Why This Must Be Read: Because the author manages to beautifully protray the friendship between two characters you don't often get to see interact much on the show. Teyla's POV is difficult for most authors to get, but canadian_snoopy is one of the few authors that not only understands where Teyla is coming from, but also elaborates on it. I never really thought about the loneliness Teyla must feel coming from a culture of interconnectedness that the Athosians have, to one of isolation in Atlantis. Her unlikely friend in the course of adjusting to it turns out to be McKay, and their friendship is just achingly beautiful. Teyla and McKay remain completely in character. I hesitate to call this a shipper piece, because the romantic aspects are really only in the last couple of lines. It's mostly about Teyla and McKay growing to be close friends.

Why This Must Be Read: It's rare to find decent fanfiction featuring Jonas, especially stories that can be defined as anything more than mediocre. When you do find the few exceptions, it's often a gem like this one. With this story, Philote manages to capture both Jack's and Jonas's voices while also showing the beginning of the gradual shift from Jonas being "Daniel's replacement" to becoming an important member of the team.

This story is set near the beginning of the sixth season, right after Jonas officially becomes a member of SG-1 and before the others, especially Jack, truly start to accept him. Jack and Jonas are caught in a crossfire, and they both have to work out some of the issues that have been plaguing them over the past few months.

Why This Must Be Read:
A first night fic for my first rec. It's short but shows Zelenka's first night in Atlantis realistically enough it could be canon. In fact, it's one of those fics that ended up sticking with me in the "was that in that show or did I just read it on the internet" way that is generally accompanied by vague hand gestures and weird looks from whomever I happen to be talking to at the moment.

It helps people find fics that they may want to rec. It's a brilliant idea, but it needs a bit of help in that she's needing mods. This is sort of a 'Welcome to Rec'cing' post with reminders and HTML help.

Just a couple of reminders. If you've rec'ced in the past, this would be more of a refresher than anything.

1. Please remember that we have volunteers who will tag your entry. That's their job to work through the entries and give them all the proper tags. We have three ladies who have a list of acceptable tags and they go through and put them on the entries for you.

2. Please check through the memories and make sure that your fic hasn't already been rec'ced. I know that looking through the memories can be a bit crazy as so many categories have come and gone over the last couple of years. Still, it helps to curb repeat recommendations.

3. Please make sure you are listed as a member of the comm. LJ will not let us give you posting access if you aren't.

4. For the 'Rec Category', make sure you list ONLY the category that you signed up for. In other words, if you signed up to rec Jack/Daniel, then your entry should read:

Please do not use the words, 'Character', 'Friendship', 'Genre', or 'Pairing' in your Rec Category. It makes it a bit more difficult for the volunteers who put the fics into memories.

Why This Must Be Read: Since I'm reccing het stories this month, I thought that I'd start out with something of a rare pairing.

Radek/Teyla is one of those pairings that shouldn't work, but tielan manages to make it fit seemlessly into the cracks left by canon. She shows how a relationship between them grows and changes, beginning with friendship and turning into something more. Both Radek and Teyla, as well as the other characters that make small guest appearances, are perfectly in character, and I've considered this story to be a treat since the very first time I read it.

Why This Must Be Read:  Thel's stories are mostly Daniel-centric, but this one showcases Teal'c. Horoscopes is a series of twelve short fics, loosely connected by references to the Zodiac; this is one of the only serious ones, and while I quite enjoy the fluffier chapters, this one is definitely my favorite.

When the natives are affronted by Teal'c's presence and the lives of SG-1 and SG-9 are put at risk, Teal'c must force their leader to "answer as a man," as he so poignantly challenges, in order to stop the "purification" of his teammates. It is no small irony for the reader to see Teal'c trying to make others acknowledge, as he himself has done, that blindly following dictates is no excuse for one's actions.

While this is the Teal'c category, and I would have chosen this particular chapter to rec in any case, I would be remiss in not strongly recommending the rest of the chapters of this fic. Thel's humor is light, but tightly in character - and why miss Daniel translating Asgard dirty limericks, or Teal'c telling Sam about the little noisemaker in Jaffa boots that make that telltale "crunch crunch" noise when they march?

Why This Must Be Read: This wonderful story spans the events of Season Three from Janet's POV, mostly in terms of Daniel Jackson. Most of the events are episode based, but there are a few additional gems sprinkled throughout. No romance here, but definite friendship and mutual respect. Janet's voice comes through loud and clear, and it rings true, whether it's her enjoyment of Daniel playing "Great Balls of Fire" on the piano at the SGC, her pleasure at seeing Daniel's close relationship with Cassie, or her pain at watching Daniel's trust in her weakened because of the events of Legacy. This is Janet at her best, and well worth reading.

Why This Must Be Read: This story, set sometime in the first two seasons, is that most exquisite of treats: a real team fic, with everyone working together to come to a solution.

SG-1 is busy exploring an intriguing, dying world when Jack begins to suffer from amnesia, losing the memory of his earlier years. As the memory loss both deteriorates and accelerates, SG-1 tries to find the cause as well as the solution. The Jack O'Neill they know is quickly vanishing. What will convince this sudden stranger to help them get Jack back?

I love this story for its team dynamics, as each member of SG-1, including Jack himself, show unflagging moral courage in getting to a solution.
