Why this must be read: The is set at the beginning of S2 SGA/S8 SG1. At first glance this is almost a character study of John Sheppard as seen by Jack O'Neill, but look a little closer and you see that this is also very much a character study of who Jack is, what he values and the dedication he has to those under him.

A fantastic short story that shouldn't be missed.

Why this must be read:

While exploring an abandoned city on a dead world, Jack begins to suffer from progressive amnesia. As his memories of the past slip away, the rest of his team must find the cause - before the man they know vanishes entirely.

This is very much an SG1 adventure as we would see on the show, however, in this case we get to see the feelings/emotions/reaction that can only ever be hinted at on screen. The whole team has a part to play in this and everyone is marvelously in character. And as Jack loses his memories, we get to see what makes him the man he is today.

Col. Jack O'Neill blacks out the base and then promptly disappears. What is Jack planning and what is he willing to sacrifice in order to accomplish that plan?

This story is Jack at his best; noble, heroic and self-sacrificing. We see the smart, intelligent Oficer of the Uniter States Airforce, the one that spent years in Special Ops and has a phenomenal tactical mind. We see the Jack that only very rarely makes an appearance on the show.

This is an 'adventure of the week' type story which lets us see the usually hidden side of Jack O'Neill.

Why this must be read:

This truly is a magnum opus. The author starts her story somewhere around S4 Tangent and goes from there. What follows is story that spans years and universes.

Jack has been sacrificed by the Joint Chiefs to Apophis in return for Earth's safety. Hammond and the rest of SG1, while outraged, can do nothing. Against all odds, Jack survives and does what he does best - leads people to victory, and this time, without the beauracracy that hampered him at the SGC/on Earth. And as a result, he truly shines.

Again, this story very much portrays Jack as a (reluctant) hero and a brilliant, intelligent, tactical officer.

What truly awed me about this story is the way that, although the story is wildly AU, the author weaves in the storylines from later seasons. She doesn't necessarily do it the same way as the show did, but various storyline, plots, themes, characters etc, turn up, and due to the lack of Jack, we sometimes see a radically different outcome. I also loved Jack's 'revenge' - it truly was poetic justice, and Jack just rocked.

This fic is a grand sweeping tale of bretrayal, adventure, sacrifice and love.

As the author says in her warnings, this really is Shamelessly Hero Jack. And really, that alone makes it worth reading.

Why This Must Be Read: Cute story about Jack & Sara living next door to Daniel's first foster placement for a couple weeks and the magic that Jack can work on kids, and vice versa. ;) It's AU because the timeline is fudged.

Also, this story gets major bonus points for avoiding the two biggest cliches in kid-daniel fic (overdoing the asthma/allergies thing & violence in foster care). It also won best AU story (ship category) in the 2006 stargate fan awards. :)

Why This Must be Read: It's sad, then it's happy, then it's sad, then it's happy, but it's always good. Five little glimpses into the different interactions Carson has with other people. My favorite is the last one with Elizabeth, simply because these are two characters that I've rarely seen interact and eretria does it perfectly. The awkwardness and tenderness of the moment is perfect.

Why This Must Be Read: Someone wrote Kate fic! Do you know just how hard it is to find fic that features Kate? And it relates directly to her work as a psychologist, and it doesn't involve her solely reflecting other characters' emotions, words, and actions for the purpose of the story. It's hard to write the characterization of a psychologist during therapy, but we've gotten strong indications on the show of Kate's personality, not just her work persona, and it's nice to see someone exploring the non-work side of her, and how it meshes with the purpose she serves for the Atlantis expedition.
