las Vegas, and when the Atlantis team stumbles across a couple of detectives already on the case, two guys who ride around in a ’67 Impala and look nothing like local PD, they quickly come to the conclusion that life would go a lot more smoothly if they all just worked together. But things are crumbling around them fast, the ground slipping away beneath their feet, and it forces both John Sheppard and Dean Winchester to the same eventual realization: it’s time to stop lying to themselves, once and for all.

Why This Must Be Read: This is a fantastic story for many reasons. One of them is the developing friendship and understanding between Dean Winchester and John Sheppard. Another is the development of the romantic relationships on two slash fronts in both fandoms. John Sheppard and Rodney McKay finally get with the program and, for the angelically inclined, Dean Winchester finally figures out this thing between him and the angel Castiel. If you don't know Supernatural I definitely rec this anyway because the author provides a cheat sheet for each show at the beginning that will get you up to speed.

Furthermore, there are other bits that will make you smile. Like the camaraderie that develops between Teyla and Sam. Due love is given to our entire team and our Supernatural players and it's all set against an awesome plotty backdrop.

In the end, I hope you're as excited for the upcoming sequel as I am!

These scientists fight back.

Creepy and evocative, with great insight into Daniel's character and an excellent portrayal of McKay, this story will grip you and leave you looking over your shoulder. Eerily, frighteningly good.
