One can keep a character alive and pretend their death never happened, or one can bring them back from the dead and continue their story. And that's exactly what this fic does, it gives you not one but five possible ways in which Kate wouldn't have had to die in Doppelganger: Asuran(ish) Intervention, Crystalline Memory, Ascension, The Nigh-Inevitable Highlander Crossover & Lucid Dreaming.

Why This Must Be Read:

This fic is structured around the explication of literary terms. The Atlantis crew illustrates for us in vignettes both long and short, amusing and touching, such concepts as caesura, the frame tale, and in medias res. Although this fic features a variety of parings, I think that the relationship between Teyla and Kate is most exquisitely portrayed, especially the way Kate's facade finally cracks and we get to see the human being beneath the shrink. There's also this amazing, amazing moment in the story when all of Atlantis works as one, where everyone is linked to everyone else and I've never seen anything like this moment. It's so beautiful and so perfect and it becomes the opportunity to say so many very insightful things about these characters that we love so much. I can really think of no finer place to begin my femslash recommendations to this community.

havocthecat continues what was begun there and also expands a great deal, giving the reader a detailed look at the world the characters now live in. Familiar faces abound, some of them in very intriguing circumstances. Havoc doesn't fail to give us an extremely well-written and well-planned story as the coming conflict takes an unexpected turn, bringing an old friend of Elizabeth's back into her life. And this threesome? Is just plain sexy.

this is the story that put the idea of Kate/Elizabeth into my head and did so through the extremely wonderful characterization of Elizabeth. Depending on your corner of fandom, Elizabeth doesn't get the treatment she deserves.

havocthecat, however, writes an Elizabeth that is insanely complex and varied. This is a REAL Elizabeth. One you can feel Torri inhabiting, which can't be said for some characterizations around fandom. I always love reading

havocthecat's fanfiction with Elizabeth, whether she's evil, mischievious, duty-driven, or all of the above with a side of choca-holic thrown into it for fun, she's always amazing. This story? ESPECIALLY SO.

A quiet conversation, chocolate appreciation, and sex, it's not a side of Elizabeth we get to see often and it's just a wonderful read.

Why This Must Be Read: Set between the scenes of Return I, this fic is all about the wrongness that Kate feels when she's on Earth, and how she doesn't exactly cope with it as well as she's like to. I like stories about the expedition's return to Earth, and what we didn't see in the episode. This is a beautiful story, and the poetry interspersed between the paragraphs helps with the haunting feel we get.

Why This Must Be Read: Pure, honest-to-goodness, beautiful smutty CRACK. Most genderswap fics I've read get terribly caught up in melodrama and angst, but this? Brilliant. I giggled most of the way through, but while being very amusing it still manages to be a lovely piece of threesome erotica that illustrates Sheppard's being initiated into the wonders of sex as a female, by a female - two, in fact. I think it fits this category fairly well, and I love it.

miera_c writes Elizabeth Weir like few others, who manages to get the strengths and weaknesses of the character, and doesn't mind exploiting them to create wonderful fics. You'd really be hard pressed to find an author that writes her better in any incarnation (the stoic leader, the lover, the friend, the strong-willed woman, the fragile woman).

miera_c does it all, and this story exemplifies many of them all wrapped up into one fic.

Why This Must Be Read: It's a Teyla POV fic, and it's not a typical shoot-em-up mission, which makes it unique, and not something you see often on the show. Teyla and the boys show up to the stereotypical women-only, Amazonian-style culture, and the boys-- Well, they're the boys. Do you even doubt that they'd goof something up? Getting them out of the fix they're in requires diplomacy, which...well, none of the rest of her team are skilled at. Through it all ,we see Teyla's mother as an influence in her life, and the developing closeness of the women of Atlantis, along with Kate and Teyla's relationship. I know it's another 'stepped into the cultures of Pegasus and screwed up' stories, but I like fics where Our Heroes don't know everything, and guns can't solve any problem. Also, it's a nice, long story, where the pace builds in a leisurely way and the resolution doesn't just come suddenly.

Why This Must Be Read: Because it shows a different relationship in a way that feels real. It's not fluffy bunnies love, it's hard and it's a dependancy and it fits with the two characters here - it's not overt ship, for the most part it's friendship but the events in the story evolve it to something more, just as they evolve the understanding of the characters. I like it not just for the insight into Heightmeyer, or for the other side of Beckett we get to see but because it shows a relationship that feels possible, likely even, however unpleasant the circumstances surrounding it are.

Why This Must Be Read: Despite the fact this isn't finished the first chapter, which is only Kavanaugh/Simpson, amazed me. Reading it I actually felt like he wasn't a bad guy, I felt sympathy for him and somehow the author writing Simpson's frustrating infatuation for him also felt believable; he isn't just some jerk and he's not a greasy slimy guy no one likes here - I love the way they make him alot more than that, and in a way I still haven't seen since. If you don't mind the rating (which is mainly for the later chapters that have yet to materialise - so far I'd say it's just Mature rated stuff) and you want to see a good version of Kavanaugh ship written then this is what I recommend. It's not yet full developed in plot or in how the ship might work but it was enough to make me wish people would write Kavanagh ship more often, because if done right it's one way to show he is still human and to be able to explore how he is.
