Why This Must Be Read:
Halloween is my favourite season: the chill in the air, the golden leaves and long shadows, the dead coming back to haunt us.... It's a Ray Bradbury season, so what better way to finish off my recs 'o' horror and mystery than with the carnival coming to Atlantis in the middle of the night? The supernatural-or-is-it element is very well balanced, the humour hits in all the right places, and the demon (or Ancient) in the schoolroom is marvelously creepy. Rodney having to deal with the supernatural is sort of a personal kink of mine: it's so distateful to him. Happy Halloween!
"I grew up in this little town," John continued, as if Rodney hadn't spoken. "And every year the carnival would come. I think we must have been the last stop on their tour, because it was always early fall by the time they arrived. School had already started and the leaves had started to turn, and they would come and set up in this big empty field across from the elementary school. And I remember, every year, sitting and watching the Ferris wheel go up while the teacher droned on and on, knowing that soon, in just a few more hours, I'd be able to go out there, to go up there..."
